Oh, BG is very low on ship content, as expected.  As in, nonexistent.
How right you were!  So where does that leave us?  Anyone want to play D&D for the next three months?

Nah, Warcrack's new expansion software is out this week, and I STILL haven't hit level 70 with any of my existing characters.

Well I didn't think I'd re-visit this thread until ITWGY was released, but an argument at home reminded me that love can be displayed in strange ways.  Fry appears to me to be investing some emotional capital into his pleas for Leela to quit her violent ways.  I don't think that the typical person would try so hard to get someone to change unless that person really cared.  Of course, Fry is not typical, but I think this was a subtle display of his continued attachment to Leela, despite the story's lack of romantic love.

Fry giving Leela advice! What is going on!?

I do get the impression that Fry actually understands how bad her anger is, not just in magnitude, but how bad it is for her and everyone around her. Actually Bender seemed like he was trying to help at the start too.

Obviously it's the precursor to them being madly in love and making out in that classic comedy trop of "anger = white hot sexual passion". And then they were thrown in the volcano. It's Trekker#1/2 shipping at its finest.

RE: Xanfor's post- OMG I saw that comic last week and the first thing that came to mind was the F/L ship.

And then I reread the comic and the implications kind of scared me and I decided I never want to see the ship turn in that particular direction.

Ni: Sarge Morton posted this image ages ago; I thought it had been lost to time and wherever ancient files purged from image hosting sites go until I found it on bart182's site-

That is amazing! I always wanted Amy to appear more, as a friend for Fry / Leela (her meddling with the two would be hilarious) and in some sort of actual competent technical role, even saving the day!. That second part is just my irrational belief in the supreme powers of Eng...

I admit.... Fry / Amy grows on you after a while. Don't think I gave it much thought until I read "My Ship", right afterward you posted your Fry / Amy for "Parallel Lives" and now I'm not quite able to let it go...

Yes it is.  That image would have been nice just as a background still similar to the hot tub shot.  Those two seem to be made for each other, especially since Fry doesn't seem to be the jealous type.

I'm a little worried for "Into the Wild Green Yonder".

Watching the episodes one a day awaiting ITWGY is serving as a great reminder of how perfect Fry and Leela started out. It seems like them ending up together is natural from the start, the barriers of Leela's insecurity and Fry's immaturity are there, but the sense that both could work to help each other get over them is strong. The problem is the longer it goes on, the more chances get passed up, the less meaningful it all becomes.

Of course I want to see how Leela "really feels about Fry", but the more I consider it the more I think they are in an impossible position. I just don't see how it will be possible to write Leela's admission of feelings for Fry with anywhere near enough impact to make up for the 8 year span since she met him. I am concerned it will come across as more of a resignation than a revelation.

There is a very good chance it will come across as Leela "settling" for Fry, as opposed to a realization that he is what she wanted all along. Simply because if its the latter, why would it take so long for her to notice? With the number of times they have been close and the number of opportunities hes given her, what would make this one different?

To make matters worse, they have already used some pretty big events and shown no effect. Fry has already: sacrificed himself for her, been "killed", performed the opera, and came within an inch of marrying her with no possible chance of drugs / hypnosis! So any combination of the above events won't cut it... the impact of her reaction to another "death" of Fry will be dulled significantly by the fact that its happened... twice already?

If there had been a sense of growing affection from Leela over the course of the show / movies, it would be okay. Some kind of build up. But instead she gets a light switch, on -> warms up to Fry, off -> back to square one! Nothing in between. So barring some form of mind-blowingly epic, completely amazing and totally unpredictable event that will jam that light switch to "on" for good... I don't see how ITWGY can contain an ending for Fry / Leela capable of making up for those 8 years.

But who knows, maybe the writers were saving up for this all along, and ITWGY will blow my mind clean out my ears.

This is probably my biggest concern with the ship right now.  I don't see how a miraculous action from either character is suddenly going to change minds and relationships; its all already been done and clearly nothing changed back then, so why would it change now?  I think your light switch analogy is spot on, sadly, and that the switch has been abused to the point of absurdity.

And I don't want the writers to make Leela "settle" for Fry. Neither of them deserve to be stuck in that kind of relationship; I'd much rather see them paired off with other characters and genuinely happy than coupled with each other pretending to finally be content.

