I was watching 104 - Love's Labors Lost in Space and when Brannigan starts talking about Brannigan's Law, (you know, Directive b10.81)  i had a thought.
i always had thought of it as a law that Brannigan had created, making it Brannigan's Law... but now i think that the law was created BECAUSE OF Brannigan.  he interfered with the development of a species (probably by trying to have sex with it) and they had to create Brannigan's Law to prevent it from happening again!

Yeah, that actually makes sense. Kinda like the Prime Directive in Star Trek wasn't made before the Federation had screwed up several worlds (as witnessed in "A Piece Of The action" ).

Ofcourse it's typical for Zapp to think it's a great honor the law is named Brannigan's Law.

Or maybe he just calls it Brannigan's Law because he likes to think he had something to do with its creation.

I think that JDHannan's idea makes the whole Brannigan's law idea funnier, so maybe thats how the writers meant for it to come across.

I thought he would have made the whole thing up to try impress Leela. I mean who would actually listen or pay attention to what Zapp says. But JDHannan's theory makes sense.

To have a man enforce a DOOP restraining order written specifically against himself and have the DOOP armada at his disposal ?

That's so conundrum inducing it just might work!

Very well reasoned. Personally, I wouldn't have thought this myself, but it makes perfect sense.

That makes everything even funnier, I love it! At first i thought Zapp made it up, because he's an idiot, but that makes sense, and adds new humor.

So this means that Zapp holds more power than anyone else because he can create his own laws by violating them? I'm getting confused.

No, Zapp didn't create it-- I'm guessing they're saying that the DOOP created the law because of him.  Maybe he calls it "Brannigan's Law" because it has to do with his actions (interfering with an underdeveloped planet), but not because he created it.  Yes, it does make sense... I guess he's so proud of having a law "named after him" just to make it sound like he's some sort of hero... but in reality his pride is masking an utterly shameful action!  I like it!  :D

"The Democratic Order Of Planets prohibits interfering with undeveloped worlds. It's a little rule known as "Brannigan's Law."
There is nothing about the animals in that, so i have to think it was created, like the star trek thing, after brannigan sent wave after wave of his own men at an undeveloped planet...
good thought, and on the right track, but no animals...

Zapp always struck me as one of those big dumb jocks in school who never did anything but harass other kids in class. My guess is the military was his only option, but because he was so giant and inept at picking on others, he climed the ranks easily. Of course, as a royal attention whore, he's proud to mention anything with his name at any given time. You guys may be right, thanks for the new viewpoint.

I don't know... I don't think it takes a hero to wipe out the retiree people of the assisted living nebula or the pacifists of the Gandhi nebula, either.
But, Zapp's disgusting idioticness and cowardice are what make him a loveable jerk.  :D

But remember the killbots "Love's Labours Lost in Space?"  Remember the victory over the Spiderians in "Three Hundred Big Boys?"  (Sure, Kif was shown destroying one Spiderian, but that doesn't mean Zapp DIDN'T do anything!)  I doubt he bought those victories with a $300 tax refund!

Zapp: The Democratic Order Of Planets prohibits interfering with undeveloped worlds. It's a little rule known as "Brannigan's Law."
Leela: But people already interfered. That planet was mined completely hollow.
Zapp: Yes. By a Democratic Order Of Planets mining crew.
Leela: This doesn't make any sense.
Zapp interfered by minning the planet hollow, DOOP made Brannigan's Law, and now Zapp upholds it.
