Simple question - which episode should have been Futurama's finale?

Devil's Hands of course, the staff picked the right episode for the finale.  A musical may have been a little out of character for Futurama, but it was fit for a finale.  Also, I found the end better fitting than the ending at the Why of Fry.

The last two episodes were perfect picks. Tying up so many little loose ends, as well as bringing closure to major plot points. And musicals are fun!
Also, I believe that this topic was done many times, so I wouldn't be surprised if it gets closed soon.

As a matter of fact it hasn't, at least not in this form.  It's come up in discussion in a couple of other threads, but it's never actually been the topic of a thread.

And don't talk to me like I'm a nOOb, I've been here twice as long as you have.

Anarchist: You stated the obvious truth. Imagine shutting down with TWOF- no no nooo. It explains, but doesn't finish anything. The only exception with TDHAIP is that I'd like Leela to get her human ears back. I'm not sure she has them in the end.

Devil's Hands, definitely. I still reckon TWOF is a crap episode by Futurama standards. I can't quite explain why, it just didn't seem... right.

Also, as Pikka Bird and Anarchist said, in terms of closure TDHAIP wins out.

I have to agree...

I think TDHAIP is like the best ending it leaves you wondering and wanting more.
I like it!

TDHAIP and TWOF are both episodes which I liked a great deal and they both dealt with key themes running throughout the four series. Overall TDHAIP was much more of a closer to me as the creators decided it to be, and the last line of the episode clearly shows this and is imo very effective.

The Devil's Hands are Idle Playthings was a good episode to end on  :)

Oops. With all the avatar-changing, I didn't see who you were. I got too used to seeing you with that Leela avatar. Sorry about that.

I'm pretty sure that her hearing loss was temporary. I believe that in her final shot, she wasn't even wearing Calculon's ears.

Well, I assume that the new comics, the game, and even the calendars take place after the series, but this couldn't be called definite proof.

Was it true that Fox wanted BSNBAOTV to be the finale?

By the way, my vote most obviously goes to "Devil's Hands", my favorite episode.  ;)

I suppose which episode you would prefer as the finale depends on what you liked best about Futurama. The shippers' will prefer Devil's Hands, while others may prefer Why of Fry for its denouement of the 'Fry getting frozen' story-arc.

Personally, I would have preferred Why of Fry as the series finale, but still find Devil's Hands to be an outstanding episode.

Did they have any reason, or are we to assume it was FOX logic?

Of all the lame excuses I've heard, that was by far actually credible.  Most nOObs seem to go for either this Fry avvy or an avvy of Zoidberg.

Normal service will be resumed on January 2nd.

Here's a framegrab from the last scene of Devil's Hands. Leela doesn't seem to be wearing Calculon's ears:

Please forgive the poor quality. I had to scale it to 400% original size.

Seems like I'm all alone here, but TWOF was one of my favorite episodes and I would have left Futurama feeling better if it ended with this episode instead of the devils hands ep. Sure the ending in TWOF wasn't totally dramatic and kleenex worthy, but imo it had a better feeling to it than the devils hands. The devil's hands ep. felt forced and just wasn't that great, imo.

TDHAIP is a good ending. They can't really start making more after that episode.

TWOF was a good episode. It'd be a good ending, but it wasn't as good as TDHAIP.

TDHAIP was written so that it could be a series finale, but could also leave room for the series to continue.  The Why of Fry seems to leave too much unresolved to be a series finale.

I dunno, IMO it's the other way around.  "The Why of Fry" seems to me to have a more conclusive ending than "The Devil's Hands..."

The good thing about the opera dress is it's pretty much impossible not to get a framegrab with a good cleavage shot.

Anyway, I think TDHAIP does a great job of giving us a sort of closure to the Leela/Fry thing, while at the same time stay ambigious enough for anything to happen.

TWOF realy doesn't do that, plus it leaves the Fry/Nibblonian plot wide open. "We will, oh we will!"
