Owls have replaced rats as the vermin of choice in the city.

Maybe the Prof. did some kind of experiment where he mixed pigeon and owl DNA. So far we only saw that kind in his building. I think.

It's all part of the joke. The first thing that pops into your mind is What the hell is up witht he owls. And you kinda laugh at the joke that owls are pest out of all of the animals they could have chosen.

I can think in an explanation;

Since there are no more trash in New New York (or, at least, not so much like thereīs today) the rats came out of the sewers, famine, adn begin attacking the people (and the pigeons as well). So, some cientist (like our dear Professor) created a race of super-owls that can live in cities. The owls ate all the rats, and begin living (and spreading) by all the big cities of the world.

Well, itīs just a theory...  ;)

Blast from the past: look! It's mine and Velour's first posts. Damn we are cool.

Man, I can't believe I've pissed away a whole year on this board. Time really flies when you are a nerd.

The owls are the new pigeons of New New York, the new feathered rats if you will. And, as shown in Seinfeld, they still have a 'deal' with the humans when it comes to flying out of the way.

Funny, in the commentaries on the DVD Matt Groening and David Cohen (I think it's matt and David) talks about owls too. Matt asks if the fans (us, woohooo) understands the joke about owls being the vermin of NNY, and David assures him that we do get it.

I thought I saw an owl in the park today but I think it was a hawk.  They look amazingly alike, except I think owls are fatter.

Their bodies are squatter too, and they also have their eyes together and in front, unlike eagles' eyes on either side of the head. Come to think of it, eagles are nothing like owls, at least not the ones I've seen. Stop messing with my head!

If owls are such a big problem in NNY, why don't they simply import some Bolivian tree lizards. That should do the trick (just keep a few Chinese needle snakes handy for later).

No need for a gorilla eating spider.  Come winter, all the gorillas will freeze anyway.

Well, yeah, in the sewers. The owls OWN the upper world, baby!

Actually, a rat appears in the (Anti-)Chrysler building in "The Honking." Of course, that's probably Detroit--which, given the funky geography of "Futurama," may be part of Russia now--so the Owl Problem may be exclusive to the Eastern Seaboard.

Question: I'm doing some research for my fanfic, and I need to know if there's been any scenes of owls IN FLIGHT. Cellery has a pic of one flying in an earlier post, but is that from an episode, or is it a fanart? I can't recall seeing them fly at any time... If they really fly in the future, I gotta come up with a different joke.

Cellery's owl is from the episode "Mothers Day". It appears just before the scene where Mom's sons come to visit the PE crew.

What episodes are owls in?

cellery has a frame grab from "Mothers Day" and I know that there is an owl caught in a spiders web inside Fry's and Bender's apartment in the Hermes episode.

Fry tosses his muffin to a trio of owls in "Parasites Lost." Even though the owls are vermin, they're drawn pretty cutely.

Fishy revived it to mark his 1 year "anniversary" at PEEL, and the rest of us jumped on it like starved voltures at a zebra carcass. Generated a nice little discuss about owls, I think.
