I searched for this and didn't find anything so here it goes: Why is it that in I Second That Emotion, he bakes a cake that looks good, when in other episodes, such as 30% Iron Chef, he if terrible at cooking?

good looking food doesn't always mean good tasting food. nibbler eats just about anything, so he can't be that good a judge of food edibility.

i guess he figured later on that 'good' food should look the way it tastes (gourmet cooking 101). of course, he has no 'taste', so why care how it looks.

Likewise to what feralHuman has said, in "30% Iron Chef", his food looked kinda funky but apparantly tasted kinda ... fun-kay.

But the food that was fun-kay was made with ordinary water laced with LSD.

practice makes perfect... wait can he even taste food?   I know in 'A Fish Full of Dollors' he spits out the anchovy pizza, but listen to the commentary... I think it was Matt Groaning who said he can't taste food.

Bender himself says he can't taste in "30% Iron Chef."  He DOES have a sense of smision, though.

I don't recall the various animals he cooked at the end of "The Problem with Popplers" looking or tasting particularly bad.

He only spat out that Pizza because he wanted to be popular..

Thats right! Bender just saw everyone else spitting stuff out, so he did just to be cool. Also, what do you think smission does?

Perhaps let him sense magnetic fields. That would be a useful sense to have for Robots. Or, it could be something to do with electricity. Robots have something to do with electricity, in my understanding.  Although, "Smission" sounds like a cross between smell and vision. Perhaps he can see smells or smell sights (although he is usually lost when his eyes are out, looking around on the floor and stuff). So, perhaps he can see smells. What use that would be is anybody's guess. Like mine. My guess: used to detect airborne contaminants without exposing the robot directly to the contaminated environment. Hey, it could be useful.

I think we'll learn what smission does around the same time we find out exactly how the L-unit is necessary to intergalactic flight.

It seems to me that all of Bender's processes can be broken down as mathematical. It's possible, then, that he has a high 'margin of error' or somesuch in the field of cooking.
