hi sorry if someone has already noticed this but in a season 3 commentary for "the cyber house rules" Matt says that Adlay, the tall doctor  :D , is the ONLY character he has ever drawn that has eyebrows BUT!!!! in "time keeps on a skippin'" Curly joe, a globetrotter has eybrows!!!   :flirt:
What do you make of that????

And the "Sleazebag who owns the ultimate robot fighting league" has eyebrows. Nixon too.
I haven't listened to the S2 commentry yet, but if this is the case, me thinks he's wrong.

Matt's exact line in the commentary is: "You know I just notice that in any characters I've ever designed I've never drawn eyebrows. So the doctors eyebrows ... I find very disturbing."

So the explanation is simple: Matt didn't create Adlai, Curly Joe, Abner DoubleDeal or Richard Nixon's head. The layout artists did.

That's still pretty interesting.  I honestly never noticed that none of Matt's characters have eyebrow (and that on top of having no chins and overbites.).

Maybe since Adlai was a doctor, he got eyebrow implants. Like how Leela got the second eye.

It's possible, you know..

Does that mean Matt didn't design Milhouse either?

I think Matt really doesn't create half the stuff he's given credit for... He just kinda starts stuff and then holds the reigns....

Well for instance, he said himself, most of his main characters he doodles an idea of, it then gets taken away and professionally done, then he takes it again and Groeningiseses...eseses it. If you know what I mean.

Victor the car salesman has them too. Because he has to push one of them back down to make it look like he's sad when Amy tells him that her parents are paying and they're increibdly rich  :laff:

What about the Simpsons, does that go for that too?

I wonder if he designed Milhouse...

Are there any Life in Hell characters with eyebrows?

If there are, that would settle this.

Maybe Whatshisname (Adlia or whatever) is just suffering from selective balding?

Woah, I never noticed that there are very few Simpsons/Futurama characters with eyebrows.  I am amazed.  Nice cheekbones mind.

Well, I guess we can safely say that Willie from The Simpsons has eyebrows... VERY big eyebrows.
I actually thought Matt designed all the majors and semi-majors himself (and then had them cleaned up by the pros), but if he didn't design Milhouse, I'm not so sure anymore.

[EDIT]How could I not have noticed the missing word? Now the post makes sense.[/EDIT]

I only though that Matt had qualms about drawing people with each eye going in an opposite direction never knew about the eyebrow thing but yeah a lot of characters in Matt's shows do have eyebrows.

Milhouse's eyebrows are detachable, like his mothers.
"Luanne was still putting on her face. She doesn't want anyone to know she doesn't have any eyebrows. What? You don't!"
In a later episode they have a rocket in the backyard with Milhouse and I think the nerds with him. When the rocket blows up Milhouse says: "My eyebrows! My beautiful eyebrows!" and Bart is wearing them on his face.

Perhaps he just doesn't remember designing any characters with eyebrows.  He is human you know.  After all, he (and others) makes tons of mistakes in the Simpsons season 1 commentary, being sure that Bart never said Cowabunga when he said it in another episode that season, and saying that "this is the first time X has appeared" three times in a row for the same thing... that kind of thing.  It's possible he just noticed the eyebrows, ralized it's not a common feature, did a quick mental check for eyebrowed designs and made his comment, forgetting about Milhouse, etc.

If you look at the character designs on the DVDs, on some of the final character models, there's a little stamp next to it with:

  • A space for the director to initial his approval (SOS 3 being Swinton O Scott III for example)
  • A check box for Matt Groening to indicate his approval
  • A check box for DXC to indicate his approval
  • A check box for Mili Smythe (senior designer and producer) to indicate her approval.

But... on most of these, not all the boxes are checked by all three of them - it may be that Matt didn't actually approve the finalised design because he was somewhere else or something.  There are several where it's only Mili Smythe or DXC who've approved the thing.  Who knows.
