Sci-fi sitcom. Lazy slob loser is placed in stasis for many centuries to wake in the distant future. Robot for a friend, etc.

Yes, thematically and stylistically very similar.

Haven't seen it, but I've heard it's like Futurama. From the post above me, for instance.

Some similarities between Futurama and red dwarf;

FRY ==== DAVE LISTER

BENDER ===== KRYTEN

LEELA ===== KOCHANSSKI

The Leela Kochanski connection is more to do with the unfulfilled longing of the main character Lister ( or FRY ) for the female character Kochanski or Leela in the case of Futurama.

Those who havent seen red dwarf should!

Fry is closest to Lister, as a slob. However, for the most part, Lister knew his way around and was generally the smart one. Later in Futurama, Fry smartened up a bit about his new time period as well, however, he did also cease being as much of a slob as he used to.

Leela is closest to Rimmer, as far as strictness and adherence to documented procedure (eg, TSHL.) However, we all know how often that hasn't applied...

Amy is closest to Kochanski. As in, spoiled rich girl. The relationship between Kochanski and Lister is not duplicated at all.

Farnsworth is closest to Holly. Yes, very much like Holly, indeed. What's happenin', Dudes?

Bender, from a character point of view, is the exact and complete inverse of Kryten. I'm not even gonna bother explicating this. However, from a character placement point of view, Bender is most likely to take the place of Cat, as aggravator, that is, the person who continually pushes the opposite personalities at each other to create 'sparks'. Not that he's done this very often, but he would be the one to do it.

Yeah, Bender -> Cat. I can see that. The overbearing egomania too.

Bender is indeed a mirror image of Kryten, and vice versa.
Yeh I can see how Bender is like the cat.
Leela is too human to be a rimmer, though I can see how  she maybe aspires to be like this, her soft warm hearted humanistic traits get in the wat though. Leela might kick ass, but she is a big soft shit at heart.
I can see the analogy between the Kochanski character and amy, but I maintain that the dynamics of Fry and Leela parallel the Lister kochanski situation perhaps for different reasons. the thing is though probably a Fry Leela love affair is more plausible character wise. Mind you given that Lister and Kochanski were supposed to be the last humans around there would probably be some biological imperative for them to get it together even if they hated each others guts!

Lister and Kochanski were a couple in the beginning of the series, weren't they? When she was returned to life she was rather cross with Dave and didn't want anything to do with him... I can't remember why that was, but it could be viewed as being similar to the Fry/Leela relationship after Parasites Lost.

There is a big discontinuity from the earlier series of red dwarf and red dwarf 7 wherein the Kochanski character is reintroduced.
In the original setting Lister Never got to go out with Kochanski, it always remained an unfulfilled fantasy, he tried desperatly in the early episodes to persuade Rimmer to swap the hologram disks so that he (lister) could have a date with the hologramatic Kochanski ( the real one having died with the rest of the red dwarf crew whilst lister was in stasis. )
However in series 7 the idea is put across that Lister had a brief relationship with Kochanski in which they had sex alot and ate take away food, but she got bored 'cause she wanted something more sophisticated.
The Kochanski he meets in series 7 is an alternative Kochanski from a different dimension ( a bit like the universe A and B in futurama ) That Kochanski had a long term relationship with the alternative dave lister in the other dimension in which HE was a hologramatic version of lister who had in fact been killed with the rest of the crew of red dwarf at the beginning, as per the version of events in that alternative universe.
Perhaps the dynamics that exist between Dave lister ( the original one ) and the Kochanski form the other dimension are in some ways similair to fry and leela after parasites lost.

On another point Hermes is probably the most like Rimmer, but probably not as funny.
