I bet most of you didn't notice that in "A Head In The Poles", when Amy goes to the dude at the stand, the sign above him reads "Dudes For the Legalisation Of Of Hemp".

It has "of" writin twice but I bet you read it once. This isn't a typo it's a trick that fools the brain. Don't worry, you're only human.

Nah.  Let me get out our brochure.

*Takes out and munches on cheeseburger.*

Oh, and the "of of" thing.  I'll have to check that, but it's the
the sort of word-trickery that is often very hard to catch even
the eighth time around.  I'll have to go back and look at the
the episode to confirm.  Nice catch, HG Blob!

Read it again.  I believe you'll find that the fourth word is actually "Legalation".

Thanks!  Although....

I can hardly take credit for it.  As H. G. Blob noted, it was in Futurama before I posted it.  Although...

The writers of Futurama can't take original credit for it either, however very funny and hard to catch it is.

This duplication of "the" or "of" between printed lines goes back, like, a hundred years or more.  It's the verbal equivalent of an optical illusion.  So, you know, you're not really supposed to get it until it's pointed out.  It's a Futurama writers' geek joke -- one of my favorite kinds of joke.

P.S.  "Legalation"?  Dang, now I'll have to go back and check that darn episode again.  See, even when you know you're being tricked, you can be tricked.

if you go to gotfuturama.com

then episode guide, them go to the bottom of the page and choose your season, then at the bottom of each little episode prolile, click on "# Frame Grabs". most episodes have more than 200.

most of you prolly already knew that.

I doubt it's a mind trick for the viewers or a typo, it's due to the fact that the character who made the sign is clearly too high to notice

Hey, dude.  No way that that sign is
a comment on the Hemp Party.  I mean, Futurama
writers are very keen on sly in-jokes.  They would
would certainly know about the tendency for
readers to gloss over occasional repetitions.  That's
an old, old reading phenomenon.

I mean, I've used it before.  It's a classic joke.  But
I'm sure Futurama writers would never ever insinuate
that stoners would be the sort of folks who would
would write such a thing on their banner.  No.  Not at all.

Uh... Tom... You used an extra "would" there... So, tell me, what do you smoke?

Just one extra "would"?   ;)  Just one, you say?

Oh, and I get my "cigars" from Hermes, of course.  But that's not a cigar.  And it's not mine.

(Oh, wait, maybe it is.)
