unfortunately a good friend of PEEL recently past away. Many of us think that Davierocks should be POTM for april for us to remember him by and that we should wave the usual voting out of respect. so vote for what you think we should do.

I say we still have the nomination thread, but every nomination to be Davie. At least that way it'll feel like a real win and not just being handed the POTM award.

This is a bit to soon. But i am all for this idea. He never got a POTM in in life. The least we can do is give him one in death...

POTM was designed for Poster Of The Month and should stay that way.  If there is is conclusive proof, like a newspaper report, which there should be at some stage when something like this happens, then the other thread is testiment enough to the guy's popularity.

Without wanting to sound insensitive (but realising that it's almost impossible), I don't necessarily agree that he should be made POTM for taking his own life.

Maybe a (honorary) PEELie would be more appropriate?

Well I mean, he was a pretty damned good poster anyways, I think we can all agree on that. But now he won't have the chance to claim the title, so we might as well give it to him now because it's inevitable that he would have eventually received it anyways.

Without meaning any disrespect, I'm not sure he'd want to be patronised with a token POTM award. Besides, it's too soon.

I think a postumos POTM is a great idea.  It may only be a token, but it's the the best we've got to offer, other than keeping his memory alive.

Both Guy and Paul have good points- I move we give Davie CyberKnight's very special PEELie... but I will support the POTM.

I think we should have the normal POTM, but be allowed to nominate him.
Also, that PEELie sounds good.

Sigh...

I guess this is the ultimate example of why I hate the POTM game.

If it turns out that this was an elaborate hoax engineered by davierocks, then that would be worth a POTM award.  If not, the guy missed out on the the last 75% of April.

Of course, chances are this post will be ignored like most of my other posts.

Who are you again?  :p

Anyway, without sounding insensitive, I know POTM is the ultimate popularity contest, but I don't think comitting suidcide is a good reason to make someone POTM. I think hHis testimonial thread and Jon's site is a far better way of doing it.

I agree with Guy that I don't think he'd want an honourary PotM anyway, and I think there are people here who feel somewhat iffy about giving an award to someone who felt the need to take their own life, myself included. In short no, but if people want to give nominate him April PotM then so be it.

I'm against it, personally. Had he been killed in a manner other than by his own hand, it might be different, but the fact is that he killed himself. Not exactly something I'd deem worthy of winning an award, no matter how good a poster he was.

On the other hand, I would support a kind of "in memoriam" PEELie award in this coming year.

I don't think it is a good idea. If at the end of the month enough people decide that due to the quality of his posts while he was here at PEEL he deserves it then that is different, we all know it is rarely just given for posts in a particular month

Sadly, depression can make the most selfless people act in apparently selfish ways. I know people have different views on this, but if Davie had clinical depression I believe his condition was responsible for his death, not the man himself. Looking at it that way, I can’t see any harm in a posthumous POTM. But it would have more meaning if everyone voted for him in the poll...

Seriously speaking, I agree with LAN. I'd support the Peelie, but people shouldn't win awards for things like this.

I agree with aslate.  This is way too soon to make this kind of discussion.

And I agree with Guy.  It's just incredibly false to give him a fake POTM for what he did.  Not that he wasn't a great guy, but this might be a little excessive.

Without meaning any disrespect, my POTM nominations and votes are based on posts and posts alone. Giving him an honourary one is a nice idea, with the right intentions, but it's not the right way to honour him. Give him something he earned.

He, uh... he nominated me for PotM last month.  I was thinking of nominating him this month before all this went down.  He only had a few nominations the last couple months, but he would have won PotM sometime soon.  He was a quality poster.  So I think giving him an honorary PotM isn't just giving him an award for killing himself.  It's the same principle behind giving someone an honorary degree, say.  He would have earned it if he'd had the chance.

That being said, I dunno if it's the thing to do.  Time will tell, I guess.

If I died, I'd rather be awarded something I fully deserved than something I didn't really. I'd just think, "My life was such a failure, they can't even honour me with something I deserved. I just get a pity award I didn't really win." Go with the PEELie. That has meaning.
