Personally, I think that my thread titles are the best. Still, I guess I can't please everybody all of the time, and when it comes to pleasing people, there's only one person it's important to please.

Me.

I'm tired of people talking in code.  If you have something to say, just say it.

Maybe you should try this?

I've had a long past week at work and I still have to work another 3 days before I get my first day off in over a week.  I come on here to see I am nomed for Biggest Attention Whore, Spammist Peeler, and Most Annoying (the only 3 negative awards)....The only positive award I am nomed for is new member.  But let's face it, beloved Nutmeg will win that.  I don't take too kind to negative compliments at all...I have always tried to be nice and basically neutral in my actions.  But not right now...I'm tired of tip-toeing around what you believe "I should know" or how "I should act" or what "I should like".  This was one of the reasons for not stating my gender...you all got annoyed, and I dropped the subject completely, even when you made new comments on the topic because I didn't want to annoy.  If PEEL was a real place, I'd take a Molotov cocktail and burn the thing down.

Ever hear of over-reactions?  This is one!

FHM, we don't want to be against you, and you compared to Nutmeg isn't really fair because you signed up in September and Nutmeg in February, so we don't have as much posts of yours as of Nutmeg to make a 1:1-statement. And don't take these PEELie-Awards for too real/personal, it's internet-fun and decides nothing about your real-life person.

You do realize that this is a forum that began about a television show who was influenced heavily by this "boring" franchise right? Or did you think "Where No Fan Has Gone Before" was a stupid title too?

This is the internet. Get over yourself. I'm sorry you had a rough week, but you should be ranting about it in the rant thread, not taking it out on spectacular science fiction writing. Sheesh.

See if we has stuck to the simple headdesk it wouldn't have needed to get like that :/ Word of advice: when people take jabs at me, I either embrace it or somehow make it at their expense :D Lightens the tension and such. Also, flipping out with negative awards is the sort of thing that got you on those polls in the first place. If I flipped out every time I got some attention I didn't like I'd be on there a lot. Look at the recent penis incident. Everything I said was twisted into somehow choking on booze's German sausage. I could have reacted badly, but anything I did was a joke. You've just insulted half the population of PEEL in one fell swoop along with demanding that people stop talking in code.

You were also rude to Xanfor. That's not allowed. :shifty:

I was the good kind of noob and I've also been hanging around on IRC for as long as I've been on PEEL - many people know me a lot better because of this.

As someone who hates real-life interactions due to people being suck-faces, I have to agree with FHM in that people here act really shitly to people they barely know, and expect them to somehow not get offended, when in fact everyone has their own way of interpreting things so unless a new person is somehow in on all the in-jokes (seriously, why would anybody who isn't already a part of PEEL want to read a whole wikipedia about a society they aren't yet involved in, and how many years would you have to sit on your butt to read up on every single post?) so it does feel rather intimidating. I feel intimidated coming back here when I have had to have an absence for whatever raisin, and I've been here over 4 years now.

But otherwise, once you realise some people are just jerks, you come to love those jerks, and so PEEL lives. :)

Yeah, I guess I can see the point on why somebody would be upset winning negative awards.... that's personally why I never did them.... except those Anti-PEELies.... and I think I got banned for that......

But anyways.  You're on a message board about Futurama, a science fiction cartoon show that draw heavily from Star Trek... and after somebody points out to you why one of the nominated things up there is relevant, you make a comment about thinking Star Trek is dumb.  Listen... I mean, not everybody here loves Star Trek, but even the people that don't love Star Trek and are here, probably respect Star Trek for what it was.

By the way... none of us expects you to act any specific way.  There are norms in this community, but if you didn't know about them then somebody will probably point them out.  And to be fair, we all probably argue about what those norms are: like how it's illegal to nominate people for PotM who have already won and everyone is going to get banned.  And if some people here don't like you, or if you don't like some people we all have the ability to ignore each other.  That is.... until you break the rules... which are not set in stone; however, anybody who can punish you for misdeeds is pretty reasonable here, and will probably give you multiple warnings before taking drastic action.  I should know... I've been banned plenty of times, and I totally deserved it.

Although we shouldn't expect new members to read an entire wiki... which is disjointed and contains loads of misinformation, as well as, inaccurate portrayals of many things, we should expect them to know the rules.

