I just want some clarity on this question. In the episode where Fry's goes to that New York theme park and hopes in that 20th century car, he tells Leela he didn't drive a car because New York was so congested. Then in the Roswell episode he marks a remark about a Super Nova being comparable to his Chrysler (Chevy?) Nova car, and in the Bend Aid episode he talks about driving behind the tour band like in the past?? So can he drive or not?

I think so that he can drive. I mean we even saw him driving the VW van in "Bendin' in the wind" and the Jeep in "Roswell that ends well". In "Lesser of two evils" he just said that he didn't drive much, because of croweded New York City streets.   ;)

Welcome to PEEL Zamorano,

you might have a look into this thread, it's not really the answer you searched, but it is about Fry and his cars.

enjoy your stay here.   :)

Yeah..Fry just chose not to drive in NY because of the traffic, but he can if he wants.

I think you might have missed the joke :/

"Fry's too stupid to know if a car is in reverse or drive"

Thats why they set it up so much with the mirror thing  :)

Gff is right, he drives fine in other eps, also drives the ship quite nicely - in some eps.

Yeah he can drive  :)
He drives the car at Past-O-Rama, the Moon-Buggy, The VW van, and can pilot the ship.

Yeah, I think Fry could drive.  It seems he drives occasionally.  He even flew the P.E. Ship a few times.

I don't think flying the PE ship isn't as hard as it looks. I mean Amy learnt to operate the controls by playing an arcade game   :)

Depends on what your definition of driving is... Remeber one time he couldn't even drive that green Chevy Nova, and he could drive the VW "hippe van" later on, and the PE ship.. so, he may not have payed attention the first time..

Ask some New Yorkers how much car insurance is there. Not that Fry would pay for it it it were lower.

I live nowhere near NY, but I know it has to be a lot...if everything else is expensive... Guess that's the only way, to ask New Yorkers

Thanks for replying, but I just wanted to know if he can drive a car, and not a moon buggy or space ship  :p Well from the replies it seems Fry's just a real crappy driver. I was just confused when he said he never owned a car in one episode, and then talks about a car he once owned in another. But if Fry did say he didn't own a car in New York cause of the traffic, then is it plausible he owned a car (the Chevy Nova) when he wasn't living in New York, maybe he used to live somewhere else before being frozen??

Drive? I drive and I never put a car into drive, never have. I think you should've said 'Forward Gear' because then at least it covers both Manual and Automatic.

Maybe because Fry hadn't driven in so long he forgot how to drive, so by the time he got his VW he could remember how to drive.

Then he said it wasn't his GF, but then someone next door he knew, then he didn't know her, but she never closed her curtains

That's the scene when Leela suggested Fry end his sentences early I believe

It was.

With Fry driving I doubt he can manual 'cuase he seems to unco to be able to control his feet well enough for the use of the clutch and accelerator pedal and use his hand to shift through the gears all at the same time to do it.
But then again it is possible to change gears with out the clutch 'cause I can change up with out using the clutch.

Fry cannot drive a manual transmission ("stick shift" ) early on in the series. In Season 1, Space Pilot 3000, only Leela is able to drive "stick", otherwise there would have been a fight to be the one who pilots the PX ship.

Later on in the series, Season 3, Time Keeps On Slippin', Fry has obviously learned to drive stick, and shows his new-found knowledge off - he can pilot the PX ship.

Between these episodes, we watch Fry attempt to drive an old car at the Past-O-Rama museum - note that he does not know how the engine should sound, or how much gas to give it. Also note that he never drove in Old New York.

It seems that this incident may have been that which inspired him to brush up on his "skills", and learn to drive more professionally.

As for the moon buggies, they appear to be a go-kart type of vehicle. No skill is required, and so Fry was able to manage them with ease.

Fry has also demonstrated his inability to manage other simple manual tasks on other occasions, so I have no trouble believing that he was originally a non-driver.

He seems to handle a motorcycle with aplomb in "Bend-Her."  Motorcycles usually use a non-automatic transmission.

So do 1945 military issue Jeeps.  And, for that matter, so do old school Vanagons, as far as I know.  And Fry can clearly shake a stick.  I was actually impressed with his skills going down Lombard street in "Bendin' in the Wind."  Watch his eyes to see how far ahead he looks.  It's good stuff.  Then he replicates a bunch of Cary Loftin stunts from "Bullitt."  Just your average New York boy can't do that.

And my contention is that Fry's line about never driving in old New York was an exaggeration.  That line is lifted wholesale from Yogi Berra, and it's pretty much standard sarcastic New Yorker fare.  I think He drove his old Nova on ONY streets, albeit rarely, and it was an X-body Nova, as opposed to the '80s import Nova, and he probably misspent enough of his youth behind the wheel that he amassed a considerable knowledge of how to drive like a nutjob.  Hence the "Bendin' in the Wind" chase scene.

I had a theory about why he cocked up trying to back the Latura up in "Lesser of Two Evils" in the other thread, but it don't work too well.

As for TNUK's contention that Fry couldn't drive stick in SP3000, I think Leela just beat him to the punch when Farnsworth asked if anyone could drive stick.  I mean, he wouldn't naturally make the connection in what passes for his mind between the Chevy Nova and a spaceship the like of which he's never seen before.

Look how Fry drove the PE Ship in Bender Gets Made and Amazon Women in the Mood.  He's not so good at it.
