I've been visiting some online stores and, since I don't have a region 2 DVD player, I am thinking about buying the Season 1 VCD set sometime. But I'm more unfamiliar with this media. Do you need a special player, or can they be played on any DVD player? I don't know if VCDs are region-specific or not, but I hope they're more compatible. I hope you can at least use your computer to watch them.

Also, I noticed that all 13 episodes come in 3 discs, like the DVD. What would the quality look like in a VCD? I would think something like high-quality Divx, but I'm not sure.

I think there was a VCD set for malaysia once or something, nto sure if it was authorized though. It was said to be produced by FOXhome Australia if I'm not mistaken. Regarding VCD: I doubt the 3discs thing, 13 episodes need 5 usually unless they are badly cut. The standard used is MPEG1 at roughly 1.5mbit/s I think. If they were taken from a good source (if authorized, they should be) that's usually above VHS and below DVD. Hard to compare to DivX, as that's not a fixed bitrate standard, but a codec. It's watchable on TV, but not really great. DVD players can often play VCDs.

I have purchased the VCD's and although not the greatest quality I felt they were passable. They do look legitimate to me as to the copyright notices and so forth but not 100% sure. A big plus to these is that they can be played on the Windows Media Player as well as a DVD player (they play on mine at least). The full episodes are here all the way down to the ending credits which I really liked for some reason. Another advantage is that they are much cheaper than the DVD's and can be played on a variety of players.
Even though they come in 3 CD cases there are 6 total discs - 2 in each case. So, for a cheap alternative this is a realy great way to go. The quality is better than other types of formats that these can be had in (save for DVD), will hold up better than VHS and will save you some disc space if you do not have a CD burner (which I don't).

I have a Sony DVD player which I'm pleased to say does play VCDs. I have Futurama Season One on DVD and am waiting for Season Two on DVD. Seeing as it takes so long to come out though I can just about wait for the Season Two DVDs but would like to buy Season Three on VCD because it could be well over a year away on DVD. Even if I do buy it on VCD I do plan to buy it on DVD when the time comes meaning that everyone involved will get some money in the end.

Does anyone know hwere I can buy Season Three on VCD and what the quality is like, is there more than one set and does the quality differ?

According to Slurmman's site, the VCDs do look like they were licensed by Fox, and the pictures on the covers alone look genuine enough to fit with the eps on the VCDs.

Is there a Season 2 VCD out on sale now? Otis implied it, but now I'm not sure.
