Yeah, what CG said.  I don't think any of us (the 4-5 of us who have been discussing this) disagree that much on the possible future directions for the show.

I have a text file for the subtitles of the video if someone wants to start from that. I'm too busy to do a transcript. Unless your all OK with waiting until the weekend.

If you would like to start, grab this text file:

I think they should do one more movie about what happens when they go through the worm hole and how they get back to Earth, and then bring back a Series.

I agree!!! I really wanna see what happens when they come out the other side of that wormhole. Will Zapp follow them? Where will they end up De-spacing?

And most of all, I wanna see what happens with  Fry and Leela

Grafted this conversation, starting from soyley's link to semi-spoiler-containing article and continuing with spoiler-laden conversation, into the spoiler thread.

Good link, incidentally.

Personally I don't see any problem whatsoever for continuing the show. The movie was a nice gift to fans with so many characters reappearing and there's a nice little ending as the crew sets off into the unknown. But it's not like anyone dies or goes through some big change. If the show picks up, the adventure goes on. And what's the big deal about a wormhole, can just have them go there and back again.

If the series is picked up, it gets to premiere basically with the conclusion of a cliffhanger; to me, they still have the option of either wrapping it up quickly, even in the first new episode if they really wanted, or of kicking around the lost-in-space thing for a bit, maybe using it as an opportunity to mix things up a bit if they're so inclined. Either way, fans who've bought the DVDs might be more likely to tune in to watch the new season premiere as a result.

Got and watched the DVD yesterday. Good movie, waaaay better than Bender's Game. I loved that planet of creatures. The humour was good, plenty going on. Mars Vegas was great. Not so keen on the ending, by that I mean that stingray manta thing the planet turned into. Apart from that it's good. Not TV show great, but good none the less...

Okay, I've just got off my 'cellphone telephone' and ready to do my review for ITWGY. First thing I must say is I really loved it and thought it was much better than the last 3 DVD releases. The cutting up process that will eventually happen is only noticable after the crew leave Mars Vegas but the rest feels pretty much on the money. The first thing I have to notice is the triumphant return to form for how the characters act and behave around each other (it's a vastly better than Beast With A Billion Backs), they seem much more like the characters of old (particularly Leela and Fry).

Anyway let's start at the beginning with Mars Vegas and Seth MacFarlane's Rat Pack inspired intro song. I thought it was brilliant and I will forever wish I hadn't moaned so much when it was annouced he would appear in the DVD. Superb and a great way to start the film (yes it really does feel like a film for once). The plot was both deep and meaningful and yet also easy to follow on the surface (just like Futurama should be) and it also gives us some the best new one liners out of production season 5. I'm already using 'cellphone telephone'. The plot flows much better than in BWABBs and BG although after re-watching Bender's Big Score the flow that is better than I remember. The ending still feels a bit tacked on though, much like the last 2 installments but not as bad as those two. I did like that we finally have some resolution to the Fry and Leela relationship. Perhaps if Futurama comes back we can have some plotlines as them as a couple (it's bound to be a rocky relationship to start with afterall).

The animation in this production seems a real return to form and the music throughout was much better than before. Considering the budget constraints the music had they did a really good job.

I'd like to think of bad things about the DVD but the only things I can think of is that it's still not quite up to the standard of the best of the old Futurama episodes but its easily better than anything after Devil's Hands. Let's hope Fox finally sees sence and brings it back as a TV show. I mean afterall the DVDs have been a success sales wise and ITWGY has had good support in my local supermarkets (hell Sainsbury's put it number 1 in their TV DVD chart). However ITWGY has perhaps proved that Futurama can, just about, work in an extended episode format. Fourth time lucky!

The extras were perhaps the biggest disappointment although the mock documentary starring Lauren Tom was quite funning and I enjoyed the bit with Matt and David experiencing zero G.

So my review score then.... I'm gonna give it 84%. Yes that high! Also I'm going to edit the scores I gave to the other 3 movies. Mainly to bring them in line with what I think about older episodes and in comparison to ITWGY.

Bender's Big Score: 62%
Beast With A Billion Backs: 49% (yes I have really gone off this alot and would say it's a two or three time watcher at best, except for the League of Robots bits)
Bender's Game: 60% (would be higher if not for the lousy last half hour)
Into The Wild Green Yonder: 84%

I was so happily suprised by this movie! I thought it would pretty much suck as much as the last two...but NO!!!! This one actually worked well as a movie.

One thing that's really annoying me: anyone else having trouble with the extras menu? I have no idea what's wrong with mine, but I can only play the commentary.

Are you playing it in media player on your PC? I had the same problem but when I switched it to a "proper" DVD player with my TV it worked fine using the DVD remote.

I'm just posting my original thoughts I've already typed out elsewhere in spoiler tags to avoid creating even more scrolling, 'cause I did get a little carried away with them. They're also rather jumbled...

tl;dr: I LOVED it, and it's my favourite movie of the four, although Score comes up fairly closely behind for me. It felt like it was longer than it really was, in a good way - there was a lot to it. I thought it was hilarious and the funniest movie of the four, and it also contained the best characterizations, as well as general use of characters - Fry in particular, which is great, because he's my absoluteabsolute favourite and I absolutely adored him throughout.

