video game music is getting better and better
I agree
PC games, Heroes of Might and Magic IV. Despite some people call this game crap, (I don't agree but this is for another thread)
concerning music, sometimes, while playing HMM IV, you cannot get where are you, are you playing a PC game or sitting at the concerto. Very-high-quality music.

also, just for everybody’s information, I don't like Satanism, neither do I say "fuck god".
I listen to listed by me bands because of mysticism (and protest) in their music and stuff and stuff and stuff, you all know what i'm speaking about.  ;)

i couldn't really find a better thread so i'm posting it here...

i saw north of america live twice last week (one time they were also supported by forstella ford, but they sucked). and dammit, they're really, really good. to me, they're the new hope for rock since at the drive-in split up.
they are just awesome musicians, they swap instruments on stage, the show just blew me away.
also, they're damn funny. they were constantly making stupid jokes even though they shouldn't really be joking at all since they're damn unlucky. unlucky incidents include: their van exploded while driving to hamburg. they lost parts of the drumkit, one guitar, almost all merch (thank god i could still get a t-shirt), their clothes, plane tickets and so on.
but they actually kept joking about this - and they kept touring despite the fact that they had virtually no clothes with them (and they had to buy, quoting them, "crappy t-shirts at wal-mart" ).
then they produced a video and wanted to send it over to germany since the german record label has rather good connections to mtv/viva. the first time, the video never arrived, the second time the video got scanned and thus lost all content. that's why their video will never be aired over here in europe.
on the second show i saw them, the contact lenses of one of the guitar players/drummers/singer (like i said, they swap instruments) shifted, but he had to play two more songs untill he could get them out of his eye. so he had to play these two songs with a hurting eye. and after that, he could hardly see anything.
not to mention the several wrenched guitar strings, the drumkit that fell apart during one show (got fixed with duct tape though), the guitar that fell down because the strap broke (got fixed with duct tape too).
also, there were about 60-80 people at both shows, which is pretty bad for a band coming over here from canada.

yet, they never complained and had lots of fun. and they were really nice after the show (i had the opportunity to talk with to one of them).
some quotes include:
one guy (the one who complained about his crappy white wal-mart t-shirt) was so sweaty you could see his nipples - after some standard-jokes about the fact, they asked for a song they should play and i requested fuck (repeating). who would've thought that some lines can easily be replaced by "i can see mike's nipples". it had me in stitches.
or how about the following conversation:
north of america: "do you want hear any other songs?"
drunken punk: "play back stabbath!"
north of america: "we already played that song."
drunken punk: "play it again!"
north of america: "no. we're not right said fred."

How the hell did I miss The Sinner Kid's ridiculous aggression teen-angst fueled baseless diatribe?

Funny how he came back into the worst band thread and dissed Beastie Boys and Backstreet Boys just because Fred Durst hates them. I've got news kid, Fred Durst is a twat. Anyone who dresses like him is also a twat.

And Drowning Pool suck.

Repeated use of the finger smiley does not make your point any better. Now go jump off a cliff.

Might as well list my favorites, in no particular order:

Dream Theater, Queensryche, Spock's Beard, Transatlantic, Camel, Genesis, Yes, Toto, Dire Straits, Marillion, Pink Floyd, Supertramp, Electric Light Orchestra, Alan Parsons Project, Whitesnake, Magnum, A.C.T., Pain of Salvation and that's about all I can remember.

Next question: how many of those bands have you actually heard of  ;)

@ Lurrr: Cool. Classic progressive rock.

*the world explodes because I just made a contradiction*

On a completely unrelated note, but has anyone read any reviews of Marilyn Manson's Golden Age of the Grotesque? Being a Manson fan, I'm eager to pick it up, but the first single is extremely underwhelming. I read in article about it in "Revolver" before it came out, and Manson described all his influences, including Salvidor Dali, Dadaism, Surrealist painters, and the like, so, naturally, that piqued my curiousity. (However, when a musician describes *painters* as his influences, it does cause head-scratching) And he ripped off Faith No More, which is a no-no.

Or, did anyone buy it, and is it any good?

I quite liked "mOBSCENE", even though it IS a blatent rip of "B.E.A.G.G.R.E.S.S.I.V.E." by Faith No More.

I haven't got the album yet, but being a completist (and having got the rest), I'll probably buy it.

Speaking of which, I just picked up "Angeldust" after having most of the Mp3's on my computer. It's some good stuff.

I, also, tend to be a completist, aside from "Smells Like Children," which is just super weak. The cover of the Eurthymics is good, and "I Put a Spell on You" is decent, but the rest is pretty medicore. And when did Manson start doing all these cover songs? He did the two previously mentioned, "Rock n Roll Nigger," and "Tainted Love."

I like all kinds of music, so it's hard to pin-point any particular genre that I'm partial to. Some days I'm in the classical kind of mood, so I'll listen to to opera and classical music. Other times I'll be in the mood for some booty shaking club/dance music. Lately, though, after my recent trip to Australia, I've been really into music with digeridoo, and for some unknown reason, that traditional Japanese music that is entirely comprised of those large drums.

Bumping this thread with a couple of discussion points I had with some mates on a long car journey:

1) A person from a band dies and you're brought in to replace them.  Who would it be, and why?  Regardless of lack of musical talent.

Abe Cunningham from Deftones sadly dies and I'm brought in to replace him, as he's most like my style of drumming, and I think I'd fit in that band well.  Plus, they rock!

