Really? Hmm... Well, if you need practice writing in-character fanfics, especially involving relationships, there is no show better to work with. Like 'Futurama', the essence of 'Friends' is in the characters. It's not just wild and abstract comedy at every opportunity. Every character has depth and a history. Think of it as a mixture of a really, really good comedy and (if you'll pardon the apparent oxymoron) a good soap opera.

It's not the best show ever (Futurama' wins that contest), but one of the episodes was rated by TV Guide and TV Land to contain 'The 58th most unexpected moment on television'. And don't look up that '58th moment' to see what is. You have to actually see it order to get the spoof I'm gonna be making in my Anthology. Yeah, I know what you're thinking.

Come on, Bender, give us the control back...

Aww... Here's Leela looking at something... That brings a tear to my eye... And you know what else does?

Yeah, I thought so.

This has been Xanfor saying 'I edit all my posts'.

I was watching 'Insane in the Mainframe' the other day. I never realised how incredibly shippy it was, and it's Leela insinuating it!

She is the most concerned

*Beepbeepbeepbeep*

She can't keep her hands off him

And of course our favourite bits...

And thus my daily shippy quota was fulfilled

Xanfor... You have completely and utterley confused me. :hmpf: I don't have access to any 'Friends' dvds so I'll have to look at it online. It'll be interesting to see the list of unexpected moments as well. Looking forward to your fic. Don't take too long to post it :p

