My taste in music isn't too good, but it's better than some people's I know. Some are huge fans of Will Young, Gareth Gates, Busted, Blue and the like. I'm not keen on any of them.
The list:
Travis
U2
The Beatles
Simple Minds
Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark (OMD)
Red Hot Chilli Peppers
Röyskopp
The Lightning Seeds
Manic Street Preachers
Frankie Goes To Hollywood

Also, I'm a big fan of 60's and 80's music   :) Anything before the late 90s!

Edit: Also I forgot to mention Queen and The Clash  :D

Wish I could list a bunch of obscure bands here, but I can't. I like mostly mainstream stuff.

I love Aerosmith, Therapy?, the Stones (obviously), Fiona Apple, Dido, Tori Amos, Ween, Aimee Mann, U2, Tracy Bonham, The Clash, the Commitments (yes, a band as well as a film), Sex Pistols, Robert Johnson, The Mamas and the Papas, Joan Jett, Of Montreal, Nina Simone, Etta James, Bikini Kill, Billie Holliday, Eminem, James Brown, Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Nirvana, the Pixies, Pink Floyd. . . and others. I love soul, Motown, blues and rock.

i also urge a lot of people to listen to Igor Stravinsky. The firebird captures movements perfectly in sound. like a bird moving it's feathers, a kiss, a swordfight.
the Rite Of Spring is a masterpeice that many other composers have tried to capture the originality of.

Drowning Pool has the honor of being the absolute worst band I ever saw live. They were on OzzFest 2k2 (right before P.O.D., who scheduled that back-to-back?). Let me just say...they sucked. Big time. Like half the crowd went to get nachos and go to the bathroom during their bit. Some of the remaining crowd was heckling them (for two horrible covers, NIN's "Head Like a Hole" and Metallica's "Creeping Death." )

They were bad. Really really bad.

Well, my favourite band absolutely has to be Faith No More for the quality and diversity of the music they did.
Other worthy mentions are Incubus, RHCP, Puddle of Mudd, Nirvana (back in the days), Foo Fighters, Pink, Limp Bizkit, SOAD, Metallica (classic, of course), Eminem, Tenacious D, and so on. All fab bands, whether you think they've 'sold out' or not, I don't think that's important. It's good if it sounds good. End of story. To hell with the rest!

No, that was the year before. Ironically, the same city that heckled Drowing Pool (Cleveland, OH, where I'm from) also heckled Crazy Town. Apparently, the heckling was so bad, the lead singer started crying and stormed off stage. If only I was there...  :evillaugh:

Heh, reminds me of a time a lead singer came after me after the gig (really small gig) because I had a laser pointer fixed onto his guitar and it obviously put him off, when I saw him come down near where I was and heard him say "Where's the fucker with the laser!", I was sprinting across the field giggling.  :D

You know I love you for loving FNM.

I also would add that list to mine, except Pink.

I agree with you also.  What defines a "Sell-Out" band?  Is it one that goes double-massive?  No.  Is it one that betrays it's roots in order to shift more product?  Maybe.  But why?  They are only "selling-out" if they betray themselves and their own musical direction in order to sell more product.

If the music's good, who cares if it's been bought by 20 people or 20 million.

Let's continue this in another thread. You pick the time and place.

And I'm in agreement with Melllllll. If the band doesn't betray their beliefs and message by watering down their message and lyrics to make money... they're not selling out. Even if a band happens to be raging angrily for a while, and then alter their music because they'd like to be heard by more people and make more money, is that such a bad thing? Sometimes people would just like to play music and be heard and enjoyed. nd making lots of money isn't so bad either.

Yup, only if their "inspiration" comes from Mr. John Q. Recordexec then that can be defined as selling-out.

There's a quote from Jason Newsted which goes:
Quote
"Yeah, we've sold-out.......every damn seat in the house, every night."

A lot of bands would give everything to reach the kind of audiences that the likes of Metallica reach - remember they ploughed a lone furrow in the 80's, ignored by radio and MTV, but they had legions of hardcore fans.  Who carried them to being the enormo-dome super-band they are today.

They didn't get lucky, they worked their asses off, same goes for the likes of U2.

I personally hate the term "sell-out", as I think it only applies to a small percentage of artists (Okay, if I see "For Whom The Bell Tolls" being used to advertise woman's sanitary products - only then will I agree).

To get this back to music, and not the music-business - I have a list of my five favourite bands (which never changes):

Faith No More, Metallica, Pink Floyd, Rush and Depeche Mode.

There are much more under these, but these are laminated, I'll always love these bands.

What he said. Also, I'm still experimenting with the different genres. This month's flavour is down-tempo music. (i.e Zero 7, Kid Loco, etc)

I just had a week away - purely by accident the only CD I took was Dark Side Of The Moon (Pink Floyd, if you didn't know), and remembered what a great album it was - if you don't have it, go and buy it!

And then, as soon as they got big with the Black Album, changed their sound to a more radio-friendly style, started to suck, abandoned their old school fans, and went to war with Napster, driving off most of their remaining fans.

Metallica might be a sell-out, but they definately have sucked for the last few years.

Oh, and I think I mentioned this before, but Eminem is totally a sell-out. He went from a dangerous, edgy, and perversely comical talented rapper rapping about murder, mayhem, and the emasculation of the male to singing about how he loves his daughter and that he's sorry about how he treated his mother. Crap.

Well, I for one, hope that the new album is gonna be great.  I'll admit that Load and Reload didn't grab me as much as they should have (in my opinion it was overkill, they should have made ONE album with all of the best songs from the TWO albums - there's a lot of "filler" on Load and Reload.), and the Napster thing pissed me off.

However, my point remains, good or bad, they worked hard for what they got, it wasn't anyone elses decision but theirs to alter their sound. I think personally it was down to the success of the Black Album that afforded them this luxury.

They placed too much importance on the blues-metal slower tempo songs like "Sad But True",  and especially "Nothing Else Matters" in choosing the direction to take after "Black".

Oh, and I've been listening since "...Puppets".  Which is still their best album.

Money sucks when it controlls you and you must become a servant to it. There's a difference between doing what you love and making money for it and changing what you do to make more money from it. That's "selling-out."

And my problem with Metallica is that their recent stuff has sucked balls in comparision. Not only to older Metallica, but to other metal bands. You can't even put "Reload" in the same league as "...And Justice For All."

First of all, don't put words in my mouth Cappy.  You edited my post to make it appear I wrote "grr argh, I'm angry"  Just for the record. I did not write that you did.

Second,  YOU started this whole how could you in your right mind put down something so good and pure as Christianity thing.  I just wrote I'm currently listening to Satanic bands, and gave a few examples of band names.  I originally said nothing about the content until you brought it up.

Thirdly, I'm not going to argue about Idol worship with you.

Put words in your mouth? It was a way of abbreviating the quote while showing I wasn't losing my sense of humor over your rant. Nobody here actually thinks you broke off in mid-sentence and wrote "grr arg I'm angry".

And it would seem to me that YOU started it with "to me there is nothing more evil than organized religion or elevating man above the other animals", in response to an innocent question of what variety of "satanistic" your music is.

And one more time - you want to continue it, then take it to something more fitting, like the Test thread.

And just to add some music-related thoughts... It seems to me that video game music is getting better and better. Perhaps someday soon people will hear a track they really like, and not be astounded when you tell them "That's from a video game". Example of an excellent song from a video game: The Best is Yet to Come, from Metal Gear Solid. Sung in Gaelic, so don't attempt to understand the words.
