He gets paid but he's not a wise investor as shown in Devils Hands Are Idle Playthings he bought 8 copies of the news paper and Fry's holophoner record set. In the commentaries it was revealed that the writers didn't think to make him poor until the second season so there is every possibility that Zoidberg had at least some money the first season invested it very badly and lost it all or he just doesn't flaunt it so everyone thinks that he's poor.

Zoidberg was rich until "a loobster in love" where he was due to die.. now if we all knew we are going to die a certain day and we didnt have any relative (or any desire to) to inherit our money wouldnt we spend it all until that day?

Zoidberg spent all his money until that day (he is seeing hadling a big ammount to Bender to bet on himself) , but since he didnt die he then is broken from onwards   :D

2. it states in the comintary of the valintins episode between fry/amy that it was the first episode theres a zoidberg is poor joke in it.

This is probably way off but it would seem from Zoidbergs flashbacks that his family was kindave rich and up scale.

I mean his mother was ashamed that he wanted to be a comedian instead of a docter and then because he wanted to be a docter instead of a comedian.

Yeah, I agree with Rex- in the flashback, they look like they have a pretty upper middle class house, and in the episode "Future Stock" it is shown that zoidberg owns 51 % of Planet Express's stocks

That is a very good point. I never thought of that. It makes perfect sense and I think that you're probably right.

I think Hermes is putting a stop to Zoidbergs earnings. Hermes clearly disslikes the poor lobster.

In season 1 Hermes does economic cutbacks like the Saltwalter tank, and zoidberg quotes "It's a witchunt!". Or something like that.

Hermes also blames Zoidberg for "wasting a hole heap a' juice", "electricity", when it really is bender having an Electric-addiction.

So i think Hermes is the reason for Zoidberg beeing poor.

Why has nobody mentioned the large bet on himself in round 1 he placed in WMIBaCiL?

1. He may have had a large sum of Decapodian sheckels, or whatever it is that they use as currency, but that doesn't necessarily make him rich in the real world.

2. He was fairly confident of winning, and if he lost he'd be dead, so I doubt that he was worried about having to pay up.

3. Zoidberg's idea of a "large bet" might be considered chump change by most folks.

Take your pick.

Just saying, it's a bet he lost, thus he lost a large sum of money to Bender.

Assuming that Bender was able to collect on the bet.

And again, the large sum of money may not have actually been that much.

he gives his money to Bender, even if he won the fight, Bender would never pay him back, Zoidberg's just too damn stupid to have money, he buys stupid items (sometimes 8 at a time) and he's an awful negotiator (selling his shares for a sandwhich, which he even thought was ripping off the other guy)

Keep in mind that Zoidberg owned 50% of the stocks to the company. (Though traded them away for a sandwich with "that guy" ) in ep 321 i think. Future Stock.

So he had to have been rich.

He didn't buy them El-Luxo remember Hermes said that he gave them to Zoidberg for toilet paper because they were worthless?

Truth is Zoidberg was established as poor early in the series.  The reason he had luxury accomodations is as previously stated the three upper managment types got the good stuff and the crew got the fiesta deck

It's not like PE completely intended him to be penniless, they did set aside a retirement account for him, he's just to stupid to put any money in it

I thought the answer to be pretty clear, it seems you guys are looking too far into this:

the 3 main characters are stuck down there. Remember it was those 3 who asked the professor for a job and have always been segregated from the rest of the group.

Remember when they get fired all because leela forgets the keys in the ship and fry and bender take the ship out. Zoidberg is like now im the popular one; lets all talk to zoidberg!

Zoidberg is close to the professor but only in the sense of a pet.
And yes Zoidberg does make bad consumer choices but only half the time. Like the time he bought 8 of fry's holophone records (Like leela said "most people cant play the holophone" ) and since Fry lost his lvl 75 hands of the devil he pretty much went out buisness. That value of zoids record will sky rocket to the point where zoid is set for life, i think.
