Note to self: Never ask for a framegrab from someone who makes avatars.

Good job, Teral. That's a pretty clean avy.

Oops, sorry. I didn't see your post El Zilcho. Just saw Canned Eggs asking for an avatar, and then thought: hey, a crate is only straight lines, I can do that.

Next time I'll post a framegrab.  :)

Post it in the avatar thread in "Off-topic" and be sure to label it "Upload to costum!"

Drippy_taco will then upload it sometime soon. Once it's uploaded you go to your profile and select "costum avatar" and presto you're a box of canned eggs.

Ok, cool.  Is this going to take a long time? I ask because RandomEngy is mad at me for stealing Truman.  People on the Avatar thread are talking about emailing avatars to Drippy.  Is that faster, or just more annoying for Drippy?

Also, do you want your prize?  If you want my turn on the trivia challenge you can have it.

Don't know how long it'll take. Drippy is the only one who know.

Mailing them isn't any faster, both kinds of avatars (emailed and thread-posted) gets uploaded at the same time. More annoying? Probably not, just redundant.

Nah, you answered the question, it's your go.

This post is about avatars but unrelated to its immediate predecessors.  It's a feature request.

Let's say you've washed your dog and vacuumed your cat, and you're still sitting around burning up with energy and nothing to do  :)

How about displaying usage counts on the pool avatars?  I tried to pick one that I liked but hadn't seen a lot, and short of grovelling over the entire board, it can't be done.  Knowing how popular an avatar is would help.

Regards,
Dave

If you want, you can just request a custom avatar here, and myself or another avatar maker will make it for you. Then, as aslate said, you can say "Upload to custom" and no one else will be able to use your avatar.

Thanks for the offer, El Zilcho.  Having joined very recently, I'm sensitive to issues a newbie faces.  Picking an avatar was one of the hardest, hence my request.  Someday, I will ask for a custom avvy; then it will no longer be an issue for me.  But it will still be one for the next new member.

You make a good point, (and you sound like a business man), but usually if you pick an avy that someone else picked, they'll point it out. Also I'm not sure if mArc can even add that feature to the message board.

Me, a businessman?    :puke:
I'm an engineer, though.

I know it would take some work.  That's why I set the priority at "wash your dog first".

Avatar Rules:

Avy must be 64 x 64 pixels.
It cannot be animated.
The background should be transparent.

If you want to have a custom avy (i.e. non-Futurama), go to this thread, post the pic, and say upload to custom. Gottit?

Also, there's a maximum size of 3.4 KB and as a general rule the avatar has to be faced towards the post.

The best way is to trace over the original picture in Photoshop or Paint Shop, and color it in (a.k.a. scanning). I'm too lazy to look, but I think there's a tutorial on CGEF.

EDIT: If the original pic looks clean enough, you could just crop the edges off in Paint or something. But if it looks like crap you'll never live it down.

Ah, El Zilcho you lazy bum, you.  :p

The article from CGEF can be found here. It's designed for Illustrator, but you can use the same basic technique in Photoshop and Paint Shop Pro.

The Fry Hole also has a tutorial for Paint Shop Pro here. The first tutorial uses bezier curves for tracing while the latter one use a free-hand approach. I prefer bezier curves, but for avatars it doesn't matter much which method you use.

Nice to see you found the site, but we're meant to be down for fixing, updating and moving servers so don't be surprised by 404s, un-updated pages and other weird crap.

But I'm retarded! What are bezier curves, and how can I get them in Photoshop 7?
