In the episode "War is the H-word", Leela says to Zap that her name is Lee Lemon.

Do you think it could refer to Richard Brautigan's novel A Confederate General from Big Sur, where a caracter is named Lee Melon?

It think it's really cool, since Brautigan is one great american author.

I never thought of it that way... But now that I think about it... That would make perfect sense as why she used lemon instead of something like... Lee Longley.

I thought it was a misspelling of "Leela Man" ... "Lee LaMan" ... "Lee Lemon".

I wouldn't put it past Groening & co, to do such an obscure reference, and then disguising it as a regular pun-joke.

As David said in the audio-commentaries (bow to our superior product puny region 1 dwellers  :p), "everybody doesn't have to get each and every joke". Sometime they like to put in an obscure joke, and those who wont get the reference wouldn't notice, but those who get it will be all: "I can't believe they put that obscure, crazy joke in there, just for me!"

So yes, I think it could be a reference to this Melon (which is the elfish word for "friend", BTW) type.

There is a real person called Leila Lennon. Yes, she was related to John, but no, this has nothing to do with inspiration for WITHW, but I thought I'd say anyway, cos it does sound a cool coincidence.

And I once ate a lemon! That joke must have been a specific reference to me!

But seriously, if true, that's a classy reference if I've ever heard one.

Could've also been a Legion of Super-Heroes reference. There's an issue from the 60s where a character introduces himself as Legionaire Lemon. I wouldn't be surprised if at least one of the geeks on the Futurama writing staff read the issue.