Although my concerns may not be warranted at all: I suspect the ending that we'll get for ITWGY will probably be as ambiguous as the one we saw for Devil's Hands because we still don't know if the series will continue on after this movie. -_-  I'm honestly not expecting a concrete resolution to the pairing... ever.

In unrelated news, I found a fan-colored version of that picture I posted earlier.

*cough*Colleen*cough*  Although to be fair I don't know many people who could handle that kind of relationship without jealousy interfering at some point.

I'm sure they will end up happy together, but its going to take some solid writing to abolish any chance that ^ is the case. Lets just say they have their work cut out for them.

I think the writers are bright enough to know leaving is the same way "The Devils Hands" did won't cut it this time. Hopefully they finally decided what the new dynamic should be, and are prepared to use it when the new series hits.

I've come to the realization that the writers/directors/producers are writing the DVDs for themselves and nobody else.  DXC can make all the comments about writers and staff not being allowed to read fan fics, I'm sure some have lurked and gotten an idea what the fanbase likes and wants to see.

Instead they're busy writing things to suit themselves and saying to themselves, "Take that, you lifeless geeks!  Try to write quality Futurama, won't you?"

To say that I've been massively disappointed with the DVDs is a major understatement.  To be treated like I'm some sort of cash cow that will buy the drek because it's all that's available is insulting.  The characters that we have grown to love because of their flaws have now become mere charactures of themselves.  Fry's dumb as a load of bricks, got it.  Leela's got a bad temper, check.  The Professor's an amoral crackpot - didn't see that one coming.  Bender's a possessive robot - thanks for clueing us in.  The crackerjack writing team has managed to take the characters we grew to love and turn them into totally unlikable people with few, if any, redeeming qualities.

I've watched each DVD ONCE.  None deserve the time to sit and suffer through a second time.

So if everything goes right, Leela professes undying love to Fry and the end is a shipper's dream, I'm afraid it will only evolk a collective yawn because the powers that be dragged it out too long and through too many obstacles in the way.  I know if I watch the last DVD and it has Fry and Leela getting together, I'll know that the giant RESET BUTTON (tm ST: Voyager) will be used if the series makes a comeback - no matter what the ending is, it will have weasel-room for everything to start over like BBS did to Devil's Hands - just ignore it and hope the hardcore fans will continue to drink the Kool-Aid that DXC and company are serving.

Bender's game is at least re-watchable. Possibly because it doesn't do much on any of the relationships

so I guess... *Shrug*

The reason Bender's Game is probably the most rewatchable is because it's the least labored or protracted, and the most 'natural' one so far; and the 1st hour at least is fairly entertaining. The others feel more forced and contrived. Ralph - if you've really only watched each once you should probably give them at least a second time - They do need at least 2 or 3 viewings, either for merits or for flaws. I largely agree about the characterizations, I've said so 700 times, though I do feel they got Bender more or less right in this latest one. One example of what irks me though: Since when is Leela so defined by her 'anger'?

It just seems like they didn't care much about alienating certain segments of fans..  or really didn't put much thought into that.

I liked Bender's Game the best of the sorry lot but it still doesn't mean it's worth my time rewatching it.  For every good part, there were more than enough lame, re-written jokes to make BG seem like a retread of other episodes.

So Leela's kinky enough that she enjoys her discipline collar?  Send her my way, she and I could have some naughty fun together. :flirt:  I guess the next movie will have her working a S&M Sex Club as both a Dom and Sub.

The Leela anger arc was the only thing enjoyable to me from BG.

If Futurama comes back again, I hope back to the 22 minute episodes and do one of two things - either kill the Fry/Leela ship completely or marry them.

The sad thing?  I was a shipper who wanted to see how Devil's Hands ended.  The fans deserved that much.  For all the BS that Groening and DXC spout about the fans being the only reason Futurama came back from the dead, they sure as hell haven't treated us fairly.  All they had to do was say that Fry and Leela went on a date it it didn't work out.  Instead, in their eyes, Devil's Hands never happened, so why should I get my hopes up for ITWGY?

I may watch BG again but I will never, ever, watch that waste of material and time known as BBS.

But everybody may want to know that the beautiful wife-person, Kelly, absolutely loved BBS, didn't care for BWABB and somewhat liked BG (the D&D segment didn't do anything for her - and she's a D&D geek - I lucked out with her, she loves sci-fi as much as I do).
