Nah, that's the same way I do it.  I only ever check "Unread posts" and "New replies" after I've already done that, just to see if I've missed anything.  I usually haven't.

When I click the "Mark all messages as read" link by mistake, it's usually because I was aiming for the "Personal Messages" link to check if I have any new personal messages.  Nope.  Still just that one from KurtPikachu from 2011.

Wow, this whole conversation makes me wonder if my method of browsing PEEL--just indiscriminately clicking on those sub-forums and threads that are showing new posts, all willy-nilly--is somehow flawed.

Yes. You're bad, and you should feel bad:

  • Click the "Unread posts since last visit" link.*
  • Watch the list of links to unread posts populate the page.
  • Middle-click each link in the list, top-to-bottom.
  • Watch each middle-clicked link open its own new tab.
  • F5 to reload the page, showing any new posts since you clicked the links.
  • Middle-click any new links which show up, F5, repeat as necessary.
  • CTRL-TAB to the first one.
  • Read new posts on the page.
  • Close the page you're reading, using your fave method (CTRL-W, ALT-F4, hunt for and click the little "X", or my fave: middle-click the tab to close it.

Using this method, all the tabs are loading in the background while you're still reading the first one. Ergo, NO WAITING for the next link to load before you read it! Easy. Peasy. Clearly superior.

*I actually middle-click the unread posts link, creating the lists of posts in an adjacent tab, saving the main page for hitting F5 to reload on occasion.

Ah, that may very well be a valid PEEL-perusing technique, but it assumes the majority of my browsing is done on a laptop, when in fact I’m almost always on my phone like the obnoxious millennial I am. :p

The 'chat' link in the top button bar (in-between 'profile' and 'logout') doesn't appear to function.. should the button be removed?

Much of New PEEL doesn't really work at the moment. We still don't even have a "post" button! I blame Steve Jobs.

It would be kind of hilarious to have the 'chat' link point to a Futurama chatbot. All the dialog is already in fairly-well-formatted text (I'm thinking of the morbotron site). Something to put on the to-do list..

Well, to be pedantic we do have a post button, it's just not labeled at the moment.

I know jack-all about coding for webservers, but if there's some way that I can help by adding missing labels when I have time here and there, and it's not more effort to teach me than it would be to do the work directly, I'm willing to assist. Sign me up.

If it's still an SMF package, then it's written in PHP, but there are admin editing pages where you label various variables without knowing how to code.  How I know this is beyond me, since my secret avatar editing page was different from my invisible admin editing page, which I certainly didn't secretly have for secret for real, this is definitely the truth for reals this time, super cereal, I promise for reals.

Does anyone know which one of the unlabeled buttons is the "show signature" button?  I suppose that it's not really that important, but it would be nice to be able to tell people how to speak and what to drive again.

It's the last one, on the lower left.

Or maybe not, I have admin view?  I just tried to cheat by inspecting the element in the browser, looking for "check_sig".

Can we please get spoiler tags fixed? Sometimes I want to discuss spoilery stuff but I also don't want to be a jerk who ruins something for someone, so I end up not posting anything at all.

As the triumphant carpet bomber of Eden-7 once said, "A thought occurs!"

ROT13 encoding is made for this problem. It's a substitution encoding where you use the letter of the alphabet that's 13 chars ahead of the original one (wrapping around the end of the alphabet). So,
A=N
B=O
C=P
...
N=A
O=B
P=C

etc

Thus,
Fancr xvyyrq qhzoyrqber.

Just make sure not to double-ROT13 :)

This (https://rot13.com/) will do the translation, but a zillion other sites do the same (or you can just roll your own in Excel or something to fill free time).

Also.. I'm not the first to mention it here :)

If you really want to post spoilers, you can still use the spoiler tags.  It won't show up in your post, but people can see it by quoting your post.  You just have to tell people that there's a hidden spoiler in your post.

It's a bit of a pain, but it's still easier than Zapp's solution.

ROT13 isn't too bad, it's a couple extra clicks and a copypaste, but that's it.

One thing that would be fun to see would be something that used the alienese alphabet .You could have it so that it converts your spoilery text into a image with the phrase written out in alienese, and when someone else clicks on the image it turns into normal Latin chars.

Just an ideal thought. A man can dream, a man can dream...

It's not a bad idea, but what do I look like, a guy who's not lazy?

I can't even be bothered to use the method that I suggested in my previous post.  I generally deal with the lack of functional spoiler tags the same way that Url does: I don't post anything at all.  Either that, or I just post unmarked spoilers, but no one wants to see that.

Welp, one can imagine a renewed interest in Futurama following the Hulu announcement, so I better get to work on ironing out all the problems you've mentioned.  I have decided to actually schedule time for maintenance of the site, so I can really put myself up for disappointment!

Here's a small thing I just encountered: I believe it used to be possible to quote a post from the reply screen—like, each post in the "Topic Summary" section would have its own QUOTE button you could click to transfer it, formatted all pretty, to your text box—but that QUOTE button appears to be no more. It's such a minor issue that it may not even be worth addressing (and obviously you can still quote a post by copy-pasting it and putting it in the [quote = username] tag, it just won't be hyperlinked) but I figured I'd mention it anyway. I know you're a busy mallard, Svip, so please feel free to ignore this very tiny gripe!

Might be stating the obvious here, apologies if so: There is still a ‘quote’ button in the top right of each post’s textbox which works as expected - after clicking, it opens up the reply page with the whole post’s text quote-formatted.

Nothing visible if the ‘reply’ button is clicked directly though.

Oh, totally—that feature still works perfectly. I just have a memory of that same QUOTE button appearing on every post under the Topic Summary, for those instances when you only realize you want/need to quote a post after the fact.

It doesn't do that when I click on it.  Instead, it puts the post's quote-formatted text into the quick reply box, which I then cut, click reply, and paste into the reply page.

Right, that's an important clarification: the quoted text goes to the Quick Reply box, not the full reply screen (though, hot tip, you can then just hit the "Preview" button on the Quick Reply box to take you to the reply screen and save you the trouble of copy-pasting).

I never noticed that the quick reply box had a preview button.  Has that always been there, or was it added when Svip updated the site?

It was always there.

My original plan was to both maintain The Infosphere and PEEL this weekend.  I thought the wiki was going to be a quick job, but it turned it to a bit of a slog.  So only The Infosphere got through the mill this weekend, but I am scheduling PEEL for next weekend.

We noticed yesterday that PEEL wasn't rendering as expected, and wouldn't accept an SSL connection. Did someone accidentally bring up an old copy somewhere, on a different server?

A quirk I've noticed, is that sometimes - usually when a service is restarted - PEEL will revert to an earlier settings file, and I have to manually tweak it back to normal.  The first few times it happened, I worried about a larger intrusion, but since nothing else besides was touched, I figured it was a strange quirk of SMF.  I have yet to figure out what is happening (and I know it's nothing dangerous), but since I know what to do when I see it, I've been putting it off for now.

A search of all files in the server for a telltale string present in the earlier settings file seems in order. Could be some obscure default that's calling some deprecated version of the settings.

Got a nice surprise tonight. I was searching for a member's profile and for fun clicked some of the untagged links, in the hope that the feature to look up a person's last posts might be functioning again, and belatedly noticed the new code added to the profile pages!

Thanks, Svip!
