As for fan-fiction.... I'm an unreasonable person.  I watched the episodes when they came on and they became canon..

Dude, none of us have a problem with that.  The problem comes in when some of the senior members that reside in Off-Topic make snide remarks about the people in On-Topic.

I have a problem with the older members who act superior when a new member makes a comment like, "Nibbler's shadow is seen in the first episode!"  That may be old info to the older members, but if you're a new fan to Futurama, it's a real kicker to spot things like that.  To be talked down to like you're some sort of retard or Democrat (I know, I'm being redundant) doesn't really encourage further contributions.

Winna, I've never had a problem with you and doubt that I will, but I hope you see where I coming from when I make comments about how some members in OffTopic seem to act like elitist towards the contribitors in OnTopic.

@WAVer I always liked that first picture. Not sure why it's just really good.

As for Xanfor very nice explosion there. That explains the giant flash on the horizon earlier. Reminds me of when jle1993 used to be here.

Yeah, I picked up on all those references, too, thanks to my wonderful sophomore English teacher I had!  Your fiction is wonderful, Coldy.  I am still coming down from "Blame it on the Brain" and even more from the River with many currents"  (sorry for the misspelling but this fan fic really moved me- one of the few I have cried reading.)  You really have some potential there, sir.    Have you read "Elantris" by Brandon Sanderson?  You may have different beliefs but your lovely intellectual yet sarcastic humor writing style matches his, and I think you two have a lot in common in your writing.  It would be nice if you two met someday.

It's not just you.  And it's a perception that started off some time ago and will continue to go on; it's something present in any and every community.  I don't care about them though, I care about here; I said what I said to give some sort of insight into why these perceptions are held.  I see both sides, and yours is reasonable.  I'm also that elitist that you talk about; I categorize people in my community... but unlike others who are negative about it all, I am slightly different.  I don't see new people, I see possible regulars.  People who will come back and stay.  Not all of them are that and it gets weeded out fast.... Most of the ones that want to talk about Futurama disappear after all their questions are asked... but some of us stay and continue.

The On-Topic and the Off-Topic are intertwined.... We need both... the former to introduce people, and that's why you're stance is honorable.  Degrading them will not help anyone... but the other is needed as well.  They all congregate that after awhile, when they're done with the other... because after the Futurama is part they realize that they like the people.  Bonds and friendships are forged, and they last a lot longer.  None of these halls are new to me... but I am an apparition and it's not easy to see my presence.  Every once in a long while I get the urge to give sight to the machinery.  Show the warm side beside the cold iron gears.

Anyways... yeah about BBS; I was well aware before I saw the movie that it wouldn't be perfect.  And the Fry/Leela thing wasn't my only problem with the film... I wasn't a huge fan of the scammer storyline, although I understand the humor with which it was done.

I also knew some time ago that BwaBB would be better.  No.  It will be justice to the show.  I just happen to know these things......

I can't take credit for anything but I knew that Coldy would be a great asset to our little disfunctional family after viewing a few posts from him.  I hope that some of the positive encouragement I gave him the first few months he appeared on this messageboard convinced him that some of us geeks really enjoyed his sarcastic, scathing yet intelligent wit.

And now Ms. Mustang makes an appearance.  I feel that she will also be a great asset to us.  Her world travels and insights to other cultures and geographic regions will add fuel to the intellectual membership.

Just as I can be a "Little Too Southern For My Own Good" at times, Xanfor can be a little too intellectual for his own good at times, but we still love him.

Arch has made his comeback a very memorable one.  Several different pieces of art in different states of preparedness and a couple of stories to boot.  Granted, the Fry-turned-into-a-woman really pit him in a league all his own, it was a damned good story in a lot of ways.  Written well technically (which is the best type of 'well' there is) and very original.  He went where no man has gone before (that sounds very familiar) - past making Fry a transvestite and into a full-blown transexual.  That takes balls (no pun intended).

I'm probably the only person on this board who posts reguarly on both OnTopic and OffTopic.  I'm just crazy enough to fit in almost anywhere I go.

Anyway, as Winna says, the OnTopic and OffTopic sections need each other if the board is to survive.  After a while, it gets boring to talk about Nibler's shadow in SP3000, so people migrate to OffTopic.  I would love to meet some of the geeks members of the PEEL universe one day:  Winna, just to show him how an old Southern Boy really drinks, VF, to thank just for being VF, Kryten, to accuse and torment endlessly by accusing him of being a 'Furry', Coldy, just to shake his hand and talk him out of that Communist nonsense he has running through his head, Arch, just to meet the guy who came up with the idea of turning Fry into a woman and Ribbons, just to stomp a mudhole in his ass and walk the damned thing dry.

