Additional: afair the Borg had 'nanites', at least in the Voyager universe. Those were more-or-less equivalent to nanobots, I think.

You could imagine a nanobot-v-nanite battle, though. It would make a good sci-fi story.

I think that it's pretty obvious who would win.  Wesley's nanobots nearly destroyed the Enterprise without even realizing it.  They came a lot closer than the Borg ever did when they were actually trying to destroy the Enterprise.

You know what Wesley's nanobots would call a Borg cube?  A boxed lunch.

The Voyager stuff was made up later.  I don't consider Voyager to be canon anyway.

My "Reincarnation" reminders are still going strong, it seems: every time I see anything about Chesterfield (the name of a nearby locality), I hear Hermes' voice saying "it's lit up like a smooth, refreshing Chesterfield."

Apologies for the double post (at least it refers to a different episode this time), but I remembered that I used to be nearby another place called Big Bethel, any mention of which would always make me hear the Professor's voice saying "That is not what I meant to give you for Big Bertha Bethel."

Pretty bleak Futurama reminder, but I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention that the newest COVID variant has officially been named “Omicron.” Our global failure to contain this pandemic confuses and infuriates me. :hmpf:

One of the local radio stations in my neck of the woods is 99.5 “The Bus,” and of course I have a hard time hearing their station ID without saying to myself, in muffled Bender fashion, “I’m gettin’ on the bus!”

I guess you've gotta' work your way up to Fry-level caffeine consumption in stages. Don't try this at home, kids!

Every time I see a bag of these for sale in a store, I'm reminded of a certain 25-star general.

I've never actually tried them.  A man can dream, though.

I saw some at the dollar store, so I decided to buy a bag.  I tried the Hotter 'N Hot Jalapeño flavor.  They reminded me a little bit  of Crunch Tators, but they didn't remind me of Futurama, so I suppose this is off-topic for this thread.

Okay, I have something that's actually on-topic.  In the third episode of ONIMAI the characters watch a movie called Space Titanic.  It's not an intentional Futurama reference, but it's still pretty funny.

You can watch the Space Titanic trailer here.

I watched "A Clockwork Origin" on TV when it first aired; this stands out in my memory because I was at my parents' house at the time and an old school friend of my mom's was staying with us for several days.

At some point in the more recent past, there was a day when that same friend was visiting my mom again, they visited me, the three of us went to the store, and I got a tube of hand lotion.

And now, the point: I still have that same tube (it was a big one), and every single time I use it, for a brief moment I think of "A Clockwork Origin," because that's apparently how my mind works.

Why I think specifically of the part of the episode with the robot dinosaurs, though, I cannot say.

Whenever I go to the gym (early afternoon-ish), Friends is always on and it's my daily go-to watch on the treadmill TV's. Without fail, I am always reminded of "This is ancient Earth's most foolish program. Why does Ross, the largest Friend, not simply eat the other five?" They never saved that for sweeps week.

Re: Tedward's anecdote, I'm trying to formulate a joke about how the bottomless lotion might serve as the primordial ooze from which a new race of being evolves, thus bringing it all full-circle to "A Clockwork Origin"...but I can't quite get it right, so everyone just imagine that I said something clever along those lines.

Topic: I had occasion to travel to and from western New York this weekend, and on the drive back through north-central Pennsylvania I saw a sign for Keeler Road. You can easily deduce who that sign reminded me of. Dr. Ben Beeler, of course.

Probably because that's the best part of the episode.

Speaking of robots, the one in this commercial looks familiar.

Found some of this beer today in Halifax from a place I'd never heard of, the Good Robot Brewing Company. The label is a real where's-waldo collage, with some clear references to Futurama-style robots (note the cook-bot and waiter-bot). There's a version of Kif in the top right left, too (link). Everything seems to meet the distant-enough-from-the-real-thing-not-to-trigger-any-trademark-violations standard, though.

That's a great find. I believe I found "Kif" hanging out with Oscar the Grouch, Comic Book Guy, and one of the ghostbusters. He also resembles the alien who stole Fry's nose in "Spanish Fry." :) EDIT: I want to say the blue-haired guy is a copyright-friendly Roger Klotz, but I can't shake the feeling I've seen another similar character somewhere.

Your post reminded me of a bar in Charlotte, NC, called the Wooden Robot Brewery. The name, and its mascot/logo, immediately bring wooden Bender to mind:

Do you get the sense that the brewery was inspired by Futurama, or just a coincidence?

I saw this earlier and was amazed. Though I am an eccentric tinkerer, I'm way too lazy a tinkerer to have the patience to make something like this. Pretty creative. :)

Definitely column B. There's a mid-2010s geek-chic thing going on at the place; I think the artist's instructions included the words 'more references!' somewhere.

Edit: I should add, I think the place's name is a play on the name of JJ Abrams' production company, 'Bad Robot'

The question was, "Who is Philip J. Fry?"

The contestant just said, "Who is Fry?" but Ken accepted that as a correct response.

I don't remember the amount, but yes, of course I knew it.

The clue was, "On Futurama, this pizza delivery boy wakes up in the year 3000 after being cryogenically frozen," or something to that effect.  I don't remember the exact wording.

Basically anyone who had ever seen the show would have gotten it.

Maybe a future question will be:

During the Futurama episode, "Insane in the Mainframe", at what exact timestamp does former used car dealer Malfunctioning Eddie exclaim "I barely exploded at all!"

Obviously, everyone on PEEL already knows the answer to that.

That's just silly, though it is technically funny.

A question [actually answer, because it's Jeopardy, something I got wrong above to my shame..] along the lines of "The episode of Futurama called 'Insane in the Mainframe' has this production number" could well be a high-difficulty one for most PEEL members. Personally I have a margin of error of at least +- 1 season for an embarrassingly high number of episodes.

In case anyone here is a fan of sci-fi comedy and quiz shows, this 'Red Dwarf Universe Challenge' is a classic, pitting fans against the cast. It's massively impressive and massively frightening how much the fans know

Having watched the original-run DVDs so many times, I can usually deduce an episode’s production number from the first four seasons based on which disc of which box set the episode appears on. I would’ve guessed 3ACV12 for “Insane in the Mainframe,” but alas I miscounted and now consulting Wikipedia I see that it’s actually 3ACV11. Not too shabby, though, if I do say so myself. ;)

Keeping with this basic line of thinking, it seems a more likely Jeopardy answer might be “Don’t mention the number ‘56’ to this Futurama robot—if you do, it’ll be all he can think about.” You might get someone to incorrectly guess “Who is Bender?” to that one, but the correct answer is obscure enough without being totally impossible.

Topic: While channel-surfing just now, I came across a listing for a program entitled Kiff; further research indicates this is apparently some kids’ cartoon on the Disney Channel, rather than a spin-off featuring our favorite DOOP lieutenant (albeit, with an extra ‘F’ in his name).

This is getting Science-y thread-y, but: cork has been used as a material for heat shields for spacecraft for some time. It was used on the early orbital vehicles, and it's still being used, including for missions to Mars.
