Got my first look at "Simpso-rama", the big Simpsons/Futurama crossover episode that will air on FOX on Nov 9, and I'm thrilled to tell you the segments I saw are really, REALLY funny. As in, I had trouble looping my lines, because the material is so damn good. Man! Do we really have to say goodbye to these characters forever?

That's good to hear. Can't wait to see this ep, I really do have high hopes and expectations. I think if anything, Matt knows how big this crossover is and loves both shows too much to let it be total shit...

Futurama: The Simpsons crossover 'won't undermine series finale'

Quote from: Al Jean
"If you asked me, I'd say this crossover takes place three months before [the finale] occurred. I would never dream of trying to replace that ending."

Confirmed canon? :hmpf:

Confirmed canon if you accept the crossover as being canon (which you shouldn't). :p

Yeah, in no way I think Simpsons episode could be canon in Futurama, while it always can be set to correspond some point in Futurama's timeline.

David X. Cohen already said that the special would be showing events that probably occurred in the time not covered between the show being cancelled and revived.

It's no more or less canon that it was then.

I was half-expecting the episode to end with Bart waking up and it having been all a dream brought on from him watching too much Futurama or something of that nature, but it sounds like that won't be the case as far as I'm concerned. I'm willing to accept it as canon if it doesn't suck, but it's going to be awkward continuity-wise and I don't believe it's going to live up to its potential...

As I've said before, it's an episode of The Simpsons, not Futurama, so if it ends up being awful then it'll be really easy to ignore and consider to be non-canon.

I'm keeping in mind that it's modern Simpsons - it's more than likely not going to be spectacular. So, I'm just hoping it's at the very least a good, funny tribute to Futurama.

I've just landed a job where I'll be working with Harry Shearer for a few days, but it won't be until next Monday, so I'm going to miss the opportunity to ask him about "Simpsorama" and get early news titbits to you all.

I second the skeptical eyebrow. Matt didn't love The Simpsons enough not to let that become total shit. He didn't love Futurama enough not to let some serious errors of judgement occur in the last two seasons.

I'll still be watching the crossover. I'll just be wearing the most skeptical pair of eyebrows that I have.

Yeah, this is the same guy who 20 years earlier completely washed his hands of a crossover, then suddenly agree to two of them in the same season

Yeah, it sounds weird, because Bender tends to use variants of the catchphrase far more often than the catchphrase itself.

It can think of like... three instances where he uses it in its original form.

Also, I didn't really like that clip, unfortunately.

Some new pics of the episode taken from a TV commercial.

I'm guessing Frink somehow makes Bender's compartment of mystery a time vortex for the rest of the PE crew to come to the past in. Hmm, interesting.

Preview clip was okay, the new pics are all looking good, but the Professor looks really off-model in the one with Bender's ass projecting the episode information.

So does Fry; his proportions are all off.

It's a little hard to be excited for this when it looks like they're cutting corners quality-wise.

Frankly, I thought the clip looks great.

I mean, nothing about it was outstanding, but it looked like it could easily be taken from an episode of Futurama rather than an episode of The Simpsons (with regards to its writing rather than the animation) and if they manage to maintain that quality throughout the whole episode, it'll probably be the best episode of the show since about season 10.

Basically, I'm just going to be really, really happy if this crossover isn't downright terrible like every other episode of The Simpsons is, these days.

As for the pictures, is the episode called "The Simpso-rama", now?

Also, given how this is going to be airing during the back-end of season 7 on SkyOne in the UK, what are the odds that they'll include "Simpsorama" on the region 2 blu-rays as a special feature? Obviously, the odds are miniscule, but it'd be cool if they did.

Seriously, though, it doesn't actually seem too bad with the bits we've seen so far (apart from unavoidable catch phrases and such).

Better quality versions:

Homer is definitely looking way fatter than usual in that first one. Bender's proportions are all messed up, too. His arms and legs look too thin.

I think that's just how fat Homer looks in the new episodes.

Not too bothered by the animation yet. Futurama had it's fair share of off model drawings in the CC era, plus HD Simpsons is usually fairly shit in animation nowadays anyway, so not expecting anything close to what they've managed to get done before (on a cable budget).

I'm expecting nothing but a fun celebration of Futurama and The Simpsons, together at last. Not something gripping along the lines of Meanwhile or TLPJF, but something just wild and enjoyable like Parabox or Prisoner of Benda.

The animation definitely looks a bit wonky in some picutres, though.  I guess as long as the material itself is good it's not that big of an issue. On that note, I liked the clip!

Bender saying bite my shiny metal ass immediately after being hit felt forced, but otherwise, clip looked really nice, can't wait for how they pull this episode off.
It's better forced than not at all. Basically, it's only there because he's known for saying it.

See, I'm expecting this to take the lighthearted approach you're expecting, but expecting something on par with "The Farnsworth Parabox" is setting yourself up for disappointment.

It'd be amazing if it did end up being that good (and it should be that good, frankly), but have you watched The Simpsons lately? It's atrocious.

And yeah, go easy on the animation, guys. Stills often look really wonky and nothing looked particularly bad about that clip where we actually saw things in motion. Sure, some bits were slightly off-model and what have you, but it'd be really easy to pick off-model Futurama characters out of episodes of Futurama if you sat down and started pausing the episode to look at individual stills. The clip looked like modern The Simpsons looks, that is crisp, clean and, whilst lacking the charm and character of the pre-HD days, at least looking functional.

I didn't care a whole lot for the clip, but it was only 30 seconds so I can't really base any expectations on it. I enjoyed "Don't drink my loved ones!" and "It's a robot...with a catchphrase!", but "tetherboy" was pretty dumb.

I meant the episode's tone more than I meant the actual quality. Maybe a better example would've been something like Fry and the Slurm Factory.

At least it didn't last 4 minutes and have him grinding up against a car.