If this really is the end of Futurama, then I'm totally satisfied with it, in both the screentime most characters got, how the cameos weren't overbearing, and in the actual ending of it, which was so well-done and perfect. BUT, I'd really like to see it come back, because seriously - I am not ready to say goodbye to these characters. Not at all.

In regards to some things discussed a little earlier on in this thread, that I missed out on by being a dork and waiting for the DVD to come out:

I agree that the concept of completely ignoring natural selection and preserving every single species ever was a little odd, but I can still see some of the merits behind it, particularly in the cases of species that have gone extinct due to humans. And yeah, the question about whether everything is worth saving or not with the leech was a good one, but I'm glad that they cut it off with Zoidberg eating it, because while messages are all well and good and Futurama is a smart enough show to handle them, it is a comedy first and foremost and it's important to not get too wrapped up in these big, overlying themes and rather focus on the characters themselves - including their quirks, which is where a lot of the best comedy comes from.

Also, in regards to the series continuing... I would love it if they spent at least one full episode on the crew roaming through space, and finding their way home not at the end of the first episode, but at the beginning of the second. Either that or - at most - them wandering through space for three solid episodes, but only finding their way back to New New York at the very beginning of the fourth episode. Then again, I can also see the first episode kicking off with the wormhole having taken the ship back to New New York just like that, by chance, immediately, but I really do hope they don't go that route because there's a lot of great stuff they could probably use with the crew trying to find their way back.

You know, assuming it gets renewed.

Which I really hope it does.

This movie? Was amazing.

Also: I adored all of Fry's different tinfoil hats. Seriously, they were great.

My advice is to shop around, you'll probably find a good deal too. Don't let the Scamadonians get you!

I don't immediately love it like I did BBS, but it was good. I dunno, it seemed kinda unusual. It had it's ups and downs, and I kinda felt like they wrapped it up too quickly, but it was good. I liked the main story, though the femi-whatever parts were sorta hit and miss. I'll watch it again tommorow.

Also, now I'm sad that it's over again. It'll probably be a while 'til the next Futurama.

The first time I watched ITWGY I wondered if the galactic coordinates that Leela listed for the Violet Dwarf had any significance, but figured that they probably didn't.  But then I listened to the video commentary and David X. Cohen proved once again that absolutely everything in this show is a nerdy reference.

So what is at galactic latitude -58.03, longitude 167.84?  Turns out its the star Mira (within a few arcseconds).  That's kind of a neat choice for them to make.  The primary star is losing its atmosphere to space, and the secondary, sun-like star is gathering it into a disc that might one day form planets.

You have to love a show where the producer adresses all of the "astrophysics grad students in the audience."

Alright. I finally watched it!

It was all so crazy and going so fast! Although I guess BBS was like that the first time too!
It was indeed very epic and sci-fi. Almost too much for me to wrap my mind around!
I was happy and disappointing with the ending. I WANT MORE!!!!
FRY & LEELA:

WELL FUTURAMA FANS:
I know this sounds crazy, but I know I can do it!
I say we need to bring it back! How about another Season or two on TV?!?
I'm an actress... I work in the entertainment industry, and I've seen how these things happen...
What we need to do
+Encourage/inspire Matt Groening and David X Cohen to actually continue and create more stories.
+Show the network how badly we want it, and how much money it would make for them!
  How we will do this
+BUY THE DVD'S! Please don't pirate! Buy as many as possible! Buy them for your friends so we can recruit new fans!
+Beg and plead! Post your cries all over the internet, and send Letters and perhaps even crazier...A PROTEST! Outside of Fox studios maybe? (i know where to go.. i've worked there a couple of times)
+The next time I get a job filming at Fox studios, I'll leave gift baskets with desperate pleas on their desk.
+I'm not a stalker by any means. But I know enough people to find MG's & DXC's addresses and I would like to send them some friendly greeting cards....with a little note inside telling them how much it means to us, that we (the fans) will support them in getting it back on the air. I don't want to bother them too much..

 I NEED YOUR HELP!
We need everyone's help! I can collect signatures for yet another petition. But I'll make sure it actually gets to them!

Planning to buy cat litter at Target tonight! Oh, and the DVD while I'm at it.

Having already known the ending through spoil-o-vision I'd love to see the series return (obviously) with the first episode acting as a "Lost in Space" spoof. Throw in a MST3K Satellite of Love reference for bonus points.
Maybe we rejoin the crew after a year of drifting through the far reaches of space. Kif and Amy could have had a traditional human wedding conducted by the ship's captain, Fry and Leela could be dating in the confines of a space ship and Zoidberg increasingly gets on Hermes nerves bringing back their harsh one sided rivalry.

Better yet, have a double wedding of Fry/Leela and Kif/Amy hosted by Farnsworth.  He owns the ship so he can act as captain and perform the ceremony.  For the reception, Hermes can cook up a large pot of Jerked Lobster.

Newsradio is a great example of an on again off again relationship that was central to the show but never caused it to jump the shark.
Personally, after 4 seasons and 4 movies (and 10 years) I'm tired of Fry trying to win over Leela and would happily watch them in a dating relationship. I always loved Homer and Marge's high school era episodes on the Simpsons, and a dynamic similar to that would work really well in Futurama.
