It seems like PEEL is running into a lot of problems lately, and it seems like there's always a problem involing this extremely out-dated UBB system.

it uses resources and bandwidth, many things dont work right, it's search feature is out dated and doesnt work sometimes (and now we can't edit posts, and we had problems with 'last post by')

I say we start using a new system, that has added features with less bandwidth usage.

We could subscribe to threads, ignore users, and have a lot more options for moderators (such as temp ban with timers)

With any new system, I'm sure marc could make a style that easily resembles the way PEEL looks now.  It might look a little different, but we'd get used to it.

I asked marc about this already, and he said even if he did want to change board systems, he couldn't, because the host doesnt have mysql in the package he has, and it would cost more to have it enabled... though, I can't image it's that much more, and people on peel are already paying the bills of the board anyway (mostly).

Anyway, I just figured I'd see what you all think.

If mArc said it can't happen, it can't happen. Why start a thread about it if you already know the answer? Yeah, this UBB setup IS extremely outdated, but it's better than nothing.

I don't know why I made the thread... I just figured we could discuss it to see what happens.

How much bandwidth can a board like this really use?  It's not eBay for cryinoutloud.  Sounds like the costs are rising and the service is dwindling.  Maybe time to look into an
alternative.

It has nothing to do with bandwidth. It's CPU and I/O load. I'll have to see about what to do, but I'm not going to change board software just for the heck of it. mySQL would be a hell of a lot more expensive with this hoster and moving hosts would mean a good while of downtime.

Regarding features: I don't want an ignore feature. Neither a member rating one nor many of the other things that were added to boards in the last few years. The basic slick idea of what a message board should do was completed a long time ago and since people started adding new features just to have more than the next one. I'm not going there.

The current situation with some errors here and there is due to me tweaking things. I'll get them out as I go along, but at the moment, the whole CPU-load thing (which is partly due to us being more active than ever) has priority as it's "fix or no more".

I doubt that some Posters would like that.
I like PEEL the way it is now, there is no need to change it.

I'm not one of these people who thinks that they always know better, so I'll go along with whatever Marc thinks, as he knows best, it's his board.

I would certainly re-register if that was called for, but at the moment, it isn't.

I think it is best to keep this board, there are few problems with it, sure it is occasionally slow but not very often.

If the board got replaced I'd join PEEL Mk2, but I can see people that only post once or twice a week, or less, not bothering.

I get by okay on this system. As long as it doesn't collapse then I'm fine. Especially if getting a new one is costly, time consuming, awkward and above all, largely unneccassary, then I see no reason in changing just now.  :)

I'm not certain on this, so correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't this ancient CGI-based system suck a hell of a lot more power out of the server than it should? As far as I know, PHP-based systems are significantly more efficient. It would be cost-effective.
Also, the Internet is littered with cheap [PHP/MySQL-offering] webhosts. But yeah, moving = downtime + taking more time out of the admin's life than it should. So I don't blame you for sticking with this rusty piece of antiquated code. It does work, after all.

I like this PEEL. It doesn't have problems except when members abuse it and overload it, so if we behave ourselves it should be OK. Anyway, Marc does all the shitwork of maintaining this place, so I'm happy to go along with what he suggests.

PEEL can be hard to wrestle occasionally, but most of the time it runs smoothly (like now). I'm for staying with this system, it feels "cosy".

You know, like a pair of old, wornout shoes. Sure, the string is broken and there's a tiny hole in the front, but they're comfortable and you wouldn't trade them for the world.

Can the old threads even be converted to the new system? I would hate to lose those threads in General Discussion, HR, Fanart, etc. Those threads are full of information, and are part of Futurama history.

Anyway, whatever mArc decides I'll back.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it. If it starts spitting fire and booting users out, then it's time to change. But it's fine for now.

Yeah that's true.  But also, the titles of the threads don't always have anything to do with the body of the thread, so it doesn't come up in the search. For eg, it might be about...Nibbler's involvement in bringing Fry to the Future, but it might be named "bite my shiny metal ass" or something.

I'm sure it is better, but that's not saying much. Why go with an expensive board like UBB, though? There are excellent free boards out there. (Yes, I AM a phpBB advocate.)
*sigh*... Won't happen, though. The one thing I hate the MOST about people is that they're afraid of change.

Um... you are aware of hundreds of various themes being available, right? Including some pretty blue ones, I'm sure.
Also, another thing I've been meaning to mention - a move wouldn't necesserily mean we lose all the posts and accounts, and start from scratch. There are tools available to convert these things into a different board's format.

No i am most certainly not. I know nothing of anything .When you say Php i am asuming you are referring to the standard phpbb. Im not really impressed by that particular search function either.

I want the message to be displayed along with the post. That way you dont have to search through all the pages to find it.

phpBB is very moddable. Possibly the most moddable (and the most modded) board around, since it's free and it's very well coded. Just check out www.phpbbhacks.com  . If you want a particular feature, chances are, someone already made it available. That's basicly why I love it.
