Kind of. My window is a bit different, but in that HTML window it says # FFFFFF.  So does the window for the background color. I tried and I didn't get past reduce to 256 colors. I did't get a window, I assume it wil be, where I can set it as transparent.  Oh well, I'll play around a bit.

Are you using Photoshop, Hil?

In that case just make sure that you make your scan in a seperate layer and then hide the background layer so the background of your scan becomes transparent (it looks checkered).

Then do the usual resizing down to 64x64 and select File->Save for Web.. (or press Ctrl+Alt+Shift+S in Windows).

This will give the following screen:

Make sure the setting is set to "GIF 128 No Dither" or "GIF 64 No Dither" (first arrow). By clicking on "Matte" (second arrow) you choose for which background colour to optimize your avy. I usually use a light grey (#EEEEEE) to make the avy work with both the white and grey background on PEEL.

Check that the file size is OK (green ellipse, it should be less than 3.5K) and click "Save".

OK, I scanned it. Then I deleted the background layer. But the background is not transparent. It has the same background as the original layer.  I went on the top toolbar, and went to window, to 'layers' and got a window that displayed the current scanned layer and the checkered thingy as the other layer. There's a icon with an eye that is "indicates layer visibility". i clicked it and part of my scan, just Fry's head, showed up on the checkered background. I have a feeling I'm doing this totally wrong.  Also I opened up that window, and everything aggreed with what you said, Mercapto, except it is still not transparent. I mean, in your example, you have the checkered background but in mine the original layer's background shows.

Wait...I may have almost figured it out...except on the checkered background the outline is not black, it's grayish. but it's almost time for me to go to sleep, so I don't think i'll get to it tonight.

Apparently you only drew Fry's head on the correct layer. Make sure that the new, transparent layer is the selected layer when you scan (there's a little paint brush next to the eye icon).

Yeah, I figured it out. The one problem is, so far, that on the transparent layer the outlines are too light, not black, more greyish.

Check the opacity of your paint tool. Make sure it's set to 100% and/or select a harder brush.

Looks very good to me  :) The only real thing is the absence of a body...I think it could look a bit better with that. But yeah, looks nice, certainly fine (IMO) for the pool.

Looking good Hil, [nitpicker]but could you get the whole thing in the tiny space? Fry's Arm and Leela's hair look a bit out of place[/nitpicker]

But besides that, it looks great, and if you want a grey background to try it on...

There you go, keep it up

EDIT : If you really want to nitpick it, go over the edges and try to get rid of that white border stuff... i had the same problem... and still do a bit... but anyway its only a tiny problem

Yes...You're using PSP (I seem to remember). I generally draw my avys against a coloured background. So, I need to make them transparant using the advanced GIF options. Simply set the transparent colour, and then tell PSP to also make transparent similar colours (I'd tell you what this is called, but my PC is down, so I can't check). Voila! No white border  :)

The way i make them transparent is:
I normally scan the image blown-up to a very high size
Fill the background with a light-grey, between the PEEL grey and white
Shrik and make the grey transparent
Nice borderless images.

*Sigh* I hate to bring this up, but I can't seem to use my custom avy... I searched for how to go about doing it, and i ended up under the impression that you go to your profile and change your avy as normal, except switch to the one called "Custom". Yet Custom seems to not exist... Sorry about this, but i did do a half-assed search and they all said the same thing.
Thanks a bundle in advance.

Sure - however, there's a few problems with the picture, the first being it's very blurred. Because GIF files can't store translucent information (ie, it's transparant, or it's not), blurry pictures can be very hard to get right.

Assuming you're using PSP (it's similar for Photoshop), you need to click "options" on the save as dialog after you've selected to save as a GIF. Then click "run optimizer", and you'll be able to select the colours you wish to make transparant - like this:

If you sharpen the image up a bit, you get this:

But all new avys should be facing the post, and so you should flip it around, to get this:

It's in your profile, you can pick from a list.

However, if you want to have a "custom avatar" (for example a non-futurama one) simply find the Avatar Thread in Off-Topic, and post what you'd like to have as your avatar with the words "upload to custom".  Like so:

Upload To Custom

Then you have to wait for it to be uploaded, and you need to be patient.

Suggestion - although I guess this would be impossible to achieve, it would be cool to have a custom avy facility similar to the sig facility (ie, you upload it yourself)...it might lead to more spontaneous avys (for example, Haloween specific customs), but then again it might lead to many "illegal" avys coming in...so maybe not. Just a thought...

Yea, that had been thought of, but the possibility of illegal avatars over-ruled it.

It would be good, but also the possibility of illegal avys is probably too high.Unless, for example, when you upload sigs it'll stop you from uploading illegal sigs-that tit won't work if you upload illegal avys. I've seen this on other boards, but I have no knowledge of that whatsoever or if it could be done.
