I read on the TV Tome Futurama website that they're now forced to mute out more than just the Zombie Jesus stuff. Has anyone heard anything about this? Does this mean that they'll be muting out words like Ass and bastard which are frequently spoken by Bender? I really hope not or I may just quit watching it on TV and stick with DVD's because that will really be too much.

From that link, it sounds like it was just one person taking offence to Jesus being referred to as a Great Zombie!lol. I doubt that there will be much more censorship....

On the commentaries don't they often mention that they have had to get rid of offensive stuff because of censorship problems? I may be wrong.

Who cares about Great Zombie Jesus?!? Its not like one of the characters is saying in a satanic voice "YOU MUST HATE JESUS, BURN YOUR FRIENDS HOUSES DOWN IN THE NAME OF SATAN"

Oh yea, I wondered if anyone else caught this last night on Adult Swim, it was "Bender Gets Maede" and the professor used that saying, but it only said "...Holy Zomby _____" *mouth moved and no words!!*

I hope there's no new censorship.  I have all the episodes on tape/dvd anyway, but I don't want censored versions to have to be the only tv versions.

And if that mother doesn't want her kid to hear "sacreligious" stuff, she doesn't have to let him/her watch the show.  Goddamnit, this is cable.  She has absolutely no right telling Cartoon Network what they can and cannot air, especcially late at night where her precious child shouldn't be watching tv anyway.

Yeah, but that's stuff they got rid of in the animatic stages and whatnot. This thread's about stuff they take out after it airs on TV.

Censoring Futurama is bullcrap, it aired on Fox and now it's on a cable channel, where they should be able to get away with more. Futurama is the cleanest show on [Adult Swim]. Family Guy has far more Jesus jokes ("He must've been wasted 24/7" "I'll turn this water... into funk!), dirty jokes, and bad language. They've gotten away with saying shit a few times, and they kind of said
fucking in a recent episode of Aqua Teen Hunger Force. So if there is anything to complain about in [Adult Swim], it is not Futurama.

Your missing the point.  They want all "fitlth" off the air.  It's not compared to, but whats getting complained about.  If I complain about Futurrama, they dont say well look at this show, they say OK, we will cut down on this.  They dont take other shows into consideration when they censor one show.

I don't get what's all that offensive about the line anyway. According to the Bible, Jesus died and came back to life, so he is pretty similar to a zombie. All of my Christian friends think it's one of the funniest lines ever, and a couple of them are uber-Christians.

I did not miss the point. Why would they censor one show and leave everything else uncensored? It makes no sense. Plus, kids shouldn't be watching TV at 10:00/11:00. It sounds like a mother who saw this and instead of putting thier kid to bed at a reasonable time, decided to complain and punish everyone but the kid. If I caught my kid watching TV I considered inappropriate for him, I'd yell at him and make him turn the TV off, instead of yelling at a network that has every right to air what it airs.

I don't see what the big deal is. Jesus apparently came back from the dead. That's pretty great. It also makes him, by definition, a zombie. "Great Zombie Jesus" is a perfect description of the greatest street magician who ever lived.

I still don't see what everyone is getting so worked up about.  CN cut one word from two episodes in the entire 72 episode run of Futurama.  What's the big deal?  I mean, it's not like watching Tenchi Muyo! on CN with the characters wearing digital paint "swimsuits" and referring to sake as "tea".

Oh, and considering what was censored in FLCL, I'm glad that CN censored it.  I don't need to see that.

Well I assume you're referring to them blocking out nudity and so forth (as I don't watch Tenchi).  But that's different, both in the presumed severity, and the fact that its earlier in the day.  It makes some sense to have some censoring during the day when kids are watching.  But Futurama is on late on night, on a block named ADULT Swim, and comes with a bunch of warnings even.  If that parent can't unplug a television set when their kid goes to bed, they have no right to complain.

found this on something called TV Tim:

Q. I was watching Futurama on the Cartoon Network, and they edited out the Professor saying "Sweet Zombie Jesus!" Why did they do that? -C.F.

A. "That was a decision of our Standards & Practices group," according to a publicist for the Cartoon Network. "Turner Broadcasting voluntarily employs much stricter Standards & Practices than even the broadcast networks. Any negative slang involving the word 'Jesus' will not pass their review."

But zombie might be seen as a positive, right? Maybe Jesus would be better off as a zombie.

But that still doesn't explain why they didn't do it to family guy. They should either censor all of it or none of it, otherwhise it's just pointless.

Dont forget about our bible beating republican in office, and our wonderful FCC leader Colon Powell's son, Micheal Powell.  If you make any jokes on the Bush admin, or Jesus ( a difference?) your getting slapped on the rist.  Comedy Central had a nice show that got pulled of the air (because of Mike Powell) call "Thats My Bush"  With lower ratings and pressure from the FCC it was pulled off.  Dont worry, censorship will be abolished one day.

The FCC has nothing to do with cable. Cable channels censor themselves so that they don't sacrifice ad sponsorships.

This sort of thing happens all the time, I was looking through the buttons at Hot Topic and found one of Brian where he was supposed to be holding a martini and they had changed it to a coffee mug. They said it was because they could not promote alcohol but later I found a poster in which he was drinking. I think censors are still harder on animated shows than say...reality shows because idiot parents say,"Oh! a cartoon!" and plop Jr. in front of it, not taking into account its late air time. Well, this is why we buy DVDs

Dude, the censors are evil flamethrower-toting bastards who want to take the entertainment out of entertainment. If the call a zombie Jesus offensive than they must have no sense of humor at all, or are mega bible-thumpers. (Those two statements can be synonymous) And believe me, I know bible-thumpers. I live in Georgia.  :D

I remember seeing The Deep South on TV, and the hilarious "Harpoon my ass" line was altered, leaving "Harpoon my eh-heh-heh," which made the ensuing ass-harpooning far less funny.

On a side-note: The pilot was shown a few weeks ago oover in the good old UK, and the guy we see getting into the travel-tube said "JFK Junior Airport." Wasn't that changed originally? I've lent out my DVDs of Season 1, so I can't check myself, but why would they re-change the line?

Yes, "JFK Jr Airport" is the original line, but it was change to "Radio City Mutant Hall" when JFK Jr was killed in a plane accident only months before the premiere. On the SP3K commentary David Cohen say it was done out of respect for family, or something (I forget the exact line at the moment).

JFK Jr died a few months after the premiere, which is why the line was originally there.  I wish they'd restored it for the DVDs, but it is in the animatic.

Why can't they say JFK Jr. Airport just because the Guy died? That's really stupid, I've never ever heard that line and if I did, I don't remember hearing it since back in 1999 I just watched the show and didn't "watch" it like I do now, paying close attention to detail...