2) If you could make a Festival Of your own choosing, who would you book, regardless of time and mortality?

MelllFest
Main Stage:
Led Zeppelin/Pink Floyd (co-headliners)
Metallica
Faith No More
Foo Fighters
Deftones
System Of A Down
Queens Of The Stone Age

2nd Stage:
Rammstein
Rocket From The Crypt
At The Drive-In
Fugazi
A
Black Box Recorder
Red:Shift (it's a fantasy festival, my bands gotta play!)

Comedy Tent:
Bill Hicks
Tenacious D (thanks Spiff)
David Baddiel & Rob Newman
Bill Bailey
Simon Pegg

That'd be a pretty damn good festival.

i dunno. i'ld like to replace somebody at at the drive-in or north of america (either on bass or drums, in the case of north of america both as i have to change anyway). i guess i'ld prefer north of america as they're funny guys whereas from what i've heard especially cedric and omar are rather complicated persons...

Shameless plug time.
HyperSimon
Listen; you (probably) won't be disappointed.

My bands:
Sister Hazel, Dave Matthews Band (older albums), Matchbox 20, Disturbed, Oasis, Enya, Bright Eyes (more on that in a minute), The Get Up Kids (one particular song: "Mass Pike" ), Bruce Springsteen, Lifehouse, Jason Mraz, (some) Linkin Park, (some) Our Lady Peace, Stone Temple Pilots.
And I'll get killed, but, they have good songs: Michelle Branch and Vanessa Carlton

Bright Eyes: There is just one song that has the best lyrics I have ever heard. They're not musically talented. At all. Musically they suck. But from "Loose Leaves":

Quote
But I remember counting days down 'till the year could be done
So I could scatter all my notebooks on the prep school lawn
And disappear again into a summer's bliss of stayin' out and sleepin' in and gettin' drunk with my friends
But that's gone and I know that won't ever come back
I accept I won't cling to what I had in the past
But life's a slippery slope, regret's the steepest hill
Hope for the best, plan for the worst, and maybe wind up somewhere in the middle.

I love those lyrics!

Interesting idea, Melll. It has to be bands that are still in existance, or can we include defunct bands?

Answer: Yes.

Hmm....the cuts on this are going to be brutal..

evan'sfest (a festival of the night)

Main Stage
David Bowie (headliner)
Nine Inch Nails (headliner)
Marilyn Manson
Faith No More
The Misfits
White Zombie

Second Stage
The Smashing Pumpkins
Joy Divison/New Order
Depeche Mode
The Deftones
Sisters of Mercy
Echo and the Bunnymen
Rammstein

I tried to thematize it, because an open-ended question would be too impossible. How could you cut Dylan for Nirvana, the Stone for Led Zep? It's be insane.

I like what you did with it though.  I left the question as open-ended as possible to get the muso-heads thinking.

It's an interesting point though, how would you choose between Dylan & Nirvana, or The Beatles & Hendrix.  The answer is, you can't so either you go with the best line-up possible or make it a themed event.

Great to see Bowie, MM, DM and FNM on there.

After hearing my mum playing Coldplay constantly, I now seem to love or hate most of 'A Rush of Blood to the Head'. I just love the track 'Daylight', that's by far my fave on the album. If only they released that as a single. 'God Put A Smile on Your Face' is also clool, but then there are other tracks I hate, like 'The Scientist'...

Coldplay started something good with "Parachutes" but "A Rsuh of Blood to the Head" is too smooth. All the little goodiebits have been smoothed out and the result is just a pleasant listening experience, nothing more (although some songs do stand out)

Have I posted a band list? I think not (in no particular order):

Mew - Placebo - Lise Westzynthius - Metallica - The Mars Volta - Kira and The Kindred Spirits - A Perfect Circle - Sigur Rós - The Vandals - NoFX - Tool - System of A Down - Cradle of Filth - Queens of The Stone Age - 30 Seconds to Mars - KLoAK - Mudvayne - Alexanderband - Depeche Mode - HIM - At The Drive-In - Eels - Led Zeppelin - The Doors - Primus - Kashmir - Muse - Hateshpere - Foo Fighters - As I Lay Dying - Alanis Morissette - Entombed - The Cardigans - Portishead - Opeth - Morbid Angel - Nirvana - Pennywise - The Cure - Jeff Buckley - The Offspring - Faith No More - Blur - Superheroes - The Ramones - Nine Inch Nails - Air - Psyched Up Janis - Dillinger Escape Plan - They Might Be Giants - Blind Melon - Dream Theater - Glassjaw - Group X - Moon Gringo - Moi Caprice - Beth Gibbons - Luksus - Voodoo Glowskulls - Marilyn Manson (And The Spooky Kids) - Barcode - Weezer - Janis Joplin - Joni Mitchell - Konkhra - Orgy - Under Byen - David Bowie - Mikael Simpson - Queen - Aerosmith - Poison The Well - Kitty Wu - Joy Division - Jimmy Eat World - Stonesour - Nina Simone - In Extremo - Cat Power - Entombed - Babylon Zoo - PJ Harvey - Dizzy Mizz Lizzy - Björk - Pink Floyd - Beck - Crytopsy - Ella Fitzgerald - Dido <believe it or not- I am sick of the radio singles from "White Flag" though) - The White Stripes - Rancid - AFI - Zeke - Kittie - The Distillers
