I have discovered the reason for Zoidburgs low self esteem AND poorness!  His lack of residence causes all of these problems...mabye even his incompetentance?  When Zoidburg got a house in "The Deep South" his self esteem improved.  He was assertive enough to ask a normally cruel and sadistic (In a loving way :P) Bender to help him move a couch.  The fact that he can even afford a couch proves that he is getting some sort of income.

Another possibility of Zoidburgs low self esteem, but not poorness is shown in the deep south and Cynogenic Woman (I think).  Fry is to blame!

1) When Fry and Bender are fired from the Planet Express Bisuness Zoidburg suddenly seems popular.

2) With Fry's far proximity to Zoidburg in the Deep South Zoidburg's condition seems to improve.

A third theory could be that he is homesick.  As shown in a cruestation in love Zoidburg is much for confidant when he reaches his home planet, although he is still hopeless.

Finally an interesting discussion!

Well, I don't think Fry is the key to Zoidbergs low self-esteem.
The reason why Zoidberg is popular when Bender, Fry and Leela are away is: Who's left? the Professor and Hermes. It would be a  little boring for the two of them just to talk to each other.

Why Zoidberg is popular in "Deep South" seems obvious to me. Water is his element, so finally he can be of some use for the crew. That's what makes him feel needed and that's why he is popular.

Hermes

Nevermind, not even our American friends are all able to write correctly.

Anyway: "Berg" is German for "mountain", "burg" is German for castle, so who cares?

You all know how much Hermes hates Zoidberg, right?
"You're paying for that!"
"Somebody round here has been wastin' a whole heap of juice. Probably...YOU!"
"It's eating my bait! Beat it, ya moochin' crawdad!"

There are tons of negative remarks that Hermes makes towards Dr. Zoidberg. And while we're talking about "The Deep South", let's not forget that Hermes suggested EATING him!!

Remember that scene at the beginning where everyone goes and registers to vote? The Professor registers with the NRA because they'll defend his right to own doomsday weapons? You don't remember that?

You're wrong - Zoidberg's problems are all caused by BENDER!

Let's look at the evidence....

Bender burns down Zoidberg's underwater house (quite how, we don't know - how do you burn something underwater!) - The Deep South

"Giant" Bender fights with "Giant" Zoidberg, calls him "Dr Jerkberg" - Anthology of Interest....

Um...

OK it was a crap argument. Sorry.
