Fry as a scrawny weakling works best.  It's kinda hard to root for him if he's a buff dude.

Hmmmm.  Someone agreeing with me about Fry being skinny.  Fry should weigh under 100 pounds.   But he weighs more than Kiff and Farnsworth.   Besides, as much as I like him,  Fry just never struck as the hero type.  More like a 'bumbling-sidekick' type.

You're kidding, right? Fry is way too tall to weigh under 100 pounds. That would be absolutely ridiculous and completely unhealthy.

Buff Fry is weird, awkward, and despite having no real effect on his personality, it just makes him more unsympathetic. Even though he's special already with the delta brainwave and whatever, portraying him as a lazy slob really does bring him down to the average person's level more. It really adds to his charm and relatability.

It makes him more like the typical delivery boy I'm used to. Except UPS drivers, like the one portrayed by Phil on Mad TV.

Buff Fry IS weird.

I thought Fry was just supposed to be just the average 25 year-old delivery boy. Somehow a buff delivery boy doesn't work.... (Also I like Fry much better when he's normal and NOT buff).

I think the best look for Fry is an average "unhealthy" guy.  Not necessarily skinny, but no muscle tone and a little bit of a gut.  5ft10in and about 190lbs.  You have to remember he is extremly lazy.  Wait, are we talking about Fry or me?

Well if he was buff futurama would be a lot different and Leela would have done him by now. So ya skinny works best for Fry.

Fry being out of shape (not fat, not skinny, just out of shape) works far better. Also a lazy delivery boy who's IQ isn't quite up in numbers ends up saving the world just sounds more interesting then the usual buff guy fighting to the death with a villian. Fry can't do that so everything's more complicated and interesting.

If fry was buff he would be an arrogant asshole with a pea brain (instead of just pea brain), so you know where I stand.

Scrawny makes him what he is. He's a slacker. If he were buff, his level of intelligence would put him on par with a 'roid head. Not cool.

Okay, Fry can weigh just 110 or 120 pounds.   That's skinny for his height.  Just think he'd be better off and his character would work better if he were scrawny.  And Bender could rip on him about it.

I like fry as the more lazier fry who isn't jacked. Mainly because they are showing him as the typical average guy who drinks beer and eats pizza. I think a all of us can kind of relate to him in some way, and that why he is the best character in the show

Yes, that is one of the many reasons why he's the best character in the show. What a random question by the way, of course he's better as a lazy ass.

Personally, I pictured Fry around 180cm tall and weighing 85-90 kgs. Average male with certain overweight, but not really fat.
In some later episodes, they often made him a bit broader, like someone who occasionally works out. Regarding continuity, that seemed quite all right: Concerning all the crates/packages/etc.. he had to carry during his deliveries, that should have some training effect.

Personally, I did like the careful design details in "Law and Oracle" best:
In the beginning, they gave Fry a uniform that really downplayed the shoulder, torso and arms (it was one of the few, maybe the only episode in which they did draw Fry's arms thinner than Leela's, btw). Later on, as a cop, he was much more massive round the shoulders and arms (even when taking the wide cut uniform into consideration).
Showing that some physical excersive had been done, and to show he did not become a cop in a week. Yep, as a hobby cartoonist, I really appreciate when a show goes so carefully into details...(in case anyone has not noticed: I like details ;) )

Good points Inquisitor Hein. :)
My favourite body type is athletic, y'know, slim but slightly toned? Which I think Fry would be after all his adventures, but maybe with a little bit of tubbiness on his stomach. But the animators have seemed to keep him muscleless and a bit overweight...
Topic: Because the athletic type is between buff Fry and lazy Fry I'd go for either, so long as he had lazy Fry's brain.
(I also love him as Captain Yesterday but I'm no fan of suits or uniforms, those are turn offs for me.)

Have you all forgotten how Fry is a fat sack of crap? :nono:

He's definitely got a muffin top at the least, as many cartoon people in their 20s get when they first start to veg out after having dropped out of a college named for a kiddy carnival park...

I thought the college was a ride in the kiddy park carnival?

Almost all of Groening's characters have muffin tops, as well as an overbite and no fingernails. I think the more important things to point out are the various parts of his personality as well as his experiences that show he is a fat sack of crap (and not exactly desirable).

Yeah...that was the joke...and there it goes! :p

The only time I can recall even seeing Fry buff, aside from the slew of FemJesse drawings, was in Parasites Lost. Even when he was a slave building Bender's monument you could see his pot belly.

Well.."Fat" in a Groening universe is imhO rather "Comic Book Guy" scale. Though certainly not  being underweight, Fry still has a long way to go until reaching that weight ;)
ImhO, Fry has rather that kind of look that -with a proper jacket and a not too tight shirt- can still be sold politely as "strong" or "broad", though everyone knows (s)he is not really facing a bodybuilder here ;)

Yeah he's not really "fat" just needs to suck it in more. Actually his body type is similar to my bf's now that I think of it. Slender but needs to get rid of that gut  :laff:

He lurks PEEL sometimes, but luckily not much of Ontopic :evillaugh: It'll be our little secret.

I love Fry the way he is , and perhaps the picture Leela is painting could be just how she sees him, not what she wants him to be... or maybe I'm wrong...

Its her own idealised fantasy projected onto Fry.  Leela does seem to have some fondness for his tummy though, if Rebirth is anything to go by.

The following thought came to my mind while reading this thread:

If Fry really started working out, most certainly THIS would happen:

I think it was.. awesome.. when he was buff. Honestly, I like him lazy though. Makes him funnier.. I have to agree with fryandlemon on the tux thing though.. mmm :)
But what does Leela prefer...

And now that I think of it, I too prefer Fry in a tux       :p

Fry is absolutely perfect the way he is. Not obese, just with a few extra pounds of flab. I'd think he gets enough of a workout on deliveries to maintain his weight at least, so with that being said he could be considered semi-fit. I think if he had always been drawn as the buff guy who stands tall at all times he would've sucked as a character. Being slightly slouchy and "fluffy" makes him more lovable. I think it has a little to do with cartoon logic/psychology 101 too. All rounder characters are generally perceived as good guys. Characters meant to be liked. Roundness adds to the cute factor too (think: Mickey Mouse who is literally a pile of circles and ovals coupled with a few cylinders for arms, fingers, legs). The list goes on. I'm not saying that those things come into play with Groening's character designs indefinitely, but it does fit... hairstyles aside that is.

With all due respect, PZ.

A hair style does not become that way without 'freakously' long hair.

Reincarnation Fry in the dance scene was pretty toned. Plus the super dance squad outfits were nice.

I think the most attractive Fry is either Fry in uniform or dinner jacket Fry. I also liked scruffy, bearded Fry in Bender's Big Score but I'm biased. My husband's a redhead and I convinced him to turn his goatee into a full beard when we started dating.

It's been said in other threads that Fry seems to be ever so slightly buffing up this season anyway, so the ladies might get the best of both worlds.
