In the Season 4 episode of Taste Of Freedom, when Nixon is greeted on the stage to celebrate Freedom Day with a speech... one of the bang members are playing an holophoner, as you can see from the grab below i've circled out the person (Not the best pic but my PowerDVD is playing up and i can't take a picture of what I'm going to describe next.)

When that person plays it, no image comes out? But whenever a holophoner is played an image comes out. (to get the best view of this watch the episode  ;))

Perhaps the images are their clothes and everyone is just in their underpants, like in The Devils Hands...Hey why not it is freedom day? Or in fact mabey it is something better... ;)

Perhaps it isn't a holophoner, just a 'phoner.  You know, a holophoner without the "holo" part. To impress people.

It's probably just some kind of regular wind instrument that just have an uncanny resemblance to a holophoner.

Maybe the person just can't play the holophoner and wants to look fancy? It is Freedom Day after all.

I wouldn't think that framegrab is clear enough to say "It is a holophoner"

IF it's a holophoner, who says an image HAS to come out when it's played?  It's just the same as using a TV to listen to a radio show.

Old thread... okay... my explanation:
The projector lens cap was affixed because the thing was only being used for audio.

There. Problem solved.

Quick question: do the holographic images that a holophoner produces are determined by what is played? I thought that the player has control over the graphics that the holophoner projects. So, I assumed that the player of that particular holophoner decided to give no visuals for that particular occasion.

That depends:

Someone who had lost her sight would have to base the holograms on her memories of what things looked like.  This would be akin to painting someone's portrait from memory without using a photo as a reference.

Someone who had been born blind would create holograms based only on imagination.  These might look very different from a sighted person's holograms.  For one thing, a person who had been born blind would probably have no concept of color.

I saw that myself.  There was no image coming out of the holophoner!  I saw this scene on my DVDs.

David A: I disagree on the second. Just as a deaf person can learn to speak perfectly*, so it
should be possible for a blind person to master the holophoner.

And ActionLaPointe gets my vote for winner of the thread.

*most don't, as it requires a tremendous investment of time practicing with someone who speaks, but it is possible

I KNOW!!!! They just threw that in there so people could try to figure out what the deal was but there was no real reason the image didn't work or no real proof whether or not that was a hf (yay for abbreviations i make up =D)
