What's up with the guy in the #9-shirt?
He's been hanging around in the background since the start of the series and still no explanation. Some strange cult or Beatles White album-reference?

Yeah that's what I think, I think Matt Groening is a big fan of the Beatles. He had George Harrison, and Paul McCartney to guest star on Simpsons. I don't know maybe I'm just stoned or something. Goo goo ga joob!

Don't forget Ringo was on a Simpsons episode as well.

In fact ALL the beatles, even John, were in a Simpsons episode in the Yellow Submarine (Cool bit of animation there that reflected the original film beautifully). Did I see that or did I just dream it?

"Look, it's Lisa in the sky", "No diamonds though"
It's from Last exit to Springfield.

And on the #9-thing. John Lennon released an album called Walls and bridges where the cover had a picture of a boy wearing a shirt with the #9 on it. It looks nothing like the one on the show though.

He was meant to be part of a caste system in the future, a slave or something, never wrote a story about it I am affraid.

Check out the Season1 Commentary for "A Flight to Remember"

(geez this IS an old thread)

Yeah, it's sure old. But what I've thought is that 2003 might be the last year of Futurama, so what else will we, fans, have to do but re-watching the old episodes? And (the nerdiest ones  :) ) - re-watching it frame by frame, tryin' to find something, noone noticed before. That's what I tried with SP3K, and after approx. 1000000 re-watchings  :) managed to find at least 3 things of this kind, including this #9 dude.

Beck, re your email: the caste system is discussed in the audio commentary to "A Flight To Remember", right after Zapp christened the ship using Leonardo DiCrapios head.

How the Hell could Matt groening not have a thing for the Beatles?

Dosen`t everyone remember the Simpsons episode when Bart and Millhouse Trashed Ned Flanders` Beatles Shrine, does it bother anyone that Flanders had over 100,000$ in Beatles Merchandise and he still lives next to the Simpsons??

do i see a Plot Hole?

The original idea for Futurama was that everyone would be ranked by number and have to wear the same neutral clothes. Since this didn't work out the #9 man just shows up in the background now and again.

Yeah... Like Grim said - check out that commentary.  He comes up in the background a lot - he's one of those non speaking characters that the layout artist use to flesh out close-up crowds in the background.  If you'll notice in AOI1 at the end of section one they do it using Mayor Poopenmeyer, Terry, Ipgee and Lou, among others.  That seems to be his main function after the caste system was dropped.  He's all over the place.

Have we seen him after the 2ACV episodes ended? I can't remember any scenes with him off the top of my head.

I'm not sure - it would make sense for him to still be around, but I don't have the Season 3 DVDs yet, so I dunno. Gods, its been ages since I saw any post-2ACV episodes!

Right you all want the deal with the number nine guy. Well this is a basic interpretation of the commentary for A Flight To Remember.
The number nine guy was a zombie. They were originally meant to do something in one of the episodes but they never got round to it. The number on their shirt indicates their rank.
Check out the commentary for further information on the Number Nine guy.

Sh*t! Everybody's speaking about these commentaries. How about poor guy here, in Russia, who's got absolutely no opportunity to listen to them? Maybe somebody for some purpose have already made the transcripts of them? If so, I'd be soooo grateful to find that out!

I have faaar too much time on my hands! (study leave, you see!) I'm transcribing them, but it'll be a while before any emerge, cos I'm typing them verbatim off the episodes, rather than copying the subtitles.  Mostly cos most of what Rich Moore (yes again) doesn't come up in the subtitles.

I'll let you know.

Sil!
Thanx a many! If I ever receive it from you, I promise to send back the russian translation for you to enjoy  :) But hush - mr. mArk here doesn't like the talks like this, as, I guess, you sorta violate some lousy US copyrights by doing so.  :)
Please, send me an e-mail if you manage to "verbatimize" something.
