I believe the idea for the celebrity heads came from one of the episodes from The Simpsons where Bart becomes famous by saying "I didn't do it." He has a nightmare or something where he ends up in Hollywood Squares with Spike Lee, Whoopi Goldberg, and some lady in those celebrity head containers from Futurama.

It was said on an early S1 commentary (SP3K, I think) that the head-in-a-jar thing was a commen Sci-fi cliche... but I don't remember seeing anywhere besides that Simpsons episode, myself.  Unless brains count... then I've seen it lots of places.

I seem to be a commentary-referencing fool tonight...

I don't remember any comment about celebrity heads being a common sci-fi cliché in the commentaries. Are you sure?
