There is nothing shocking about it. The Futurama DVDs did well in the eyes of FOX HE.

Ever heard of direct-to-video? That's exactly what they are about to make and considering that they would have to gather a new crew to produce them, doing just one movie would have been a bit strange.

What awesome news!

I lost track of Futurama after season 1, and just rediscovered it a month or so ago. I've devoured the DVDs and am now officially an obsessive fan. And the news of the movies comes at just the right time. "I'm walkin' on sunshine!"

I agree pulling together a team for just one movie might be strange, but I would have expected 1 movie + episodes, rather than 4 movies. 4 movies just seems odd to me. Not in a bad way, just odd.

Well, if they make 4 movies that can be split up (ala the Family Guy movie), that's about 12-16 "episodes" that Fox can show if it wants to.

Although I think I'd prefer that the movies aren't compartmentalized this way - I think the writers will have more creative freedom if they don't have to stick to a pseudo-episode format (I wasn't overly impressed by the Family Guy movie).

yeah, I agree. If they were going to do that, I'd rather they just make episodes for direct-to-DVD release, 3-4 to a disk (anime series do it all the time, though it's (ttbomk) unheard of for US networks/studios). Movies are also cool, though, as futurama is one of those few animated shows that has enough substance to stretch to movie-length without wearing very thin (I love family guy, but I really don't think this is the case there. Same with Simpsons.)

I was trying to think of something slightly original or insightful to say, but I couldn't get past the delighted giddy stage. Getting signed for four movies is a little odd, and it does raise some questions. Will they all released be released at once? Three months apart? Region 1 first? Is there a possibility that later movies may be cancelled if the first ones don't do well?  Meh, I'll be cynical tomorrow. It's too much work for tonight.

Big mistake. Huge.
Dammit, I'm excited and I have no outlet! Argh! It's like being a horny teenage virgin all over again! My friends are useless, the most positive reaction I got from any of them was "That's cool, I guess."
Sigh...

That's probably because most of us over in #fc land are pretty jaded when it comes to the topic.  We get inundated by people who think they are the sole bearers of the good news, or lack the ability to spell (sometimes both).  We've actially all pretty heavily discussed this, as it's been a matter of speculation for a number of months now, and there hasn't been much new to discuss.  Not to be a killjoy or anything, certainly no problems with you coming back, just be aware we don't always talk Futurama in there.

That said, this is certainly promising news.  I haven't been following the news heavily lately (it's hard here with multiple threads on the matter, and I'm out of the habit of checking CGEF regularly).  Though the new FOX broadcasting president said there's been no discussions as of now (I concede he could be just keeping things hush-hush), he does at least acknowledge the existance of the show, unlike past FOX administrations.  Read about it here (about 2/3 of the way down)

If correct, then huzzahs are truly in order.

But until we get some more confirmation from other sources.. say DXC, Matt G, or even FOX themselves I'll remain skeptical.. cautiously upbeat skeptical.  ;)

Four movies seems too much. I'd say make and release the first, see how it does. If it does well, make and release the second movie and start production of the show again. Four just seems like overkill.

I don't want to put an damper on anybody's enthusiasm (although that would be nice, as there's waaay too much optimism in here), but I have three points that I'd like to make:

1. FOX were all about gaining more control over the show. If they're in charge of the "product" in a more direct way now, how badly will it have been suckified?

2. Considering the fact that FOX gave themselves a massive fanfare, a drumroll and a spin of the proverbial top hat every time they told us all that no, Futurama was not yanked after 4 seasons, it got five, perhaps the "4 movies" isn't as concrete as we are all supposing. Hell, anybody remember the whole "we're going to do 3 Firefly movies" thing?

3. 4 movies is a high-cost excercise compared to a whole season. If they're producing 30 minutes for ever $600,000 they spend, then a season costs between $78,000,000 and $132,000,000 per season on production. Now, a movie lasts 2-3 hours. So per movie they're spending $24,000,000 and $36,000,000. That's $144,000,000 for 4 movies. A lot more than they would have spent on four more seasons. Plus they're not even getting any airtime for their money, 'cause it's going straight to DVD. My guess is they'll only spend the first  24 to 36 mil before they commit to the other 100-odd million dollars.

Remember kids, FOX is all about profits, not about making us happy. Whilst I'd be delighted to have this rumour come true, all I know is... my gut says - maybe.

A futurama movie probably wouldn't last 2-3 hours. It would probably only be given an hour and a half. Which would make 4 movies equal about 12 episodes which is less then 1 season.
