after watching it, when bender throws seymour into the pit... he goes and starts to fall in... then fry chases... the professor goes and rants about how only dolomite can survive the heat... but if you watch when bender dives in... and in doing so loses the cape and hat, they simply float at the top... that always bothered me

i assume dolomite would be heavy... and expensive... and hard... i don't think capes made of dolomite would move in the wind

Actually, I have a dolomite clothes factory in Malawi, and the show's producers contacted me during principal photography for this episode, and commissioned a dolomite cape and hat for Bender.

They were surprisingly affordable.

Well, you may be looking at it wrong.  Why assume they are floating up?

I think its better to assume they are following Bender down deeper into the lava, and it looks like the cape is floating, but actually, its staying still.

Furthermore - Dolomite isnt hard.  Its a type of carbonate, which are generally soft - (most known is calcite)  Its hardness is about 4.  One of the reasons it can deal with being in the magma (yah it should be magma and not lava, because its technically underground, and magma is only called lava once it has hit the surface) because magma and heat and pressure will actually create minerals like dolomite from the original rocks (changing its chemical composition)

Yah, Im a geology major

Edit: more info on dolomite

haha... i like your thinking slackit02... but watch it again, the cape and hat clearly come off... and stay ontop of the "lava" for about 2 secs...

blah! Ill watch it again when I get to that episode in the series.  and I just started back at the pilot last night so youve got awhile :P

Anyways, I know they would melt or burn or whatever, but they might be ok for 2 seconds
