In How Hermes requistion his groove back Morgan proctor promotes Fry and when he stands up and turns to bender Morgan says
*Mr Bender would you please hi 5 Fry*
why would a person with only 4 fingers call a hi 5 a hi 5.

Because a high four sounds stupid.

Also, hardly anyone would understand. The average audience would try to figure out the humor in calling a high five a "High Four", thinking it was supposed to be a joke.

Unlike the Simpsons, the characters on Futurama have never acknowledged that they have only four fingers on each hand.  In fact, I seem to recall hearing somewhere that Groening originally wanted the characters to have five fingers, to fit in with that whole "Futurama is real, The Simpsons is fiction" thing, but later decided against it for animation reasons.

Well, Futurama is seen as a fiction in the "real" world of the Simpsons.  Uter wore a Futurama t-shirt, and Bender is one of the tv characters Bart imagines when he goes through tv withdrawl.

it didn't seem to me like a great joke even with the phrase hi 5 but that's british humour for you

Morgan said something to the extent of "Mr. Bender, could you please high-five him so we can carry on?" She addresses Bender, so in this theory, it should be a high-three. It still doesn't change the fact that I don't give a shit.

Maybe the etymology is different. It could stem from an ancient ritual where five dollar bills were extravagantly passed from person to person.

Good call, jerkberg.

But if it isn't funny, what would be the point of putting it in a cartoon comedy? Comedy always take precedence over logic.
