Well. as this season seems to use only Leela and Bender as main characters, that image yet bears a certain symbolism.

It's certainly just a joke. But I really liked it.
I love seeing Leela and Bender interact. It's a dynamic that hardly gets any attention, and when it does, it leads to some great jokes ("So... you're a robot?").
Exactly. That was my favorite part of last night's episode, precisely because those two characters don't get enough one-on-one moments. Their friendship is based on this strange mix of mutual annoyance and disgust with one another, genuine affinity, and shared passions (they both like getting drunk, after all, and they can be much less sentimental about things than Fry. Speaking of which, they also both share a passion for Fry...albeit, to different degrees), and I think it's neat when the writers explore it somewhat.

Personally, I do hope that was the last of Bender/Leela we have ever seen... Bender is an over the top-character, and often works on a "nothing can go wrong" basis in a supporting role. He can be used to add the exact amount of whackyness to a plot carrier. Yet, Bender's shenanigans can quickly become too much, so another character to tune him down is often needed/helpful. I would of course not appreciate that character to be Leela (as I already stated: There are reasons BECAUSE of which I do watch Futurama, but Leela is too often the main reason DESPITE of which I do watch the show )

That's fair enough, Hein, but I don't think any character but Leela would be able to adequately counteract Bender's zaniness. Fry just feeds into it; Zoidberg is too pathetic and passive; Farnsworth is kind of crazy himself. Hermes and Amy have been paired up with Bender in the past to decent results--in "Lethal Inspection" and "Proposition Infinity," respectively (though, actually, I think I prefer the Amy/Bender dynamic in "The Series Has Landed" to anything that's been done with those two characters together since)--I guess, but episodes like that are rare. I find Bender at his most entertaining (and least reprehensible or grating) when he's paired up with both Fry and Leela (the relationship between the trio being one of the main draws of the show for me), or with Leela alone.
That's not to say that I don't like Bender/Fry stories--although Bender and Fry's bromance, as it was portrayed in the latter half of season six, actually made me hate both characters a little. I love that Fry is the one human Bender would never kill (except for in "Ghost in the Machines"...which I hate), and his affinity for the guy has led to some touching moments ("Jurassic Bark" comes to mind); I get that those two are best friends and roommates and heterosexual life partners and whatever else. However, I find Bender and Leela's friendship more interesting, probably because that whole man-and-woman-banter-well-but-don't-want-to-bang-one-another is less expected and overplayed territory for a TV show. And, I don't know, I think it's an area worth exploring every once in a while, even if it's not terribly overt or the driving force of the episode or anything--which is exactly what was done in "The Thief of Baghead," to good results.

The only person I can think of who would be happy about a Bender/Leela relationship is Unmentionable, because Fry would be available to date.
Don't mention that douche!

I agree, it was a one-time joke, a reaction to Calculon's brilliant dying performance. Don't mention that douche!

If the authors wanted to ship those two, I'd laugh. They deserve each other. There would be a lot of conflict, to put it simply.

Oh holy space pope, now we have a Bender and Leela shipper...
Don't laugh -- after I dropped the Fry/Leela 'ship after BBS, the dynamic between the robot and the cyclops fell under quite a bit of careful scrutiny by me. My conclusion? It could happen. It could happen indeed....

Oh...and sometimes for some reason it seems like Bender is sexually attracted to her.....but then again, he is one devious bastard....just the thrill of sinning by having robosexual thoughts might be enough to increase his criminal ego.
Stop judging, this isn't that far out
Look back at all of Bender's other girls. He broke up with them quick. So for him to have a little something for Leela, is pretty unlikely. Also, think about how he hates humans, how he thinks many things humans do are "sick". It simply wouldn't work out. Although Leelas temper and Bender's attitude are both a little similar........ But go back to PI, Bender kind of hinted the whole him attracted to amy thing. Later on they just broke up, cause Bender can sometimes get sick of 1 girl. Buut, we don't know anything yet. These just might be jokes. I'm going to see if I can be able to confirm this on Futurama Live tonight.

Deep. The twist ending to the entire series will be... Bender and Leela end up together. LOL!
