There've been lots of rumors flying around lately about a future for futurama.  At first there was a whisper that new episodes might come out, then talk of a single movie.  More recently we've heard that four movies are on the way.  Everyone was psyched about that until Billy West posted that, no wait, there's a whole new season on its way!  Of course, just a few hours later we were told that, oops, maybe not.

So what do you guys think?  Movie?  New Season?  Nothing?

Well, I'm going for the 4 movies option, but that's more hope than anything...

what? I like kittens! AND if that wasn't enough to guarantee the kittens vote then consider that it's more realistic than the other options also.

Statistically speaking, there's more precedent for the kittens raining from the sky. So I'm going for that.

Neither. We've got no faith in fox, and no patience for the rabid cultists who seem to think that one day, we'll actually be ruled by the show, in the same way that Star Trek once ruled earth in the episode "Where no fan has gone before".

I hate to admit it, but I think that FOX will screw something up either on purpose or on accident. Either way, I hope I am dead wrong on this topic, but I have a bad feeling that is what will happen.

thats kinda my fear as well.  It's already been a couple of years since the show got canned, how much longer before too many of the writers and voice actors are too busy to be brought back together?

can't they get new people, not the actors of course but writers? there are even some good fan fictions worth trying on gotfuturama.com. and they could new writers, i don't see what

No. Futurama was great because of its brilliant writers, if new ones where brought in it would not be the same, the style would change and it would de- evolve into a horrible, bland, unfunny mess. Like a certain cartoon family.

You made this poll far too soon, you should of waited until Billy announces that the plan for another 72 episodes, 10 movies, a series of new-gen video games and futurama trading card game is a done deal. Should be anyday now...

With the denial of the 26 episdoes and the lack of one regarding the 4 movies i'd say thats our best bet, but i wouldn't hold your breath.

Hopefully the success of the four movies brings a revivial of the regular show. I'm interested in how the show will work in movie format, too.

wouldn't it be safer to do 26 episodes if you wanted to revive the show, 'cause movies sort of, well you know, they sort of end up things by being more dramatic, in any episode it happens certain things and just like fry says: in the end everything is back to normal, well alteast the beginning of the next episode, but movies sort of mess things up by being atleast 3 times as long.

ah yes, but there is, and i quote:
"Another well-informed source tells us that there was no basis in reality for the 26 episode rumour. The plan to make direct-to-DVD movies is still existing."

What shall we believe? Only time will tell. I'm hopoeful for a season or two, with a movie as the final episode....

I'm just amazed at the number of terrible American sit-coms there are that still run. Also Family Guy isn't that great but it still runs.

How the hell doesn't Futurama get put back on the air? It was going good and never had any really bad episodes. Why was it cancelled in the first place? It's mind boggling.

Also, it's amazing that the show has been cancelled for nearlly 3 years...or so? and there are still fans posting in these boards. What more proof do you need Fox?

i have a sneaking suspicion that futurama would still be on the air if it had been as bad as some of fox's more popular sitcoms.

As for me, I'm a cynical bastard. I'd love some more seasons but it won't happen for a while.

My guess is we will get a slower version of what happened to family guy. The movies will suck, and force out a new couple of seasons.

uhmmmm....... no, Futurama is sort of in a similar (but slowed down) ordeal that Family Guy had, though there are certain differences that say that it could easily be a different story in the end. David and Matt have mentioned many times in the commentaries that they end up making far too much material for a single episode, and most of the time it sounds like it's some damned good stuff they have to sacrifice! Just story-wise, Futurama may actually get even better status from making movies instead of episodes... it can stick to longer-lasting entertainment, unlike Family Guy.. so it just seems to be logic to me that it could dish out some kick-arse movies.
But, of course that's just my opinion... and I would really rather there be new seasons rather than new movies. But at the moment, the movies seem to be the most probable case.

I'm sure the same applies to Family Guy, they may have too much material. That doesn't mean its good.

Right. So am I wrong, or is that my opinion?

I've been pessimistic on other threads here, and I'm still very skeptical.  However -- why do people so far assume that Fox would produce future Futurama movies/episodes?  Why shouldn't Cartoon Network buy the rights to the series, if Fox thinks Futurama is kaput?

Or Futurama could form its own production company.  Granted, Fox could probably nix the deal, but why?  Oh yeah, they're Fox.

Do you see why I'm skeptical?  But still:

Fry: You can't give up hope just because it's hopeless. You gotta hope even more and cover your ears and go "blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah!" [He is still covering his ears.] (shouting) I'd also like a pack mule.

And a pony.  Pretty please?

fox will produce further episodes/movies if, and ONLY if, they think there's enough money in it for them.  That's a big if considering that futurama isnt as popular (or as cheap to make) as some of the crappier sitcoms that fox airs.  As far as other companies picking up the series, there's just not enough fanbase for anyone to take that kind of risk or invest that kind of money.  I wish there was, but we have to be realistic.

    • Please remain cautiously optomistic.
    • In business terms, it's called Return On Investment, or R.O.I.

If there isn't enough R.O.I. involved, nobody will do it.
