With the exception of the pop culture jokes (which, actually, don't bother me too much in this case), "Attack of the Killer App" is another episode from the new run that does a really good job utilizing the characters in non-irritating ways. When you get down to it, the crux of the episode is the Fry/Bender competition and Fry embarrassing Leela online; the supporting characters are around when it's relevant (during the first act set piece; around the conference table when they're discussing the eyePhone or tallying the numbers of followers Fry and Bender have accumulated), and Mom's story is just a subplot running concurrently (and eventually dovetailing) with the Fry/Bender/Leela stuff. I know a lot of people hate this episode, but--at least in terms of how much screen time the main trio gets, and how effectively the supporting characters are used--I actually really enjoy it.

I always thought everyone overreacted about the boil. I mean, they needed something really stupid to embarrass Leela about. Sure, the Susan Boyle reference was stupid, but I can't believe how some people think it ruined the episode.

Yes, that why I don't like the joke. The question remains, is that joke alone enough to destroy the episode? I think not.

I wouldn't say seven minutes were devoted to Susan. She only spoke a few brief lines before she was shut up. The collage with Leela being bugged by paparazzi and fans is about Leela, not the boil. And that collage was quite quick before it all started being about Fry being sad for what he had done, then Mom releasing the Twit-Worm, and Fry jumping into the puke. The boil itself has an extremely minor role.

i remember first watching the episode. it had a classic vibe to it, and i was loving it. then that boil popped up, and it seriously sickened me. that was the worst joke futurama has ever done, bar none. having mom focus on fry and bender seemed really cheap and not well thought out, as well, but the boil joke really did destroy that episode for me.
also, i'm not quite sure why nobody else mentions PI as one of the worst, as well. besides the horrendous writing, the gag about having 4 people in a little dummy RUINED that episode for me. futurama has always had a tinge of reality to it, and that crossed the line. after that, i felt like i was watching south park or something.
with that said, i've loved the new episodes. besides a few bad jokes, the show seems to be as good as it used to.

Incidentally, that's another example of the writers forcing the entire PE crew into a storyline or plot-point when it's really not necessary. Zoidberg needed to accompany Fry and Leela in rescuing Amy and Bender? Really, writers? What does that add? And mostly PI bothers me because it gives the Professor a Prejudice of the Week whose cause (he dated a robot who left him for someone else) is not only unfunny, but also seems to contradict what we know Farnsworth's on-again, off-again relationship with Mom. As far as AoTKA goes: Aki is right that the Susan Boil joke is really just glossed over ("You named your boil Susan?"); yeah, in appearance and voice the boil resembles Susan Boyle, but it's not like you need to know who she is to appreciate the joke. It's not a gag that's necessarily going to date the episode; it's just a reference that is a bit cringe-worthy if you do know who the writers are referencing. But the boil does lead to a surprisingly, strangely touching Fry/Leela story in the last act, which is always a good thing in my book.

My jumping off point for that episode was the puking goat. Totally sophomoric humor that I did not expect to come from Futurama (read: Family Guy humor). I already was writing App down as a bad episode long before Susan came on screen.

I still think the writers were intentionally being gross about the puking goat as a parody of the disgusting stuff people will post on YouTube and the like. It would certainly fit in with the theme of the episode, which is that the internet (particularly social networking sites) tend to bring out the worst in people. I do agree that, generally speaking, a joke like that is way too graphic by Futurama standards; I just think the writers were fully aware of how nasty they were being, and that it was all in the service of satire.
This might just be some baseless optimism on my part, though.

Those who dislike AotKA for the boil and the puking (most, me included) should listen to the commentary, where Groening repeatedly rant about how he was always against it, and where most participants agree that it was taken too far.

Comedy Central probably saw the story boards and said, "This shit's amazing! No wait... this puke's amazing! Hahahaha..." I mean, they asked DXC what word V'Giny bleeped out, totally overlooking the joke. I kind of would've liked Groening to pull rank though and say, "Um, guys, this is dumb. This is why I left The Simpsons." *cough* Buy the DVDs. *cough*

So you won't even support the show because of your (incorrect, imo) assessment of the last season? Buying everything was how we got the show back in the first place. Geez New New School PEELers are entitled...

Yes. Now tell me why anyone should give you the commentaries if you won't pay for them. It's part of the stuff you get from buying the DVDs.

it's not worth it just for the commentaries. There were too many bad episodes last season.
Wrong. You just don't like change. Imagine Futurama was never cancelled and the new eps are still part of the Original Run. Would you still feel the same way?

I think Proposition Infinity gets off lightly because it followed In-A-Gadda-Da-Leela and Attack of the Killer App. It was the first indication that all wasn't lost when the show came back for a lot of people (including myself) who were getting worried. The bad writing exists in the plot and characterisations, but I still find it a fairly funny episode - plus everything works within the episode, it just counters a lot of the show's overall arcs, it's not like Attack of the Killer App where the story didn't even work as its own, standalone thing. The dummy gag you mention actually made me laugh out loud. I didn't like it at first, but Zoidberg's "I guess I should have stayed in the ship" had me on the floor. It was just so ridiculous, I loved it. Incidentally, that's another example of the writers forcing the entire PE crew into a storyline or plot-point when it's really not necessary. Zoidberg needed to accompany Fry and Leela in rescuing Amy and Bender? Really, writers? What does that add? From what I remember, Zoidberg only tagged along for the purposes of that joke. I think that's justified. Plus from a character point of view, it does make sense. Zoidberg had a new chance to strengthen the bond with his friends and make them like him back, maybe. It certainly wasn't out of character for him to tag along.

Back when the original DVDs first came out, we didn't have Youtube or torrent sites. We spent $30 on a DVD set that included episodes we hated and we liked it!
I still do this...

You're not the one refusing to buy the DVD set and then asking somebody who is supporting the show to post the commentaries...
And I'm not sure what is wrong with people, but they have a very entitled opinion when it comes to the new episodes, like they expect them to be exactly what they wanted viewed through the rose-tinted glasses of the best episodes of the original run. There were stinkers in the original run too...

I agreed with you when we had a discussion about the new animation, but I have no respect for people making requests asking others who actually bought and supported the show to give them what they’re missing because of their lousy excuses. If the show isn’t good enough for you to support, then you aren’t worthy of listening to the commentaries... They are recorded for actual fans of the show, you know, the people who’s support and loyalty helped actually bring the show back? Yes those people, the people who’s continued support by buying the DVD’s will help contribute to the shows success, and in turn will help go towards future episodes getting made. Who knows, maybe the possibility of one or two episodes out of the next season being worthy as well?... I may think that Season 6 is a slight step down in comparison to the original seasons (I'm now keeping this post on topic, like it?), but it's certainly more than worth our support if we even care at all... So you won't even support the show because of your (incorrect, imo) assessment of the last season? Buying everything was how we got the show back in the first place. Geez New New School PEELers are entitled...

I just went to Amazon to check the price of Volume 5. It's currently listed at $15... new for $15. That's over 50% off of the original price. In fact, that's over 50% off of the price I paid for any of the other seasons. And I agree with Otis, I admit that Season 6 isn't as good as other seasons on average, but it's not like it has 2 best ever episodes and then 11 golden stinkers.
