It's pretty clear that the worms removed the portion of pipe inside Fry's body before patching him up. There was also a pause before the worms went to work on the actual repairs. I'm just saying that Fry's torso would have been extremely unstable with a four-inch section of spine missing even for a few seconds.
I'm getting really sick of these wizardian explanations. In retrospect I regret the broadcasting of THoH X.

aaahh no.they built up a super-filigran structure nobody could have ever seen,it would have held fry´s body even without restoring it to the original layout,but it would have looked crappy.that´s why they rebuilt it.
