Why did Slurms McKenzie have to die?

Couldn't he have just left his stereo in the tunnel and escaped like everyone else did? I can't imagine that his gyrations contributed to how quickly the roof collapsed.

Thanks,

He had no reason to live, and was willing to sacrafice himself and die partying. Also, I think he might have stayed to hold off the Slurm Queen just incase the stereo didn't cause it to collapse.

Really, like Fry said, "She squash you like a worm...squashing a smaller worm."  Slurm's was so small compared to the Queen that he wouldn't have slowed her at all.  He just wanted to die.  He was 'partied out'.

I think he also thought he could help by staying.

Those who don't think his gyrations could have contributed to the tunnel's collapse don't know how sensitive unstable structures can be.  The radio might have done it alone...but the radio and the dancing made it a much surer thing.

I, myself saw Slurms McKenzie in the comics.  My guess is, he probably secretly escaped.  On the show, he wanted to die because the only purpose of his life was partying which he was sick of.

So maybe since he's been seen in the comics, maybe he's living a secret life somewhere.

It's impossible to die in vein if you die partying!

In the show canon, he's buried and assumed dead.  The comics represent an "alternate canon" in which he survived the rockfall.

The title of this thread clearly poses the question in terms of the show canon.  The fact that he lives in the comics does not change the fact that he's dead as far as the show is concerned, at present anyway.

Slurms McKenzie died needlessly, but it was his wish. Therefore, he was a sacrificial slug, and his death assumes a mythological importance.

He wanted to die he thought there was no more reason to live. Or Maybe he was just to tired and didn't think to leave the stereo on and then leave.

this is slightly different, but you know how leela kicked that other worms head of ("You wish you slimy worm! HIIIYAA!" ) he became 2 worms, so wouldn't have slurms mcKenzie become a billion worms?

A worm cut in half can become two worms.  A worm crushed beneath a sneaker and the sidewalk just becomes worm guacamole.

So I'm told, though I don't recall having ever actually seen my birth certificate so I suppose I can't claim to be 100% certain.

First of all it was Planet Express, and secondly they partied for him on the basis that it honored his memory if not the character itself.

But then in the comics lots of things happen that didn't really happen.

Slurms had no will to live, the party within him died long ago. So with his breathe he shook it for that fat bitch of a queen to see. It was his way of giving her the middle finger.
