(FADE IN on SHINY alone on a bare stage, spotlit.  She smiles and waves to all.)

SHINY: Hi, fellow shippers, and a big hi to Menalaus!  Welcome to PEEL.   :) What you see as a flaw, the rest of us who  frequent this particular thread see differently.  I have a metaphor that illustrates it perfectly, so here to explain that metaphor is a Colorful, Possibly Vaguely Midwestern Yokel.  Please welcome our Yokel, everyone.

(Enter CPVMY, stage right.  Shiny steps back and gives him the spotlight.)

CPVMY: Thanks there, Shiny person.  Well, first off, hallo and welcome to this PEEL place, Mr. Menna-loss there.  So, let me get to it.  I b'lieve this shippin' or not-shippin' situation is a lot like a cupcake.

Yeppers, a cupcake.  Y’see, with yer animated sitcom, y'got your comedy, which is yer cake.  Y’got yer extras - yer social satire and yer nerdy science jokes, which taken together makes yer icing - sometimes it's better than the cake, and some say it's the best part of all, but too much of it, and it starts to cloy a bit.  If y’start to get more icing than cake, it can be pretty disappointing.  You need a good, solid base o'well-made cake to put your icing on, or it's just too much of a good thing, you know what I’m sayin’?

Now, anyone'll tell you that a good cupcake with icing is a darn fine treat, yessiree bob.  You folks who like yer cupcakes fixed this way are onto a good thing, and I won't say a word against ya, not ever.

But all of us viewers, upon tunin' in to this Futurama thing here, discovered that some o'their cupcakes have somethin' extra....a big dollop of smooth, sweet pudding right in the center of the cake. That, to my way of thinkin', is the shippiness part of this show.    It don't show up on the outside, it just kinda waits there in the center to surprise you when you bite into it, but it changes the whole cupcake experience.

Now, if you don't think much of that burst of unexpected pudding in the middle of yer cupcake, well, I can see yer point.  Myself, I don't like chocolate chips in brownies, and that's a fact, though they're my wife's favorite.

But some of us - not most, I'll grant ya, but a fairly decent hunk all the same - have discovered that the pudding really adds somethin' to to a cupcake...somethin' that the cake itself and the icing don't quite satisfy. No, not even if it's Aunt Nell's buttercream icing, good as that may be.  The pudding has a richness of its own, a certain texture, that some of us really like when mixed with all that cake and icing.  That’s just the way we are.  Now, the way we talk about the pudding all the time, you might think that all we cared about was pudding, and wonder why we don’t just go eat at a pudding factory.  But speakin’ for myself and my wife and this Shiny person (I’d say “this Shiny fella” except she’s not a fella), we love the pudding, but we find it’s even better than normally good when you find it in the middle of a cupcake. We love the cake and icing to bits, I assure ya, but the pudding kinda stands out in its rarity, so we talk about it more.

I feel real lucky that there’s a show like Futurama, with pudding every now and then, since American cupcakes don’t have pudding very often.  And I figure that there’s enough pudding-free episodes in each season’s batch for you to enjoy, and I hope you won’t begrudge us the occasional episode with that rich, smooth, sweet, shippy center that just really makes our day.  All right, I’m done.  Thanks, now.

SHINY: Thank you, Colorful, Possibly Vaguely Midwestern Yokel.  You were starting to sound a bit “Southeast Texas” here and there, I think.

CPVMY: Well, I did spend some summers with my uncle’s family in Tomball.

SHINY: That conveniently explains it.  Well, that’s all for now, fellow thread members.  Tune in next time when I’ll have My Friend Andy Imitating His Vietnamese-Born Parents When Telemarketers Call here to explain the flaws in the current physics theory of dark matter.

MFAIHVBPWTC (faintly, in background): Dark matter no good!  Is like ether theory last century, no make sense any more!  Paradigm shift better, you see!

SHINY: Save it for your cameo, Andy.  Goodnight, my dear Futurama fans!

(SHINY waves as we FADE TO BLACK).

