Zapp is my least favorite character-uh.  Oh sure there are funny elements to him which bring a chuckle now and then; he is so preposterous as to be funny simply because he is oblivious to just how preposterous he is.  As someone mentioned on one of the episode commentaries he is somewhat like Kirk as Wm Shatner.

For both those who do or do not like Zapp: what would you like to see happen to him in some future episode?

I'd love to see him knocked down several notches.  It has been a dream of mine for many years that Kif is in reality the true military hero and the one deserving of all the medals and "kudos" while Zapp was just too full of himself to realize he is an incompetent ackjass.  I'm sure others have similar views, but something more than a "me too" would be great to read.

In A Farewell to Arms (aired Weds 20jun12) it was disconcerting to see him show up out of nowhere and without explanation on the Martian stone spaceship.  Did that bother anyone else?

Zapp Brannigan is the greatest space hero who has ever lived and shall ever live. He single-handedly defeated a horde of rampaging somethings in the something-something system after all.

Zapp has (in his own mind at least) a firm grasp on the intricacies and nuances of command and battle. He's a glorious and decorated commander. He's the standard behind which the forces of Earth and her allies can rally when threatened.

He also happens to be a bumbling, incompetent jackass. Which is funny. It's not stopped him rising to the top of his profession. It hasn't prevented him from achieving victory over numerous other armies. The pacifists of the Gandhi nebula, the Spiderians, the Balls... Zapp has a long list of conquests to his name, and is rightly celebrated for them. In addition, he's seemingly able to pilot any craft that he encounters, able to command any sorry group of misfits that he's given, and able to make use of the resources at hand to achieve his goals. Even if those resources are limited to his manipulative nature and those goals are to get laid.

Zapp's lost everything before, and he's also gained it all back. It's just not possible for him to go down and stay down. You're not going to get what you want, and I'm rather pleased about that.

Zapp is, quite simply, awesome.

Also, this belongs in the HR department, rather than GD, and should probably be merged with this topic.

Zapp Branigan has never been a man a subtelty.
He needs big setups, epic plots, to stand in the center of the masses (to get on as many people's nerves as possible).
Modest plots are not his thing (e.g. the two person theater play in IaGGDL, and ZD will probably pursue the same direction). Give him epic plots, bigger responsibility, and even MUCH bigger screw ups.

Also, I would like an episode giving an explanation why he is hailed such a galactic hero. In a "messing up 9 out of 10 missions, but succeeding on such epic scale on mission 10, that this more than equals out the 9 failures".

Indeed, Zapp is a legend in his own mind.  Strictly from a character POV it was brilliant because it motivates the viewer - you love to hate him; it keeps you watching.  But as die-hard and devoted long-time fans he is the most grating and irritating.  It's nice to see a bully get beaten down once in a while.  That hasn't really happened in any proper sense.

I would too.  Either the people of DOOP are 'doopid', or Kif has been doing a great job of letting his passive-aggressive boss look good while humbly dismissing his role as the true hero.  That would be my guess.

No.  Quite the opposite.  Zapp is so subtle that most don't ever realize it.  Zapp comes from a long line of military strategists and also accomplished actors, which has given him a unique edge.  His bumbling persona is all an act, and behind it is a cool calculating machine.  There is a reason that all enemies underestimate him, to their downfall, and there is also a reason why he has kept Earth safe all this time.  He, in addition to being the DOOP's most famous commander, is also the highest ranking field officer of Earth's military independent of the DOOP.  Did you really think that the top men in Earth's military industrial complex would let the defense of our homeworld rest solely in the hands of a weak alien organization?  For every public blunder, Zapp coordinates a dozen successful black operations unnoticed by the public, preserving Earth's superiority into the 31st century and beyond.
