In some episodes Bender is getting out of control when he hits a magnet. He starts to act weird, sing, dance en stuff.
I just saw in the episode of “The Cyber house rules”. In that episode, Bender is hanging up the illustration of the kids inside him, with… a magnet, and nothing weird happens…

How is this possible?

i think this only happens when the magnet is either 1) real strong or 2) on his head.
could be mistaken there tho'...

Magnetic field falls off as a function of the inverse of the distance between the objects squared (right)?

What about in "I Second that emotion" when he gets his head stuck on the magnet on the can opener?

It doesn't depend of the part of the body. Look at "The series has landed", Amy catchs Bender with a giant magnet on his back.

I think it depends of the size. Look at the bow tie in "A flight to remember", or the metal goatee in "Bendless love". Those small items don't make him crazy. But the msgnets from Luna Park, Bendin' in the wind, etc. do.

Do you remember the second episode about their trip to the moon? Fry buys a few magnets and  t-shirts for "fools who buy thing for other fools  ;) ". Bender gets crazy of that small magnet.
how do you explain this?

he got crazy because every magnet on his head will make him sing folk-songs. and what did fry do? he put it on bender's head. so he had a reason to get crazy.

i know spaceman, but the point is, sometimes he did en sometimes he didn't.

in this situations he did:
-  a small magnet on his head (the series has landed)
- a big magnet on his whole body (the series...)

in this situations he didn't:
- a bow tie on his neck(A flight to remember)
- on his door (The Cyber house rules)
- a metal goatee on his head(Bendless love)

do anyone still see a rule in this?

Maybe there are different kind of magnets in the year 3000, like, magnets that don't screw up robot's inhibition units.

could be,... right?

Nope, listen to the DVD, they had problems on this idea but they said that it is only if it is on his head and head only. (Comentary A Flight To Remember)

Yup, the inverse square law. Applies to gravity, magnetic fields, light sourcing etc.
Basicly anything that is finite that moves to fill a 3 dimensional space.

Inhibition units problems may also depend on magnet orientation, not just power/distance^2.

If you listen the audio commentaries for A Flight to Remember and Bendless Love it is stated that magnets only screw up Benders brain if placed next to it e.g. his forehead and dont affect him anywhere else e.g his chin which is why the bowtie and the beard dont make him sing folk songs.
