I voted for the person who is not me, both because she deserves it and because voting for yourself is kinda tacky.

My only regret with voting for Gorky is that I can only vote once.

Well, you won. That makes you a winner. But you voted for the person who didn't which makes you a loser. These two cancel each other out, so overall you are neither a winner nor a loser in a sense. In another sense (a more real one), you won and should be congratulated. Or congorkulated. Or whatever feels appropriate. Enjoy the taste of victory. It turns out that it doesn't taste like motor oil.

Or congorkulated.
Is that a legal conjugation?

As far as I know, conjugulation with Gorky is legal so long as you have her consent. Which you should probably ask for in advance. Whether or not she'll consent to being conjugulated depends greatly on what the hell that means, and whether or not it's preferable to simply being congorkulated on a gork well gorked.

I command you to elect Motor Oil as May PotM.
Not only does she have to earn it, she has to earn it hard, and earn it consistently throughout May. I mean, I think that she has, but I won't be voting for her because you command it. It'll be because she earned it. Which is also why everybody else should be voting for her in May (unless somebody else does something truly spectacular this week). Cast your votes in the right place for the right reasons, PEEL. Otherwise they mean nothing. Well. They still count, obviously. But you don't get to feel that sense of righteous satisfaction (and if you feel it anyway, you don't deserve to and should feel shame for doing so).

There is a special place in Hell reserved for people like that.
I differ... basically, there is nothing wrong with a self vote, based on the assumption that one honestly considers his/her own posts the best ones. Otherwise, a vote for other candidates -against one's own honest assessment, for the mere reason of being publically polite- seriously opposes that principle Cast your votes in the right place for the right reasons, PEEL. Otherwise they mean nothing. Well. They still count, obviously. But you don't get to feel that sense of righteous satisfaction (and if you feel it anyway, you don't deserve to and should feel shame for doing so).
Of course, that self vote HAS to be based on an honest view, and not "trying to gather some points". To give a practical example: Imagine you and Stum ending up in a TIE in POTM (a surreal scenario, for sure, but let's just let it slide for a second). Now, I take it as pretty given your posts will be the more valueable ones quality wise. And I REALLY hope you'd come to the same conclusion. I am pretty sure you are that realistic and honest NOT to give out a mere politeness vote on a "it just has to be someone else but me" basis. In fact, if you'd honestly consider doing so, I'd probably board a plane, fly to UK, and give you a slap behind your ears Now, I was using a rather surreal situation for the sake of making an example, and I certainly will not compare Gorky nor MotorOil to Stum. Yet, my -admittedly a tad nitpicky- point does remain: In certain, rare, constellations, a self vote might be the most honest and logical choice.

You're too practical, Hein In a multi-way poll, I can't see voting for myself. In a tie runoff poll, if I thought myself the better candidate I would simply abstain (and have done so). But keep in mind that I'll be turning 128 in a couple of weeks, and I admittedly harbour some very antiquated views on the matter

I honestly just don't take POTM all that seriously. If I have a clear opinion of who I think should win for a certain month (and I usually do), I'll vote for them. But in the case that I don't have any overwhelming opinion, I might just vote for myself for shits and giggles. I'm not saying I vote for myself often, but it's happened. I haven't done it hoping to win, especially since most people win by more than one vote, so I don't expect my vote to really make much difference. I mean, if I did vote for myself and ended up just barely winning, I'd probably feel a bit silly and admit to it. But really, it's not a big morality issue for me, it's just an internet forum popularity contest. I understand why some people take it more seriously and put more thought into who they vote for, but to me it's not really a big deal. I'm not so insecure that I think ever voting for myself is nothing but despicably egotistical. Besides, by admitting this I've basically assured nobody will vote for me ever again, as they picture myself checking the box next to my own name every time they go to the poll. Also, I'm not pointing fingers at any specific person (there are a few who do this I can think of right away), but the whole telling other people not to vote for or nominate you thing (whether for POTM or PEELies or whatever) is getting a bit old, I think. One can only be so self-deprecating before it seems to become an act. If we didn't know someone was kind and humble, we wouldn't have accepted them as a beloved member of this board, so they don't have to constantly remind everyone of their low self-esteem, even if it's only in jest (which I'm aware it almost always is). Nobody's going to crucify anybody for not appearing as utterly selfless as possible. I mean, I used to be the most self-deprecating person in the whole world, but I think I realized it started to come off more grating than endearing at a certain point. Of course, this is an extremely minor nitpick...people who self-deprecate or denounce self-glorification aren't infuriating or anything, let alone a problem. This is mostly just an observation that moderation in those things is probably best. In any case, congrats Gorky! You deserved it. And Motor Oil, I predict you'll be winning soon enough, so stick around.

I honestly just don't take POTM all that seriously. You mean you're not emotionally invested in a meaningless popularity contest that takes place on an unimportant corner of the internet? Heretic! Burn him!

About time someone wished her stay to be a pleasant one, because I think Gorky's stay has sucked so far.
