In L'LLiS, the DOOP seemed to a greedy, thoughtless organization that sucked Vergon 6 dry. But in BBA, they seemed to be a well-intended organization decicated to peace. So, are they greedy, misguided or what?

Yeah, I was going to vote 2 - because, let's face it, Brannigan's their main problem - but then I realized, thinking back to BBA, that he is mainly in his position because of incompetent administrators, e.g. the Secretary (whose name I have suddenly forgotten.)  Also, they seem to lend out their flagship and highest-decorated leader, dumbass though he may be, to Earth at the drop of a proverbial hat, endorsing idiotic wars like in WITHW.  All I can say is that it's a good thing the real UN doesn't do that with America, or we'd all be pretty screwed right about now.

Heh.  I' a great persuader.  Now if only this had been an actual debate so I could make a dirty joke.  Oh well.  You guys seem to have figured it out, but for the record I voted 3.

I'm at a conundrum, Kif.  I looked at N-o-R's post, and he does bring up some good arguments.  Yet, on the other hand, if DOOP was really so incompentently run, how could it exist for so long?  I can't remember, but in BBA, I believe they mentioned some of the DOOP's mighty triumphs?  There must be something right going on in its inner ranks.  Just because Brannigan screwed a lot up, that doesn't mean the administration is flawed, just some people who let him get so high.

But I can never vote against Zapp.

Well, Hermes did say that the DOOP was just like the UN, so I'll go with "They're greedy with no redeming qualities."

This poll is based at most on our speculations and obvious targets of the satire. I was always interested in the organization as a whole and would like to see more ships than just Nimbus.

John, I believe David A was calling the UN greedy with no redeming qualities...

Well, I would have to say they are just misguided. They'd be better off without Zap.

Sometimes sheer ineptness can be the cohesive force of an organization, i.e., they're all to stupid to figure out there's a better way to do things.  The only intelligent member I've seen in the organization (Kif, natch) is too unambitious and nonconfrontaitional to do anything about it.

[sarcasm]Of course, they did make peace with the horribly belligerent Neutrals...[/sarcasm]

I don't know that you could say the DOOP as a whole is either good or evil.  Some of its members might be one or the other, though.  We really don't know how long DOOP has been around.  They probably started out as a well-intentioned organization, and then ended up being led by the inept and the greedy, just like most groups of the sort.

Yeah, because one member of an organization of millions with no charisma who sits in complete fear at the prospect of doing anything against the rules can easily make a difference right?

I voted for two, because it doesn't say DOOP would be good just without Zapp. It says anyone like him. For example anyone who might've promoted him to such a high position.