Xanfor: I caught the middles and ends of some episodes here and there, and I could see it was a well-done, funny, and layered show, but the only character who really "caught" me was Phoebe...none of the other five seemed very quirky or nerdy, and the show didn't have a science fiction or adventure premise, and, well...what more can I say? I know what I likes and I likes what I know. :p

~~~
Tastes Like Fry: Insane in the Mainframe is one of my top favorite episodes, for all of those reasons you just showed grabs of.   :love:
(Also because Fry gets trapped in a closet with a knife-wielding psychotic robot, but we won't go into that...   :evillaugh: )
Odd... I like Chandler. Although Phoebe is by far the one with the most history... (No pun intended)
(And yes, I was purposely being confusing yesterday. You should try it sometime. (Smiley faces and apologies)
Now, go nominate Shiny. 'Nuff said and done.
--------------------
No...it sounds refreshingly non-sexist!  I LOVE it when a male character has no problem with having their bacon continuously saved by a woman who is admittedly and demonstrably more qualified to do the saving.  The fact that Fry unabashedly hides behind Leela (liked in MarsU, teaser) I find hilarious and adorable.
This doesn't stop him from throwing himself in front of Leela to protect her in cases where her superior fighting skills give her no advantage (Xmas Story, Sting, TDHAIP), so it's not at all about Fry's courage or affection being deficient.  Fry just has zero (zip, zilch, nada) interest in being macho, and no one can shame him into it because he has no shame.       :D
Yes!  As one of my housemates likes to say, - As long as Zapp Brannigan exists, Fry will never be at the bottom of the list.      ;)
'Sniff. I don't know how she does it. She can bundle my entire worldview into an amazingly discriptive pile of random words. Somebody hold me...
Love this pic. I kind of like the *beep-beep-beep* one, but mostly for laughs. The fact that Leela doesn't realize wat she's doing cracks me up every time. But her stroking his hair here... That's so subliminal. Even Leela probably doesn't even notice how she was doing it. Just more evidence to support my theory that one day, Bender's gonna get fed up and decide to take matters into his own hands.
Now here's an idea for a fic: What if the crew had to travel back to Universe #1 for some reason, and Fry1 and Leela1 decide that FryA and LeelaA are really pathetic, and they collaborate with Bender in order to take matters into their own hands?
Hmm... So many thoughts that need to be thought...
P.S. Insane in the Mainframe is my absolute favorite episode!!! It has all the elements of why I love this show: every time I watch it, I end up laughing so hard I can't breathe, and it's full of shippy goodness!
I'll leave you with my favorite quote from that episode:
Funny... I used to think of insane in the mainframe as my favorite non shippy episode...  Guess i missed all the shippyness that happened the first time I watched!
How'd that happen... Strange...
Well I had a three year break from futurama from when the show ended to when i realized how much i missed it and bought the DVD's, only natural that I forget the smaller details.
There's my excuse   :p
Shippy pic!  Don't you just love it when Fry get's all cute and jealous?
One thing that bothered me though during the cyber house rules was the fact that he was jealous in one scene and then showed no signs of being jealous in the ones that followed.
Like in this scene:
Not the best framegrab, but my point is, in that scene Adlai(or however you spell it) has his arm around Leela and Fry looks as if he doesn't care at all, no big deal!  She was thinking of having children with Adlai and Fry does nothing...   :(
(I guess he couldn't anyway, but he could look at least a little upset in that scene)
He did want her to appreciate having one eye though and got his thanks   :)
Fry nor Leela are people of much words, but affection by touch.
There's like five languages of 'love'
Physical Touch
Quality Time
Acts of Kindness
Words of Affirmation
Gifts
(I think those are the right titles)
I think both Fry and Leela are PT and maybe QT
Yeah, that's kinda how I feel too. However, BumbleBeeTheta was apparently a fan. She wrote her fanfic 'My So-Called Best Friend's Wedding' based on several episodes. I like those particular episodes as well, but not for the reason she spoofed. But she was the one who inspired me to write the spoof I am now. So all hail her! (I do hope she returns someday...)
Oh, and I was the one who said that, SpaceCase. Sorry for interrupting, but as any real shipper knows (where Intelligent = True), more is required from a story than pure shippyness (That is, a story where ¬Shippy = Ø). That's one of the reasons 'Insane in the Mainframe' is so popular around here (Episode ⇔ [{¬Shippy = Ø} ∨ {Shippy = Ø} = ¬True] → Popular Among Shippers = True).
Eh, but that's Nibbler's job. He's just waiting for the right time. But Bender... Bender knows nothing about anyone's job, even his own. If he gets fed up and starts trying to meddle with other people's emotional affairs...
   :D
And now, as I said before, it's time to nominate Shiny. But don't all of you jump up at once, because I'm not done yet. I have one more rebuttal...
Nuh-uh!!!
So, anywho:
Leela and Fry are a perfect match! BUT:Sometimes I get so mad at Leela, but I remember that she grew up emotionally deprived, and all is forgiven (sort of)
Something I've noticed in a lot of fanfic I've read, is that many people think that she would start out using Fry as a booty-call, then get freaked out that he really loves her... which would set them back to the beginning. This almost seems like something Leela would do, in earlier eps, but as time moves on, I don't think that she would do that to Fry. She knows he loves her now, she's just not sure about how she feels.
That being said, if they ever slept together before the series finally, I could see her retreating thinking that she messed up their relationship, and Fry blaming himself, all that emotional gush.
But, if there is one thing us romantical types love to hate, it's that emotional, gut-wrenching, you're an idiot, go get her you moron gush.
That being said, I need a emotional gush fix, I'm gonna go watch "Parasites Lost"
Feel free to agree/disagree with me....just no more talk of my missing eye-brows  :)
Oh my, no!
That’s part of what makes the ‘ship so compelling. They are both flawed characters.
Fry is an essentially decent fellow, who loves Leela with a ferocious clarity, and I beleive she knows this, but his immaturity, lack of ambition, crudity, etc, put her off better than a gigawatt repulsor.
For her part, Leela has her issues too: She has abandonment, and rejection issues, the concordant rigid personal code, and I’m not even going to mention her dating history...
The conflict is the ‘thing’.
Probably because it is a convenient plot-device.
Perhaps a little too convenient...
Mmm... I think she’s come to value Fry’s friendship so much she doesn’t want to risk mucking that up.
She knows he loves her now, she's just not sure about how she feels.
And that is the heart of the issue right there.
Again that might be a little too convenient...
That’s part of what makes the ‘ship so compelling. They are both flawed characters.
But they're still a perfect match for each other in their very conflicting flawedness...each of their flaws is offset by the other's strengths, and each of their TOO-strong strengths is mitigated by the other's flaws...the conflict is just excess energy from their dynamic interaction.
Add Bender (Who in my vision is to the 'Ship like a lazy, loveable ne'er-do-well live-in cousin who occasionally provides a stumbling-block but who ultimately supports the relationship) and you have a well-rounded mixture of individual flaws that BECOMES a collective strength.
Or something like that.  (Shiny admits that maybe her brain is not quite awake yet.... )
Edit: or just read a couple posts back...:
I dunno about the whole Bender getting them together theory.
I don't think Bender really gives a damn if they're together or not. He doesn't care about their feelings. The only thing important to Bender is himself and that's what makes him a good character. Like, he cares about Fry a bit but only for his own benifit. Fry is his best friend and he wants Fry there because it's HIS best friend, not because he actually cares about Fry. It all comes back to Bender really only caring for himself.
Nonsense!  Of what POSSIBLE use to Bender was Fry's making a "metaphorical" deal with the Robot Devil to win Leela's heart?  And yet who not only suggested it in the first place, but threatened to lose all respect for Fry and punch him if he turned down the offer? Eh?  EH?
I do believe that Bender does care about their relationship, or at least finds it mildly amusing. What's his favorite show (beyond Elzar)? It's a soap opera! What are soap operas made up of? Tangled love stories!
Along the more selfish line of things, (which is where Bender seems to dwell most often)
If Fry is going on and on about how wondeful Leela is, and he keeps getting his heart broken, he probably cries or something along those lines (maybe tries to talk to Bender) which gets on Bender's nerves. If it irritated him, he's more likely to make it happen just to get it to stop. (or at least that's what he would say)
Come on people, am I the only one out there that thinks that secretly,Bender is a hopeless romantic?  :D
And witht the 7:00 episodes, I'm not really sure, I think they've played all season 1 and are in season two but I dunno if it's in order. I think it's loosely in an order.
I wasn't really paying attention closely enough.
