Are you using Photoshop, Hil? In that case just make sure that you make your scan in a seperate layer and then hide the background layer so the background of your scan becomes transparent (it looks checkered). Then do the usual resizing down to 64x64 and select File->Save for Web.. (or press Ctrl+Alt+Shift+S in Windows). This will give the following screen: Make sure the setting is set to "GIF 128 No Dither" or "GIF 64 No Dither" (first arrow). By clicking on "Matte" (second arrow) you choose for which background colour to optimize your avy. I usually use a light grey (#EEEEEE) to make the avy work with both the white and grey background on PEEL. Check that the file size is OK (green ellipse, it should be less than 3.5K) and click "Save".

OK, I scanned it. Then I deleted the background layer. But the background is not transparent. It has the same background as the original layer. I went on the top toolbar, and went to window, to 'layers' and got a window that displayed the current scanned layer and the checkered thingy as the other layer. There's a icon with an eye that is "indicates layer visibility". i clicked it and part of my scan, just Fry's head, showed up on the checkered background. I have a feeling I'm doing this totally wrong. Also I opened up that window, and everything aggreed with what you said, Mercapto, except it is still not transparent. I mean, in your example, you have the checkered background but in mine the original layer's background shows.
Wait...I may have almost figured it out...except on the checkered background the outline is not black, it's grayish. but it's almost time for me to go to sleep, so I don't think i'll get to it tonight.

Looking good Hil, [nitpicker]but could you get the whole thing in the tiny space? Fry's Arm and Leela's hair look a bit out of place[/nitpicker] But besides that, it looks great, and if you want a grey background to try it on... There you go, keep it up EDIT : If you really want to nitpick it, go over the edges and try to get rid of that white border stuff... i had the same problem... and still do a bit... but anyway its only a tiny problem

Sure - however, there's a few problems with the picture, the first being it's very blurred. Because GIF files can't store translucent information (ie, it's transparant, or it's not), blurry pictures can be very hard to get right. Assuming you're using PSP (it's similar for Photoshop), you need to click "options" on the save as dialog after you've selected to save as a GIF. Then click "run optimizer", and you'll be able to select the colours you wish to make transparant - like this: If you sharpen the image up a bit, you get this: But all new avys should be facing the post, and so you should flip it around, to get this:

Gleno: Drippy_Taco does the uploading, and he'll upload them all (if he finds them acceptable) don't worry about not being uploaded. Plus that thread is where he will look for avatars.

It's in your profile, you can pick from a list. However, if you want to have a "custom avatar" (for example a non-futurama one) simply find the Avatar Thread in Off-Topic, and post what you'd like to have as your avatar with the words "upload to custom". Like so: Upload To CustomThen you have to wait for it to be uploaded, and you need to be patient.
