According to the Wikipedia entry for Futurama, the planet Arrakis (from the science fiction book Dune) is referenced in one episode ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Futurama  under the section "DOOP and intergalactic relations" ). Having read Dune I was curious to find out where, but after searching extensively on the net I still don't know. Does anyone else know?

I'm not sure myself - unless they make links in a Pharoah to Remember - though that's more just a piss take of ancient Egypt.

According to CGEF, in Teenage Mutant Leela Hurdles, the worm they come across in the sewer race mimics the great worms in sound and appearance - the big difference being that instead of a three-part mouth - there are just three mouths. Futher more, I always thought of the sewer worm looking more like a tape worm - but oh well. I'm a fan of Dune (mostly just the movie, if that's forgivable) so I'm interested to see what else there might be  :)

Arrakis might be quoted in the same episode, when Leela wants to read a space story to the baby crew... and the worm did not look like a common sandworm at all. Usually Futurama makes quite good likenesses of quoted things, like the space snail (from Empire Strikes Back) in The Route of all Evil. Frankly, I haven't paid attention to it either, and I just reviewed most episodes again after a long pause.

I don't believe Arrakis is directly referenced in Futurama.
Though there are a few allusions to it:
  • Osiris IV
  • Trisol (Hot & dry, like Arrakis)
  • The Sewer-worm
  • Slurm
Perhaps I should explain the last one:
Spice - made from sandworm secretion
Slurm - Is worm secretion.

Heh, okay. I never thought of the connection between the Melange spice and Slurm. Nice!

Actually, I remember one phrase that I always thought was a reference to Dune: in Crimes of the Hot, Al Gore says "I have ridden the mighty moon worm!" If that's a reference to Earth's moon then Fry and Leela were certainly lucky not to have come across one in The Series Has Landed. :-)
