In "The Devil's Hands are Idle Playthings" (as well as the other episode with the holophoner), the holophoner is obviously able to recreate several instruments.

However, when Fry is writing his opera on the balcony (when Leela hears and investigates), the holophoner sounds amazing!  I am determined to recreate that sound, but I can't figure out what instrument/modifications to the sound were used to create it.  Does anyone know what instrument created this sound?

It sounds like a flute of some sort ... but don't ask me which kind in specific.  My original thoughts was it was a pan flute, but it could be a standard concert flute, or both.  But I really don't know for sure.

I thought the sound was a little too deep and full to be a flute, like they put a little reverb on it?  Hmmm...

It's a woodwind instrument. I think it's a piccolo.

I thought that piccolos were really high-pitched.

Piccolos are extremely high pitched - definitely not a piccolo.  It's definitely something on the lower end... maybe a low-pitch flute, like a Bb flute?  I've never actually heard one in person, so I don't have any good memories for comparison.

The instrument that the sound and look the Holophoner is the English Horn

The English horn sound is heard in the lower passages, and the oboe in the higher. Bassoon is the mellow lows and highs (oboe and English horn are nasally), and synth flute comes in occasionally, but not as often.

I agree with Shaucker on this one, as I did research on this a while back.  Unfortunately an English Horn isn't exactly cheap to buy, but an Oboe is pretty affordable.  Thinking of getting one.

And I do like when he's composing it on the balcony... I'd like to find if that was an actual piece from some work, added as a hidden easter egg, or was just written for the show.

If my memory serves me correctly, I think in the commentary they mentioned something about the sheet music.  I'd have to watch it again and check, but I think it was actually suppossed to be sheet music from like Bach or Beethoven or something.

The sheet music was from a Beethoven piece (one of his symphonies, I think), but the balcony solo in question was a Tyng original.

^Either it was just a slip, or something else.

And that something else is: <Remember when Leela said only a few people could play it in the world? Well, even though she said they're not very good at it, there's always the off chance someone could be good. It's possible that those kids are that off chance.>

Or, (I'm grasping at straws here)Maybe they were like genetically engineered to be good holophoner players!  That or the wizards did it.  ;)

Oh, sure, blame the wizards!

Either Leela was mistaken, or in the time that lapsed between PL and TDHaIPt the holophoner became more popular, and people started learning it.  That's just my opinion, though.

I think the sound of the Holophoner is more like a synthesizer. Doesn't really sound like one instrument

There's a thread about that somewhere in the archives. The deliberation was that it kinda looked like a holophoner, but there were no holo-effects.
Oh, and whoever said there was clarinet is wrong.

(if anyone wants the written to the Grumpy Snail, I did that in my free time)

By 'written' I assume you mean the sheet music (or equivilent)  ;)  If you wouldn't mind I'd like to have a peek at it.  I'm sure if I tried to play it on my sax I'd sound similar to Fry, pre-Robot Devil's hands.   :laff:  (I've only had the sax for about 3 weeks now, so I'm still a newbie)

They are different instanments depending on whether it is good playing or bad playing. ON the grumpy snail it sounds like it could be an alto sax or maybe sop sax with a heavey reed... Although there are alterations in pitch (done artificially) that makes it hard to tell. When the Instrament is played well it sounds like a Flute possibly a tenor flute. but its heavily reverbed. There is also background sounds which sound like low end glass chime with this.

The holophoner looks and sounds an aweful lot like an oboe mixed with a panflute.
