It's a fairly archaic phrase; I think Wiki is correct about it coming from the vaudeville era.  You may not have heard of Peoria but certainly you have heard of Caterpillar Inc. which is headquartered there.

Back on topic, how about Turanga Astrid Leela?  Too predictable?
Turanga Aeolia Leela - too Sapphic?
Anastasia - Greek for resurrection (she represents the Turanga family's rise from the sewers back to the surface)
Apollonia - feminine form of a powerful god
Amber - just because I like it; also an attractive gem that is made more interesting if it has an ugly littly flaw trapped inside.

Read my last post on the last page- have I made my point about weird names? I'm willing to argue more...

Well Turanga Leela isn't exactly a name that suits itself to "blending in with surface culture." They kept their family name, and the mutants themselves have much more normal given names than she does. I think if Leela has a middle name at all it'd be something Sanskrit-based to go with the rest of her name.

If she's posing as an alien, then it would be appropriate to have a name in that fashion so people will acknowledge that fact. Her first name is a common surface name because, like today, it is accustomed for immigrants or visitors of a country to change their name.

I'll have more tomorrow [probably].

Leela was named before her parents decided to send her up to the surface. End of argument.

How? In the flashback in "Leela's Homeworld", nobody referred to Leela by her name.

Leela had a nametag on her that said:  Turanga Leela.  Her parents put that nametag on her.

That was when they were dropping her off at the orphanarium. But when she was just born, they never mentioned what she was named. And in that scene, that's when her parents get the idea to let her live her life on the surface.

I also think they decided to give her up very soon after she was born because of how normal she was. (relatively)
