Nuh-uh, dude, you want the "Mary Jane Addiction & Groening" thread. It should be there right next to the "Is Matt Groening A Glue-Sniffer?" and "Huffing on The Simpsons" threads.

Ah, sweet, sweet booze. I have a glass of wine next to my keyboard right now... just hope I don't spillllllll&$^£()E)(HIU

(Plus I just ran a competition in my magazine that actually *is* a drinking contest... with full approval of the company that's giving away a grand's-worth of home cinema kit! Sup it up, guys!)

But being vagely on-topic... hasn't Barney actually sobered up now? Maybe enough of the Simpsons writers are in 12-step programmes to have them address the subject of alcoholism in some small way.

As for me, I'm not an alcoholic. Alcoholics go to meetings  ;)

Well, he was drunk in Sunday's episode... but he was playing Dionysus, Greek God of Wine, so he's excused.

Ah Dionysus, the life of the party. He was also god of wild behaviour, and had many affairs.

Greek mythology is pretty sick when you look at it. People marrying their sisters and mothers and fathers and such. And that Aphrodite really gets around...  ;)

Frued whould be proud of that question.
But I don't know of any open Q&A time for Matt G. in which to ask.
But why is drinking such an obvious topic in both series and smoking pot just implied?
Bender is the typical "frat boy" who never grew up.
And Homer (sometime after the first season) changed. He wasn't always drunk and stupid. There was always a leason that brought the family closer together. But now he's just drunk and stupid.
I think you may be slightly right.

I think Dabljuh has issues. Probably s/he or someone close to him/her had their life destroyed by alcoholism.

Maybe because it is a family show and daddy is legally alowed to drink but anyone smoking a little ganja IS EVIL AND SHOULD DIE, errrm, (the governments policies are effecting my mind). Dope is illegal so vague references are the only way to slip hash jokes past the Fox censors.
Canabis is being declasified to a class C drug in the UK (non-arrestable for possession), horray, about time someone took notice of the beneficial sides.

(WARNING: Big Gassy Lecture)

That's the risk you take watching "mature" or "dark" humor.

A poster I respect a lot more than some of you Earthling meatbags (kidding! well, maybe) had big issues with the "funeral" in A Pharoah To Remember, issues which might be perfectly justified by a personal experience, but which others might not relate to.

When I was younger (and far more mentally ill than I am today) I rushed out to see every slasher film that Hollywood crapped out of its feculent anus. Eventually, I stopped--not just because the endless variations and sequels were getting stupider by the millisecond, but because I was no longer finding horrific depictions of the violent, painful deaths of teenagers to be entertaining (for SOME reason). Nowadays, I can't even watch most TV crime dramas because the real stuff I read in the paper makes my stomach turn.

It's unfortunate that in our in-your-face, up-your-@$$, media-rich society, people run into "painful reminders" every time they look around...but it can't be helped without everyone getting all bunged-up and repressed.

You know, like certain members of the Priesthood.

I don't know if someone may have posted this already, but Groening once said he didn't think Bender should really be a bad role model, because technically, he isn't human. He is a bad influence on the robot children...
"Oh won't somebody please think of the robot children!!!"

wow.
I think Groening is making fun of drunks, and how society thinks its okay to drink alcohol in front of children. many many times we are shown what a terrible parent Homer is.
and Bender is, as many have typed before me, a robot.

PS I hate alcohol. I love weed, and prefer it to alcohol any day. But personal choice is important in a free society. Adults should be able to handle references to both, even if it may confuse tiny brains by being in cartoon form.
(if Sarge is reading this, time to put yer dukes up...again...if you remember...)

I'd skip the weed and tough it out with stupid reality. That's my preference.

Bender's only four years old - he is one of the robot children.

Futurama and the Simpsons are not actually written as children's shows - they are for more "mature" minds.  If the writers / Matt want to glorify booze, so what - the show is for adults who austensibly can understand and respond accordingly.

In many years of reading Groening's comic strip I've never gotten the impression that he suffers from alcoholism nor that there was any in his family.  He even did a public service announcement in his strip:

DON'T DRINK AND DRILL!

Compare this with the work of his close friend, Lynda Barry, and you'll see what I mean.

I just wanna say, as a former alcoholic myself, the jokes about alcohol abuse etc. are not at all insulting to me what so ever. and anyway scenes of alcoholic behaviour are everywhere and numerous things can bring up bad memories, and usually its relations' close-minded rants about how terrible the world is today and how can people abuse themselves like that. My guess is that Groening couldnt have been alcoholic because of the fact THAT he makes jokes about it.