Pfft, I never read the rules. :O_o: A lot of it is logical. But this is the only forum I've been on where it feels like nobody really wants to accept anybody new unless they somehow prove themselves worthy by magically knowing how everyone thinks. It's a strange sensation, because I feel it myself and then have to ignore that feeling because I do remember a time when an internet forum felt more like a secret hideout from the outside world, rather than a secret hideout from the rest of the internet.

Maz, what's the point of this story?
I like stories.

So yeah..thread titles. They're always fun. I voted without knowing there were specific titles we were voting for, because at that point I was on my phone internet and didn't see the second post until I scrolled a whole phone-page down. Doesn't matter, they're all pretty neat. :)

I love accepting new people just because.  But I prefer irc... although, I am random and do start attacking people for no reason... it is random though.

I've always been of the perception that people in this community are more willing to accept random people until they give reason to not be accepted... and as you said... most of this stuff is fairly logical.  I mean.. this place seems to attract rather logical people... many of whom actually have difficulty interacting in social situations.

We all perceive things in our own ways. I, of course, never really bother to read every single post if I've missed a lot, and as such tend to miss out on the part where someone new does something that's really worth what they seem to get. I've never been all that good at gaining understanding from skimming...

If I got upset everytime a certain PEELie mod here made a joke at my expense I would be flipping out almost every day. And I've been here ten years. It's how this place runs.

I think this place is pretty accepting of people in general. If someone wants everyone else to recognize that every post of their is glorious, this is not the forum for you. They have many forums like that available on the web, but they have less than ten active users and maybe 100 total registered members. I don't think a simple "facepalm" issue is crossing the line; when we're not allowed to use it it leads to this. That is the beauty of the image. It can say what you want without having to be mean about it.

No one has really attacked FHM too I'd like to point out, which to me through anything would be unacceptable. An innocent scifi franchise has been, though, which is detestable.

When I was younger I thought everyone was out to get me...then I realize maybe, just maybe, I wasn't as great as I once thought I was. :p

I feel I should post this here just to tie everything up (so I don't have to send PMs to everyone).

I know what I said was an over-reaction and I really don't hate Star Trek.  I was just getting upset that people were getting upset with me for not agreeing that thread title was great.  Growing up, all I ever saw was Star Wars (on TV) so I was never really exposed to Trek.  Therefore, I didn't get the thread reference.  I asked people what it meant (before) and all I ever got was a, "well, you should already know" or facepalm, "you suck", etc.  I got upset enough that I stated I thought that thread title sucked and I hated Star Trek.
And then there was the nominations for the negative awards.  I know I should take these things more in stride and I really am working on that.  But for a lot of my life, I was always the one picked last, unpopular, striving for other's approval.  And many of my childhood friends I did make just dumped me to the curb when I was no longer useful for them.  I'm not asking to be pitied or always praised...I guess I just want to be accepted as one of the group (and the more I talk to people, the more I think I am).  I know some acceptance comes in the form of ridicule (ie if you didn't like me at all, I would be treated like Super Hans...completely ignored), but with the way things have been going in my life the past week, it just got too much and I lashed out.  Also, it's hard to tell people's inflection in what they are saying online.  I have learned to judge people's faces and voice tone to gauge if they are trying to be mean or are "just giving me a hard time" in fun.  Can't see that on the internet!  Growing up where I have been exposed to much passive-aggressive behavior, if I can't immediately tell someone is "just kidding", I immediately take it they are trying to be mean.  I know that is something I have to work on and get better at.  And I will try my best to do so.  Just knowing people cared enough to respond the way they did and not attack my response means a lot to me.
Thanks for reading.

~FHM

And if I win one of the "negative" awards, well that is fine.  I would have won an award! :p

That was very heartfelt FHM. I (and I hope the rest) appreciate the time and effort it took you to write that. :)

I think you'll find many of us here share that kinda background. My closest friends did exactly what yours did, they ditched me once it wasn't beneficial and then only contacted me to pump me for info to take back to their Queen Bee.

