When Fry played the Holophoner in Leela's appartment (Parasites Lost), his right hand was the upper hand.
When he played alone in his appartment, his left hand was the upper hand.

Maybe you can play it in many different ways, and depending on what hand you use and where you position it, it affects the sound.

Maybe he realised that when his right hand was the upper hand he played like crap and changed it to his left :hmpf:...

Maybe...but as real life music instruments always have a fixed grip, I would label that as a mistake. With flutes, it's ALWAYS the left hand to be the upper hand, with a guitar, it's ALWAYS the left hand pressing the strings, while the right is doing the picking, etc...(Okay...there are reversed guitars for left-handed folks, but even then it's ALWAYS the right hand pressing the strings and the left doing the picking).

I commend you on the rather immense nerdiness of this observation.

It's probably a fluke. I mean, you can hold a baseball bat either way, but the Holophonor seems to be significantly more complex than a stick of metal.

That doesn't make you active musicians any less of a nerdy bunch.   ;)

It's the year 3000, for all we know the instrument can magically re-arrange its fingering depending on how you hold it.

Possibly, I mean wouldn't that be swell? However, then it may as well just play itself instead don't you think? I'd have thought an instrument like a Holophoner needs heart and soul to play beautifully, pation, devotion and skill to master, no magic tricks...