@Ralph Snart- your words about my world travels and insights are very touching and an honor I hope I uphold. I bet if you did a questionnaire, you would find a lot of Futurama fans who travel more than I can, especially those from Australia, New Zealand, Germany, the Netherlands, Denmark, Sweden, Iceland, Scotland, Norway, Finland.   I try to travel a lot for a person from the USA (we get all that vacation time you know), but I also try to supplement it with book learning and on-line learning. I know I would love one day to travel the Silk Road, but that is on hold for me the way the world is today.

@FryandLemon- I loved the drawing you gave from Maddama.  I try to show Fry as being a bit heavier in my work, too, so nice to see someone else is doing that, too, so thanks for sharing her works.

WORD.

There was a thread waaay back (back when Shiny was still here) that asked what people preferred - the buff Fry or the "soft" Fry.  I think most liked the "soft" Fry better - saying his flaws were endearing if I remember correctly.  Let's hope Leela starts thinking that soon - she seemed very impressed with Buff!Fry in the parasites episode..

Fry fried on caffeine is fantastic, but in terms of the show, oh, definitely the "soft" Fry... of course he's endearing.. though in real life I tend to like slim guys, even skinny, but I don't really go for the macho type, bulked up with muscles, or ones who look like they're on steroids.. ugh. So, yeah, pudgy Fry trumps the "buff" one any day. In my opinion.

I was just watching Parasites Lost today, and when he ripped off his shirt I had the verbal reaction of "you just don't look right, Fry." He didn't seem to take offence so I didn't get beaten up.  :) Consarnit Leela, "what you've become" seemed like such a horrible thing to say.

Nice quote... that is about how I feel these days.  I love the outdoors and have found that the real outdoor athletes are the ones who are on the pudgy side.  They are always up for a hike and a mountain climb and even some camping and fishing- they are open minded and turn out to be quite more fit than anyone can imagine.  It is always the guys who have the "buff" bodies who most hate the great outdoors somehow.  They have an image to maintain and so they are the least likely ones to ask to join me on a trip in nature.  I will go for the open minded guy who likes the outdoors and is up for new experiences and keeps himself in good shape- amazingly that type looks more like Fry than like a fashion model- believe it or not.  Go figure.

So when they put me on a stamp, do you want:

A)  The young, muscular Ralph?

B)  The fat, pudgy-yet cuddly Ralph?

even though I'm carrying an extra 40 pounds that I don't need and am wracked with constant back pain, the people I work with are amazed at the speed I can move and the strength that I can display.  Add to that the fact that I'm closing in on 50 years of age faster each day - the 20 and 30-somethings I work with are amazed that not only am I still eating solids and still have total control of bowel and bladder, I can work 8 or 12 hour shifts next to the youngest and best conditioned person.

Alas, Ms. Mustang, I have an inate hatred of "The Great Outdoors".  I freely admit my idea of "Roughing it" is staying at a motel without room service.  I got enough of that when I was in the Boy Scouts.  My philosophy is:  I'm on top of the food chain, I'm going to enjoy it.

The same can be said of women, the waif-thin, desirable (but not by me) fragile female seems the thing pushed down our throats.  Girls and women damage their health and even die trying to acheive or maintain this physical state.  Needless to say, these women don't have much stamina.

My first wife was full-blooded German.  She was built like Marilyn Monroe - very curvy but a little heavier than "the desired female body".  She and I would play 18 holes of golf a week and go bowling once a week.  She was very physical and had almost no limit to her endurance.

My current wife, before she was devastated by Multiple Sclerosis would race minature Grand Prix cars and play golf with me at least a couple of times a month.  When I would enter one of my cars into a car show, she would help me detail that car for hours.  She was a little thinner and shorter than my first wife but she also didn't have this "desired female body" - she was too curvy.

So the opposite is true with women - the ones who obsess over their bodies generally don't have room in their life for anything else.  Looks fade after a while, but a young, fun-seeking heart lasts forever.

One thing I always found funny in the series:  Leela is the Goddess Of Good Health and Physical Fitness.  In that case, it must be embarrassing that Fry can run as fast as her and be able to keep up with her.

"Fat sack of crap, indeed!"