If you're serious about staying here then I welcome that. I don't want you to think that we don't want you here. I think most of us got rough starts but we pushed through them. Look at Nibbs! :D

As a sidenote, you know I'm a Trek fan but I didn't even get the title at first either! I think someone explained it in that particular thread and then I was like Fry: Oh, Ohhh!!! I grew up on Star Wars too and disliked Trek because I thought it was lame, but really it was my appreciation for Futurama that made me wanna start watching the Trek. This is why, if the opportunity arises, I HIGHLY suggest watching them (I'll probably get debated for recommending The Original Series first before The Next Generation but that's how I did it and it worked out for me :p). After a few episodes I think you'll be as hooked as I was, and once you are more familiar with it it will open a whole nother level of humor in Futurama you never even knew existed. Example: Why Must I Be a Crustacean in Love was always funny to me, but after viewing Amok Time for the first time and then watching that episode, wow, I couldn't stop laughing it was so great! :laff:

Anyways, that's my two cents. I don't claim to be good at giving advice, I'm just telling you what I know and hopefully that helps. Thanks for reading as well. :)

By the way, the Queen Bee needs more info so that we can start producing honey... so umm... you ready to get pumped again? :p

Also.... Enterprise is the best series. :shifty:

Also... I still don't get the thread title to be completely honest.  Working towards everybody's approval is fine and dandy... but in reality there's only one person's who approval who actually matters at the end of the day: it's me you, because that's the person that knows the most about you and has to face up to you every moment of every day.  This is a pretty good community though, and it has some decent people in it whose opinions are worthwhile; at least to me.  Most of the people here aren't total dicks... so if they respond to you in a seemingly negative manner, there's usually a decentish reason.  That's not true for everyone you'll come across here, but that's a pretty good reflection on life as well....  most people aren't dicks.

For a more specific analysis of why you perceive that people are perceiving you in a specific fashion, the reasons are a few.  The gender thing for example.... apparently some people immediately thought you were a girl and treated you as such, and some people didn't think that... and it seemed to some people that you were using that lack of information to your advantage.  To be fair, that's happened to me with at least one PEELer... and now I know that person's gender and I could care less one way or the other.  For the record, I don't feel that I treat him any differently than I would if his gender had stayed the way it seemed at first; but it's nice to know the truth.  I personally won't bring this up again.... because to be honest, if you want to be gender neutral, and that's who you are then I'm going to have to accept that that's your stance on the matter if I'm to interact with you on any level.  Feeling that you're being ignored and what not is well.... Well you're probably not being ignored nearly as much as you think you are.  I'm sure everybody doesn't respond to every post they read, and I've talked to quite a few people about this specific thing... we want to feel that we've been acknowledged and that the things we say are valuable.... but to be honest, not everything we say is valuable information, and certainly not to everybody else.  I mean... it'd be grand if everybody responded to every single thing I said on PEEL and if they didn't they'd be banned from PEEL for life.... but that's just not realistic, and I've grown close enough to enough people here that I get enough feedback on my ramblings and trollery... and sometimes valuable input.  Lastly, from my perspective, you've grown a knack for complaining about the dire social situation you're in with us.  For example, you post in PotM a decent amount about how you want to win, but nobody has nominated you.  That's a completely natural reaction... I want to win awards too.... but that's not the best way to get them; actually it's closer to the worst way.  I'm pretty sure I've already told you this before... but.... the time I won POTM, I was banned.... so I could even see any of the results or what not.  What I probably didn't tell you is that I felt the exact same way when we started doing POTM.... I WANTED TO WIN THAT SHIT BECAUSE I AM THE FUCKING BEST AND EVERYBODY SHOULD ACKNOWLEDGE EVERYTHING THAT I DO EVER.  But that wasn't going to happen... and it didn't.... and then people started nominating me... and then I felt like an attention whore, and then I sent my army of fake accounts to vote in every potm competition to make somebody else win who wasn't me.... because let's face it, I got nominated enough to get on the polls, and according to POTM tradition you couldn't be nominated again if you won.... and then I got banned and most of my fake account army deleted... and then I won.... Really makes you think, right?  I mean let's be honest.... POTM is a popularity contest now.... and so are the PEELies... but we try to be fair with these things and acknowledge as many of our fellow PEELers as possible, so it's not like DrThunder is going to win 80% of every award every month and every year.... although he certainly should... seriously, if I could distill his blood, I WOULD.  but umm... yeah...... something or other.... banging seven gram rocks I guess.