(rapid tapdancing is heard, and the lights begin to come up again. SHINY tipity-taps her way back to center stage and does a quick TOTP softshoe.  Then she bows, tips an imaginary hat, and tap-dances away again as we once more FADE TO BLACK).

(FADE IN on XANFOR alone on a bare stage, spotlit)

XANFOR: Wha-?... Oh, yes right... Of course I have a speaker, I just... She's just... On her honeymoon right now, yes. Don't blame me, yes, don't! You see, for I have... This Very Annoying Person I Found in the Gutter on the Street of New York!

TVAPIFGSNY: Uh... Hi!

XANFOR: Actually, he's real shy. So long!

(Xanfor runs away)

(TVAPIFGSNY pulls a small paper out of his coat)

TVAPIFGSNY: Ok, then, everyone... Before I pull a Professor Zoidy and disappear from the face of the Earth, I have to present this,

this,

Quote
Oh Fry, you must be alive! I've never been treated this romantically by my own imagination before!

and this.

Quote
Excerpt from Xany-Boy's new fic, which will only get posted if somebody bumps his thread  :p :

Leela wandered onto the bridge. Fry turned around to face her quickly.

   “Oh... Hi, Leela.”

“Hey.” replied Leela, sounding depressed. “What are you doing up here?”

“Just looking out at the stars, and stuff. Listen... There's something I need to tell you.”

   Leela glanced at him. “Really?”

“Yes... Could you come sit down, please?”

Leela nodded and walked over to the couch. It surprised her how every movement she made seemed to have absolutely no significance. She sat down slowly.

“Leela,” Fry breathed softly, as though he couldn't say it, “I... Haven't said this before... And I know it may be a suprise... But since we may not survive this, I just had to tell you.”

Leela noted the sound of his voice and leaned toward him, concerned. “What... What is it, Fry?”

   “I...”

   “Yes?”

   “I... I love you!”

Leela stared at him for several seconds before she was able to comprehend the meaning of those words. When she finally did, she was speechless.

She didn't know what to say, or even what to think.

TVAPIFGSNY: Yo! Xanpoop! My part's over!

(XANFOR runs back on stage)

XANFOR: Fine, fine, then get going before I take away your accent. Run!

(TVAPIFGSNY runs away)

XANFOR: Heh heh, isn't that precious? Now, I know that in the above excerpt, Fry and Leela sound a little out-of-character. But there's a very good reason, believe me. Just believe me. Now, it's time for Super Hero Guy Who's Only Purpose is to Humiliate Shiny!

(SHGWOPHS flies out onto stage, but trips up and tumbles into the brass section)

XANFOR: Ahh, life... Well, that's it for today, folks! Tune in next time, when we'll be sure to have three new office desk chairs, along with a think-tank and Internet scouring competition to discover Bill Gate's Social Security number, guest starring Tim Allen!

(XANFOR waves as we FADE TO BLACK)

Well peoples, I can appreciate that you enjoy the shipper aspect of the show, and I cannot stress enough that this is only my opinion and I hold nothing against shippers. The thing is that (in terms of cupcakes) what if you just don't like puding (btw: I love puding but for the purposes of this annalogy I hate it). But "The important thing is I'm meeting new people."

Xanfor, why do you need someone to bump your thread before you post your new fic?  Mods usually let double posts go if a) there's been a passage of time between the two posts, and b)the second post has some substance to it.  I was the last one to post in my thread, but when I've finished my latest update I'll just post it, regardless of whether or not anyone's bumped the thread.

@Venus and Ralph: There's a very good reason. A very good reason, believe me. Remember I said that I had a fascination with dualities? Well... These aren't exactly the same Fry and Leela you've known for so long.

