I've just been thinking, since we can upload our own siggies on the Edit Profile page, is there any way to enable us to upload our own avatars?  Then everybody wouldn't have to e-mail mArc or bug him with questions like "Where's my new avatar?"

To sum up the forthcoming answer from [-mArc-]:

It would leave too much room for errors and pains-in-the-asses, and possibly security risks.

mArc did send me that e-mail about my avatar the same time he did with you Fred, only a fault I can guess with my e-mail system meant that I didn't actually receive it until this morning...

I do think the system now is probably the best in terms along what Drippy said.  :)

The present system spots people uploading any picture they want. People should just be a bit patient waiting for their new one to be added, it is only a picture after all, it doesn't effect ones post.

And it does automatically add to all your old posts once it is uploaded. Despite being an avatar-for-life kinda gal, I must throw myself behind the current system.

I don't really want an avatar upload as I want to have some more control over what people are using there. Unlike the signatures, the avatars give PEEL some sort of look at feel.

I wouldn't mind my own, but maybe we can just submit avatars to do with futurama to marc and if he likes em he can put them up?

You mean, exactly the way it's done at the moment?

Anywho, I agree with the overall consensus. Allowing people to upload their own avatar will be a mess. Some is bound to abuse it. I'm not saying it will be any of the current members, but someone will. And soon  we'll have animated avatars, obscene gestures etc. The current system works nicely, just have a bit of patience.

I remember, I used to pay flying visits to many Operation Flashpoint forums - I have yet to join one but it's amazing what hints, tips, solutions and other stuff you can just pick up by looking through. Anyway, at one of these forums people can pick their avatars and sigs from where ever, and someone came along with a nazi swastika as an avatar. He made a thread "Do You Find My Avvy Offensive?" - I mean he wasn't deliberately trying to provocate or offend anybody (bloody stupid way to do it though) - and he was flamed to a sinder. This way is much better, I wouldn't say the board would suddenly fill up with things like Nazi symbols or anything if it was free-to-choose/upload, but it completely prevents that sort of flame war I described from ever happening.

Like when Fred's avvy was uploaded. It was originally my work and I was worried that it might offend people - I mean it is a lewd pic in someways - but TheVoices said "if mArc thought it would be too offensive, he wouldn't have uploaded it." - so that's why I think that this current system is best, probably in any circumstance.

I think admins can edit a guys profile and make the avatar what ever they want. I remember someone (can't quite remember where or who) posted an image of another forum where there was an ongoing war of admins and one had turned the other into a Brittney nut - changed his profile, changed his sig, changed his avatar. The admins do have the power to do what ever they want to a guys profile, but within reason. Editting a guys profile usually is a very last resort. Usually someone can be "persuaded" to change their ways, but if they refuse to change their avatar/sig/whatever that is offending people, ie they refuse to stop offending others, then the admin will probably more likely kick the offender first since he probably isn't that much of a nice guy to keep anyway. With this system it avoids that situation before it starts.  :)