And as for the bumping thing... I was testing to see if anyone cared enough to. Apparently not. Whaaaaaa! No one cares! Whaaaaaaa! Fine, I'll bump my thread. See if anyone cares. Hmph.   :p  ;)

I doubt that...because he doesn't actually SAY IT to her that often.  He told her in Parasites for the first time, and he told her at the tail end of her coma, but I don't think he's actually said "I love you" to her face-to-face at any other point...he wrote it in TKOS, but she didn't see it, and a love note (even one written in the stars) is still not "face-to-face."  In fact, he dismissed those very words as "too conventional" when perusing candy hearts, right in front of her...(wonder if that had anything to do with her unusual grouchiness about the issue throughout the rest of the episode... )

Sure, he often asks her to go out with him, but in "Time Keeps On Slippin" and even in "Devil's Hands," he only says the "L" word in the context of making Leela love HIM.  Most of the time he only refers to his emotions indirectly - as in "how I feel about you" or "my feelings for you."  Without the worms, he he only seems able to say "those three little words" in a note (which is still indirect)...or to a Leela who's comatose!

This seems pretty tragic, because look how she reacts when he DOES say it to her: she brought him home in PL, she married him in TKOS, and she awoke out of a two-week coma in "The Sting."

Wouldn't it be ironic if it turned out that all Fry had to do all along to "make Leela love him" is just say right out that he loves her...?     ;)

Btw, this is a shippy thread, and I've seen lot's of Fry/Leela, but no Amy/Kif.  I understand why Fry/Leela is more popular, but we can give Amy/Kif some recognition can't we?

Your Xanforness: No problem!  I admit I hadn't thought about it until Ralph said what he said, but then it was like a light went on.  (Who knows, perhaps this insight may find its way into MY story...I sure hope something does soon...    at my stubborn muse... )

I do think Leela would react a bit differently than in your blurb, but I just assumed that that Leela wasn't "our Leela."

BTW I added an edit to the top of my just-previous post, concerning your story.  Basically I'm glad you went ahead and posted it.   :)

Now, I honestly wish I could express that gladness by reading it right away, but I'm going to have to wait for the weekend, and I humbly beg your pardon.  It's just that, I KNOW me, if I start something that long on a work night I'll just keep going and going, because reading good shippiness is infinitely preferable than sleeping (especially when sleeping just brings the moment closer when I have to return to That Awful Place where I spend my weekdays...   :nono: )

So please be patient...I'm pretty wiped and I couldn't give it much attention now anyway.  Hopefully I won't have to work Saturday, so I'll be considerably less brain-dead then.

Oh, and please pardon my Colorful, Possibly Vaguely Midwestern Yokel for his absence.  He had to go back home, he's treasurer of the midwestern chapter of the Writer's Alliance of Trite Archetypes, Handily Accessible Cliches & Kitch, and he's overseeing a charity truck rally for the benefit of disadvantaged made-for-TV-movie script editors.  But he says "hallo."   :)

Xanfor: I read your fic, it's amazing how things can be changed when two roles of authority is switched and relationships are altered.

fryandlemon: The Fry/Leela reltionship is popular because there's alot of personality conflict and unresolved romantic tension. [Zapp] Some very sensual tension.[/Zapp] It overshadows the Kif/Amy ship because it's already resolved. Still, we shouldn't forget. Here's to Kif and Amy *raises glass of sham-pag-in*

That kind'a presumes Leela thinks of Fry as future husband/ boyfriend material.

She clearly does not.

Still, she wouldn't want her 'bestest friend' mutilated - that way, or any other.

I always thought that was a defensive reaction, either

1) ...to embarrassment over having been clumsy ( "I didn't make a mistake,, I just don't care!  Really!  And it had nothing to do with my eye! Stupid depth perception..." );

2) ...over having gotten distracted because she noticed how cute Fry's nose really is and how much she's grown accustomed to his face....    :flirt:

    • Hardly.
    • It is a statement of obdurate fact. No syllogism is involved.
    • Perhaps so, perhaps not; but still true.
Now, having said this, perhaps, maybe there's a one in a one in 10^24 chance that someday Leela may possibly think of Fry as more than just a good friend.

"But 'Space," I hear you ask, "Why the cause for optimism?"  :laff:

I don’t think Leela herself really knows. So she has an instinctive fear of revealing them...hence, she grabs for lame excuses when pressed for an answer, because that's the best she can come up with.
